Sure, NWN2 isn't dead. But at some point it will be...

Will it? Can a game actually be dead? There's a distinction between the game and the community here. The game could be out of date, rubbish, superceded, etc, and yet still have a strong following. The community could be next to non-existant, but the game might be played frequently by a minority who don't communicate with each other. A community is not just players, but players who know there are other players and coverse with them, etc. The community could be dead as doornails whilst the game is still being enjoyed heartily by many, for example.

Yours,
The Dead.

What M. Reider is saying is to release all the modules you can make before then!

Well, if folks are interested in helping to inspire more interest in the community, one way would be to volunteer as a member of the Academy for Modding Excellence's NWN2 awards group. We're still desperately in need of NWN2 members, and still have a backlog of two years worth of NWN2 awards that we can't award because we don't have enough members to nominate, play and vote on them. There's very little commitment -- as I've written here before, it's strictly "Do what you can, when you have time for it" -- and another three members or so would probably allow us to start clearing that backlog of un-awarded awards.

For more information, see my "recruiting call" post on the AME Forums, and feel free to contact me (via PM on the BSN, or at andarian at ame dash gda dot net).

Right, preferably a few weeks before so there is some time to play them too...

As to death of a game, I still play, regularly, my old Gold Box Games for the Pool of Radiance series as well as the Champions of Krynn Series. Oh, man, the imagery is definitely dated in their sprite based (lack) of detail, but the games themselves are superlative masterpieces of work that still, IMO, stand the test of time.

And I also still play Panzer General, which came out in 1994. Regularly. Then again, I am a cheap bastard, so there's that. I know it's near sacrilige to say, and you didn't hear it from me, but there is more to gaming than just NWN/2. That said, I offer my tithes and worship also regularly to the God of the Toolset of NWN2.

Death is only the beginning.

Oh man! Champions of Krynn! I forgot all about that one. I bet I still have it somewhere...maybe at my parent's house.... I remember playing through it twice with the same group and getting to about 40 something level and since the game would scale to some degree with how many enemies would spawn, I would kill dozens and dozens of dragons when I would get the dragonlance, sometimes 2 in one turn! It was great fun.

And the gameworld was huge! One good thing about the gold box is that it is so simple that you could make huge gameworlds without taking years and years.

Don't remember if I ever beat it though... I remember getting to the abyss, but I don't know if I ever made it out... Kept getting caught by Takhisis

I pwned Takhisis -- after getting my butt handed to me several dozen times. That Dragon Lance was freakin' AWESOME!

If you were "kalam", I'd suggest kalamar (calamar = squid in Spanish), though it wouldn't be a zombie name exactly.

Edit: Well, perhaps it would.

can anyone give me a link showing proper way to download and play a mod? I guess I am doing it wrong...Dowloaded Wizards apprentice, extracted files, even moved them to my NWN2 folder. Now how do I access it?

TWA is a campaign are you looking in start campaign or start module?

Probable best to take this to a new thread if that is not the solution.

Or ask in the module page. Usually the install instructions are there or in the readme. If it's all well installed, you can start it by clicking in New Game, then either New Campaign or New Module (it depends). But yes, leave that kind of questions for another thread.

I can see this thread working as a we're-not-dead-yet/frivolous-chat/newbie-question chat room, kinda like the gaggle of smokers outside the office building. The newbies ask here just because this thread has more recent activity, and they're too daunted by the upteen-other forums to search through the archives or start a new thread.

Hmnm, 'Bring out Yer Dead' does sound the name of a module. ;)

What would a world be like where everybody that died was doomed to rise as an undead? I'd imagine the folk would either be very paranoid of death or they'd have adapted to live with it? Perhaps some of both? Maybe they would have farms where all the hands are dead relative of the owners, or the skeletons are used to power grinding wheels? Necrotech! It'd be a pretty creepy place, I'll bet.

It is sad, because those of us that play NWN-2 do so because we dislike DnD 4 rules and use DnD 3.5 rules and 3.0 FR support matterial for our own PnP games at home. I like playing NWN-2 with my friends across the country and for the people at Atarti, Bioware, Gamespy et al to forsake us is well lame.

Riona Dunne.. Now the dead have been foresaken !

I have to agree with you about that but in more ways than one.. One of the best things for me about using the toolset is that having been buried in it for a while when you pop up for air you discover all sorts of games that have been released in your absence and can get all the "game of the year" versions really cheap without the need for patches etc. However one thing I have noticed is that a lot of the single player games need internet activation/ logging in etc now, the point is that this reduces their lifespan to when the companies decide it's time to close the servers etc. Not that I'm saying this will happen in all cases but I think the days of CD keys, resale and use wherever/whenever you want are rapidly dwindling and more "control" is being excercised by the developers about what you should be playing.

So that means that games like NWN/2 probably wont exist in the future and I can't see many moddable ones arriving as it kills the DLC market, unless it's just for appearance things. In which case what we have here could be one of the last games of it's type so hang on to your cd key and in twenty years time when you reload this game on Windows Vista15 there'll be enough modules to keep you going into retirement !

The more I think about it the more I like this game and what the community is and stands for ( sharing, giving and not for profit ) so personally I'm not dead, just in limbo waiting for inspiration whilst I do all the things I've always meant to whilst modding ( there's a big list ).

Tsongo..

An excellent point. One might hope that at some point those companies will release bargain versions of their "classic" games that don't require internet access. I'm not going to hold my breath though.

A potential problem for NWN2 though, is that at some point it may not run on a future version of Windows. Let's hope that is a long ways off!

rjshae... No breath holding here either !

Should there be a problem with Windows Super Mega 69 I have faith in the brains of the community to find a work around if necessary ( don't ask me though I just press buttons), I think it's actually improving and Windows 7 is better than Vista. It certainly seemed more straightforward with less hoops to jump through to install, in fact I think all I did was disable visual themes and that was it..

We'll have to wait and see.. Tsongo

rjshae, the day NWN2 won't run on a Windows machine is the day we'll have WinBOX sitting right there on our desktop alongside our older friend, DOS BOX. Not to worry. And if it isn't a Win Compatible game at that point, I'm pretty sure we'll have a successor. These kinds of games continue to come out every so often. I have hope and faith. (Then again, I also have a Plan9.)

I have this nasty habit of buying more games than I can possibly play. The Steam sales are usually responsible for that. Members of this forum sometimes point me to a game I should play and succeed in convincing me. That's what happened to NwN2 and older BW games. I think if I stumbled on NwN2 at the time it was released then I would have played it more often. ;)

As far as I'm concerned, the biggest threat to this community right now is the state of the vault. I've been unable to reset my P/W so I can't vote on PJ's latest mod or any of the other great work still sitting out there. That and the spam bots have gotten so bad some threads are almost unreadable. Are there any mods on duty at the vault anymore?
