For those of you who may become distraught at the end of ME3, don't think of it as "good bye." Think of it as, "See you later."
But it is goodbye. We'll never see what's next. We have to be satisfied parting with them, like giving a child to another family (no offense). You know it is right, but you still feel serious goodbye and separation. It will be sad and replaying is replaying. It is never those butterflies after a couple of years finally seeing their faces again. We have to say goodbye to the crew, and I hope they go with a mature ending, not a simplified mainstream movie ending that shooter fans will like. This one's for us who let ourselves drift into space with a wonderful team.

Look at Star Wars, 20 years later it comes back. Look at Halo, they didn't even make it 3 years. Ghostbusters is getting a new movie shortly, after 20 years. Syndicate, X-com, heck, Panzer General just had a game heavily derived from it released. Indiana Jones, Jurassic Park, Underworld, etc, all have movies in the works or currently filming.
You'll see Gears of War again. And I promise you, EA won't let Mass Effect end either, especially once they take a beating over the next year or two.

Lol. Halo was only promised to end its trilogy, not the character, hence the hidden ending of Halo 3 implying they could make Halo 4. As for Gears and Mass Effect, the companies have already said the franchises still live, but both Gears 3 and ME3 are confirmed as the end of all the characters featured in them. ME will continue but from another citizen's perspective.
We don't get to see Shepard and the crew after this. It's goodbye, even if ME gets other parts of its lore explored.

But, uh... It's going to be worse when it comes time to say bye to my main Shepard. I've grown super attached to him... And I have a tendency to get more than teary-eyed when it's painfully obvious that I have to say farewell to a character I'm attached to. I realize that I can continue Scotty's story through fanfiction and the like, but it won't be the same, y'know?
Right, I hope this makes sense. It's almost 5 AM where I am and the RockStar that i drank earlier has long since worn off.

I'd find it hard to be sad if I failed the SM in ME2 on account of the fact that you actually have to choose to fail.

I'm perfectly fine with saying goodbye to the team. As long as they get proper treatment in the writing, I can appreciate their stories, regardless of weather I'll see them again.
Excactly. Yeah, there will be a moment of sadness - like at the end of Lord of the Rings (books'n'movies) because it's over, but you can play the game or read the books again. You can take different decisions. You can continue the story in your imagination, write fanfics, draw pictures. All that stuff.
Everything has to end. The ME-series has to find its end before it's growing old - at least Shepard's story arc should end if not ME itself as series.
However, there are options how to continue the ME lore.
- Another trilogy with new characters some decades after the Reaper invasion. Shepard could be still alive and you can import old savegames so Shepard is "authentic". But he won't be more than Admiral Hackett - a quest giver.
- A reboot. Won't see any before 5 or more years after ME3, but who knows? A reboot shouldn't change much in the main story but should go for improving gameplay and more important: add more lore, more dialogues, more interesting characters & decisions.
- MMOG. I'm sure I read something about a ME-MMOG. Could be interesting - but could also go horribly wrong.

Well, I'll be very glad to see the ending. A dust off of my hands, satisfaction that Shep's story is done. No more hanging around for mths and mths, wondering what's coming next! Invested love? I invested most of my passion on another char whose fate is unknown. This char (lAR I called her) has a stronger char buildup than Shep, better written. Playing the game allowed me to understand AR very well through her personal viewpoints on the ppl, environment and events that were happening to her. I "grow" with AR.
Shep is the standardised stubborn galactic hero. I like it that this char refuses to just lie down in the face of overwhelming odds and that being a CO does not mean keeping the crew at a very far distance. I like Shep but I wouldn't be going in circles around her (I like it that ME allows a female protaganist, that's a plus in its favor) like I do with AR.

I actually cried twice this week: during the first episode of Shinzanmono (goddamn Japanese and their dramatic TV series!) and a fifth season episode of House MD.
The Vermire choice made me sad. But no tears since I didn't like Ash that much.
When Tali found her dead father, I almost cried, if I remember correctly. Most emotional scene in ME2.
Few games have made me cry, though. There's only one that comes to mind: Lost Odyssey.
I will cry if Kaidan dies! Or when Shepard sacrifices herself for him.
I'll probably cry, too, if Garrus dies.
I really do want ME3 to make me cry (but I'd rather it wasn't because of my two guys).
I want a money-back guarantee if the game doesn't make me cry!

In my opinion, far too often in games, and even expanding that to TV and movies, you get unfinished projects, stories that setup a great character or a story with fantastic potential, and then poor sales, ratings, whatever, and that's the way it stays. That experience is always kind of ruined a little bit, because it never got to develop and see a proper conclusion. I'm relieved to see Shepard's story run it's course, no matter what changes for good or bad happen down the road to the series, at least this is complete.
I like my replays, like starting a great book or a great movie trilogy, it doesn't lose that sense of adventure, you can go back to it again and again to start and finish that journey. That makes me happy. So bring on the finale.

I hope that we get a fitting farewell to the series and characters, personally I'd like to see something similar to Fallout 3 & NV where the epilogues for each character are detailed by their own VA, which in my opinion, brought a great conclusion to the story.

ME3 will likely not be as grim. Yes we will get most probably a "Dom" moment or two but remember also that Shepard has a long standing love interest (possibly) who will also possibly give him a child (in my case a blue one). Also ultimately most of Marcus' closest friends are still alive at the end and also Anya (and Sam....god claudia black's voice is sexxxxxy) so it was not all that sad
