Playing a qunari = forced race, forced gender, forced ideology, and a lack of class choice.
Tell me again how this is a great opportunity for role playing.
Sounds like Dragon Age 2, doesn't it?
In all seriousness, you could choose your race, gender and class before even starting the game. Like the Grey Wardens, Qunari consist of men and women of all races and classes that just happen to follow the ideology. Qunari are just followers of the Qun, they don't HAVE to be Sten or Arishok clones. (Why do people still think that?)
I personally see a lot of role-play value in being someone who was raised by the Qun (or converted voluntarily or involuntarily some time before the game's start) but now find themselves in situations where they get to uphold, question or rebel against beliefs and lifestyles that they may or may not have ever even wanted. A female Qunari that chooses to fight, a Saarebas that tires of being treated like a beast in man's skin, a Qunari soldier or laborer that wants to do more with his life than be a drone with a sword or shovel.
Off the top of my head, I can think of three origins:
Non-Mage Female: Any race. Starts out as a peasant or priest who is forced to fight when the Call to Adventure whisks her away and then, through necessity or choice, continues to fight through the rest of the game despite it being against the Qun. May try to reconcile with the Qunari or become Tal-Vashoth.
Non-Mage Male: Any race. Starts out as a member of the Qunari Military, gets the Call to Adventure and explores human lands throughout the game where he may embrace or reject new ideologies or lifestyles. If a Kossith especially, if people expect you to behave like Sten or the Arishok, you can respond any way and prove them right or wrong.
Mage: Male or female of any race. Starts off as a Saarebas who is bound and gagged by the Qunari Military, gets swept up by the Call to Adventure (maybe separated from their Aravaad) and gets to experience freedom and independence for the first time (in a long time). May react to the new choices in any way. Try to redeem themselves to the Qun or become Val-Vashoth.
No matter how you slice it, I can see a heck of a lot more role play value than another whiney human noble or mage.
