I was playing through Dragon Age 2 again and I came across Varric's companion quest in Act 2, where Bartrand comes back for the idol.  One thing caught my attention:  the survivors in the mansion all said that Bartrand was hearing "singing" coming from the Idol.  He came back because he wanted to find the Idol again so he could hear its singing.

I was suddenly reminded of the Broodmother (or The Mother) in Dragon Age: Origins - Awakening.  She would often say that she wanted to hear the "song."  I assume the song she meant was the call of the Archdemon when it awoke.

I'm not sure if someone has mentioned this already, but here's what I thought:  I thought that the red Lyrium Idol may have actually been lyrium that was corrupted by the Darkspawn taint in some way.  That could link the two "singing" references.  The song that both Bartrand and the Mother hear could be the same song the darkspawn hear from the Archdemon.

Food for thought.

I had the same theory too! Didn't a Dev say that we'll know more about that part of the Deep Roads and the idol in the future? I guess we'll have to wait till then.

Actually, lyrium "sings" as well. Justice makes reference to it in this dialogue.

Justice: The version of lyrium that mortals dream of in the Fade … it is not the same. Here, it sings. The sound is something only a spirit could hear, but it summons an ache that I didn't know I had.

Justice: What is that sound? Such beautiful singing. The stone within this ring … is it lyrium?

The question is, how was Bartrand able to "hear" the idol when only spirits should be able to do that? Maybe that's what drove him insane.

People watch the American Idol to hear off-key singing - no wonder Bartrand went nuts.

It would be funny if just the natural blue lyrium corrupted Justice to go all Vengence-y in DA2, and Ander's hatred for templars only pushing Justice over the edge (and maybe given him a direction) if you will. Because almost as soon as he leaves the Fade, he starts to act less and less like a spirit.

I'm wondering if all the types of lyrium are corrupting agents, and it's just that the mortal races developed a slight immunity to it over the ages. Dwarves getting a bigger immunity from it because they work it and live next to it for so long.
