My bad.
Retail CD version of Mass Effect 1
CPU: Intel® Core2 Duo CPU E7500 @ 3.29GHz
RAM: 8GB DDR2
GPU: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 470 1GB,
Driver: nvd3dumx.dll,nvwgf2umx.dll,nvwgf2umx.dll,nvd3dum,nvwgf2um,nvwgf2um [8.17.12.8026]
Sound: On-board HD Audio Device, Driver: HdAudio.sys [6.1.7601.17514]
OS: Microsoft Windows 7 Ultimate x64 Service Pack 1 (6.1.7601)
Direct X 11
The problem occurs when i try to run the game's .exe file in any way shape or form. The flash screen appears then the screen goes black with the windows loading cursor in the middle and the game stops responding and i cannot get out of it without hitting Alt-Ctrl-Delete. Does the same in windowed mode except the screen is white.

Couple more questions:
- Did you apply the 1.01 or 1.02 patch (or both)
- Did you install DirectX9.0c that came on the disk, or did you cancel the setup as you have DX11? ME1 and ME2 both require runtimes that are only available on DX9, as DX11 is not backwards compatible enough for its requirements. Win7 is capable of running both versions of DX side by side without issue.
- Is it the Value Games Edition?
- Is your HD audio driver Realtek? The default driver supplied with Win7 for the Realtek HD audio system is known to be as buggy as hell. Download the latest driver from either your motherboard manufacturer, or Realtek's website.
-Have you run the config utility, selected the screen aspect ration and resolution, and saved?
- Are you running it via the Launcer, or straight from the exe itself? (masseffect.exe)
Something to try:
Run it straight from the exe and not via the launcher, alt-tab out, bring up the task manager, sright click on masseffect.exe, select "set affinity" and disable all but Core 0
Some things worth noting;
- Nvidia is really bad when it comes to their newer drivers and older games such as ME1. Even ME2 has problems with support on their newer drivers. Uninstall the new drivers, and install the oldest WHQL drivers you can find that supports your card
- Win7 came out after ME1 had been developed, and while we can get it running 80% ofthe time, sometimes it just doesnt want to play ball, no matter how much Win7 and ME1 are tweaked and fiddled with.

Its the original PC retail release, not a value pick or anything.
I patched it to 1.02 right after installation, and the setup wizard never asked me to install DX9.
Audio driver is Nvidia.
Ran the config utility and tried every screen resolution it had available to no effect.
I've tried Via game launcher and the .exe from the game directory.
I'll try DX9 and the other things you suggested and see how it goes but ME2 runs perfectly with DX11, it's just ME1 i'm having trouble with.

ME2 also includes a Dx9 installer it will use when you install the game, so you should have had both Dx9 / Dx11 already. ME2 is actually more lenient about the hardware it runs on than ME1 actually is (the system requirements published for ME1 were crap, at least with regard to graphics).
ME1 is also much more problematic with nVIDIA Geforce drivers newer than 258.xx

Well I've tried everything. I've reinstalled numerous times, patched to 1.01a then to 1.02, tried every compatibility mode, every screen resolution available in the config utility, started with the oldest available drivers for my GPU and worked my way up to the newest. installed DX9 off the Mass Effect 1 disc. Tried numerous sound drivers, tried setting the set affinity to core 0, and numerous combinations of all of the above.
I'm about to give up i think :-(

actually i've noticed that changing the CPU affinity for mass effect 1 to core 0 doesn't stay that way, as soon as i run the .exe again its back to using both cores, i change it and then the have to end the program in task manager and then its back to using both cores yet again.

Unfortunately the CPU affinity wont stay, its something that has to be set each time you run the game.
Does it still go to black screen and hang if you try it in windowed mode?

You should try changing screen aspect ratio, it solved my black screen problem
