Here's the actual Riccitello quote:

"Essentially, step by step, [BioWare is] adjusting some of the gameplay mechanics and some of the features that you'll see at E3 that can put this into a genre equivalent of shooter-meets-RPG, and essentially address a far larger market opportunity than Mass Effect 1 did and Mass Effect 2 began to approach," said Riccitiello.

It's wonderfully vague. You can almost read anything you want into it.

Thank you for finding the original quote.  Somehow it never ceases to amaze me how the media loves to paraphrase.  Will probably edit my previous post then and make my semi-apology :P

I also don't see where the multiplayer falls under "gimmicky" in the way you are using the word.  Another sensasionalist word that has lost its meaning due to over use.  Not many games have a separate multiplayer (not including normal co-op campaigns) that interacts with the campaign directly.  It is a gimmick in that it is innovative to Mass Effect, but again, I'm sure that wasn't your meaning.  Nor is it a money scheme on Bioware's part.  It's just a feature to add to experiment with and see if it works out.  Whether it does or not is yet to be seen.

I consider MP a gimmick, because every freaking MP game is the same damn thing. Co-Op or Free-for-all it's all the same features and BTW I HATE THE FACT THAT THE DAMN MP INTERACTS WITH SINGLEPLAYER!!

Yes, EA wants multiplayer to be in every title.  Yes, that's an idiotic marketing standard to force onto developers.  But it is not the reason ME3 was pushed back.  The second reason you are rather spot on however.

IMHO Mass Effect 3 was pushed back in part by MP aspect. I THINK the main reason was was because EA/Bioware was afraid it would get crushed or lost in the shuffle by Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3, Battlefield 3, The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, Uncharted 3, Star Wars: The Old Republic, The Transformers: Fall of Cybertron, Batman: Arkham City, Halo: Anniversary, and any other high-profile game that is to going to come out starting in the next few weeks.

I don't think MP had much to do with it, because I think whoever made the call to rush DA2 learned a hard lesson.

Batman Arkham City is definitely a gaming masterpiece, judging from the trailers seen so far. But as a rival for ME3? Really? How's a tank rival to ornithology science?

SURPRISE BUTTSECKS, I am extremely glad ME3 will have MP. See my posting history. The first thing I've done after registering on this forum was creating a thread regarding MP in ME3.

Why are you glad that MP was added?

Because I'm a social gamer. Playing with friends is always better than playing alone. It's stupid to deny that. And it doesn't even matter to me if it's coop or deathmatch. Or even capture the flag. I would've enjoyed any MP mode in the ME universe, excluding MMO.

I'm a loner. I perfer playing alone.
I don't have to put up with friends dropping in and out, having to put with annoying twits, and wasting time playing the same damn thing over-and-over-and-over-and-over again and never accomphishing anything, which is what every kind of multiplayer is a waste of my time.

Mass Effect 3 would so be so much better if the MP was left out of it.

Yeah, I can understand when it's, say, a 20-minute speech or something and you've only got a few paragraphs of text to work with, but I don't see much point when it's all of a few sentences.  Unless of course you're trying to work an agenda by smuggling your favored interpretation in. Not that I'm saying that the person you quoted was necessarily doing that.  I'm just really cynical after much observing of the antics of creationists, so I always wonder if stuff like that is deliberate.

For you perhaps, but many others don't mind.  You don't have to play it.  It isn't required in the campaign; its only an alternative path and possibly a buffer if you screw up on something in the game.  Hell, you can play by yourself, or with bots even if you want them (if they make it in or not, that is way up in the air).

I'm more or less the same way though towards how multiplayer is, especially when I'm going for a solo experience.  I find it monotonous and just a waste of time, just to earn a little rank and extra cosmetic or weapon that 10 years ago would have been available from the beginning for me.

But ME will be better with the multiplayer.  Bigger audience, more options...it doesn't detract at all as far as the core experience goes.  Now for me and my fellow PC users, we have to deal with Origin and anti-mod measures, but that's a whole other ugly cat in a bag.

Why? You don't have to use it to get the best ending in SP.

Nah, it was all paraphrasing for the most part but that was the only one that seemed to go into details.  So I thought anyways.  And looking back, I'm sure the outlet was being deliberate on their interpretation.

I think the delay was due to the fact that big games are coming out in the next two months, batman, skyrim...and that battlefield and other call of duty game.

Although I see battlefield and call of duty as nothing compared to skyrim and ME, it is still very popular.

lol even then Casey states right after that statement (which is vague) that you  can play SP and get the best ending.

I feel it was pushed back for multiple reasons. As others have mentioned, timing was high risk, pained responses from DAII being rushed, Casey Hudson specifically cited extra polish, and multiplayer testing and implementation may have all played a role.

Mmm...You're right that it's vague,  but if you follow gaming news in general you can read the real meaning.  CEO's from around the industry have been railing hard against Gamestop and used game sales the last couple years,  along with Piracy,  and they consider both the things equivalent.  Some companies have implemented "Once through per copy" where you can never restart the game after finishing it.  Others,  like Ubisoft and Blizzard have shifted to requiring constant internet connections.

EA's solution to both was Online Pass.  Implement a major roadblock that is unreasonable to get around in just singleplayer,  but make multiplayer a way to easily circumvent it.  Then require the purchase of a pass for multiplayer.  Voila,  now EA gets money from used game buyers and pirates,  and their "Problem" goes away.

That's all this was.  EA totaled up the pirated copies,  and rough assessments of used game sales,  figured $10/each for a significant portion of those units,  and decided to delay the game to implement their Online Pass initiative.

That's all this was ever about.  Online Pass.  "ME2's approach" is a reference to revenue from DLC they gathered from used game buyers.

Welcome to the Code Wheels of the 2010's.

It's funny. If this whole mess was going to be as we all predicted "Rawr! EA rush Bioware to make game and include MP!" then I would expect the game to have been released at the original date WITH mp.

Instead, they delayed the game. Regardless of whether mp is the reason or not, just the fact that they INCREASED development time shows that Bioware and/or EA does care about the overall quality.

Really? People have not yet put 2 and 2 together by now?

Of course BW delayed ME3 because of MP. And yes EA forced it down they're throats. Is everyone here that naive to even question such a thing? *looks at BSN logo* Oh.....

It wasn't. It was tweeted (no, Im not looking for it!) a few months ago when the game reached it's peak, and then it was delayed for MP.

In fact, that's known to be completely false: do people not remember all those tweets recently about dialogue recording, or those about the writers working on this or that conversation? Or those about levels still going through the approval process? Everyone seems to think that "in a playable state" is exactly the same thing as "totally finished".
