hehe, it's nice to have some people in the thread who know what they're talking about.
I gave the Mechanic a try during LotSB, I couldn't see that much of a difference, so I'm just gonna stick to it for now.
I just uploaded the first part, Baria Frontiers and the Vasir fight. I never used Stasis before during that fight, but Vasir is so annoying when she's constantly running away. She just got what she deserves.
The first fight was really a challenge, there is no real pattern how the enemies spread out over the map and that made it a tough fight for me.
Oh and the second encounter with the 3 soldiers was also somehow tough, I just couldn't get them heads on, without going down in a split second, so I had to do it slow.
I don't know when I'm going to do the rest, but maybe even today.

I'm still waiting for statistics and diagrams to pop up ; )

But I really appreciate it, it's interesting to hear what people think about the pros and cons of certain powers.

Great job on the parking lot fight !!

The Overload + Cryo combo for the cars works really, really well.

Playing with Vanguard I like to do Overload + Pull + Warp bomb. That's always satisfying,  but has the problem that the bomb doesn't outright kill the 3 mooks and they can get spread out because of the explosion. I've been killed there because I lose track of one and get shot in the back

But that doesn't happen with Cryo blast. They stay together, eager to be shattered to pieces...

Ha, I wouldn't go as far as diagrams but still...

Took some screenshots to test Heavy Incinerate with both Mechanic and Demolisher passives.
Level 18 Shepard, 3 tech upgrades

I used Mordin's LM

The 15% bonus damage is there, but seems small in all cases.

And the thing is, there are 6 upgrades ( 60% ) and 2 pieces of gear to boost power damage (those do work, for another 8% ). None to improve duration.

All those bonuses are "free", in the sense of build and skill points. And since the bonuses are applied to the ability base damage, that 15% from Demolisher is less than that when you graduallly get the upgrades.

This is why I'm inclined to pick Mechanic over Demolisher in most situations.

Good stuff. The duration bonus seems like the superior choice.

Some good stuff in this thread. I tried an Engineer playthrough quite some time ago, and I couldn't get into it. This thread inspired me to try again, and I'm enjoying the hell outta it. My first run, I tried using drone way too much, and I wasn't having much success, since drone only CC's one baddie at a time.

This time through, I'm using drone more selectively, against Krogan, YMIR mechs, etc, and using my other powers/guns on most enemies. It's a blast, really. I don't play exactly like the OP is, since I use drone quite a bit more, but way less than I used to, and it makes for a more interesting game.

I think I'm going to pick AR training on the DCS, instead of SG, because I'm not all that good at shooters, and I like the range option of the AR. The Mattock is nearly as effective at CQC ranges as a SG when I find myself there, but more forgiving at higher ranges.

Thanks for the inspiration, and keep up the awesome gameplay! I look forward to more vids.

The Engineer is one of my favorite classes, so I'm happy to hear you've experienced the joys of engineering!

Remember that drone is beastly at CC'ing a SINGLE target, while your other powers are good Area Of Effect skills. Using drone on high priority targets like Krogan, YMIR, Heavies, Elites and other similar enemies, while using your other abilities on mooks is the right idea.

And CaolIla thought I liked to run experiments!  Great info, diagrams make it clear.   Reminds me of my Miranda weapon damage passive experiment - the effect is real, but when you add in all the other stuff you can get it looks small:?.

@jwalker: I would go as far to say that area Cryo is may be the best power for those stripped goons in the parking lot fight. I just love it how they pile up and are waiting to taste some elbow and Incinerate. Incinerate because the piled up dead bodies block your elbow... never had that problem before ; )

And thx for the pictures, the damage boost really does look marginal, good job.

@Khevan: Me barely or not at all using Drone is just my own stupidity and using them on high value target or Heavies (for the joy to watch them kill themself) is the most effective way to use it in my opinion.
And AR would be my usual choice, as you might have noticed I still miss a lot shots with the SG even when I'm so close up, that it's harder to miss than to hit. I'm a shooter guy, but not a really good one.
Oh and I'm glad you like it so far.

@Mord... Ryo: I haven't forgotten your dedication to and achievements in the field of science ; )

Which is exactly why I love shotguns. I am no good at aiming. :P Besides, using your abilities to force yourself in deep behind enemy lines is tons of fun, and very rewarding when you figure out what combination of powers work best.

man... I'm doing the Hatch fight right now and took a coffee break after several unsuccessful tries. I just re-watched your Hatch fight Mi-Chan - still as impressive as the first time I saw it - and what would I give for being as fast as the soldier ; )
As soon as they spread out, it's so easy to lose track of single enemies, there's always someone I'm forgetting frozen or staggered by singularity and that bites me in the ass. It' tough for me to play offensive without getting killed during the first wave, and I didn't even beat the second wave once so far ; ) It might take a while to figure something out or have enough luck...

Ignore the heavies. If you move in a perpendicular direction they can't hit you. Go directly for the mooks with the Assault Rifles, as they tear through you like butter. The Asari isn't dangerous at range as she uses a shotgun - singularity will shut her up. Other than that you need luck. I was lucky with enemy spawns (The Engineer basically handed himself to me!), so that counts for something aswell.

Its funny, RedCaesar97, Mi-Chan ( both claymore soldier ), and I ( revenant ) have posted videos of that hatch fight within the last two weeks. I'm with you - I watched everyone's strategy on that fight and still had a lot of trouble ( especially with that second wave, which I consider the hardest ). The engineer drones are what kept me in trouble, that and trying to take any kind of cover. Will look forward to what you come up with.

I also like what khevan said, your engineer run looks a lot more fun than the one I recently completed.

The hatch is like Object Rho. Quite tough but ultimately very satisfying. If you can get those locations down to science you're golden. The reason I try to be as aggressive as possible in those two locations is to learn from every off camera mistake. It's the best way to get "good" ASAP. :wizard:

I've finished the hatch fight after a loooong break and I think one and a half hour of unsuccessful tries. But just EVERYTHING went wrong and it's pretty much boring to watch.
I think I'm going into another round against the hatch tomorrow, to see if I can salvage at least a tiny bit of my dignity, but so long, you can see me fail with some explanations what I'm trying to do and why even the first wave keeps breaking my balls ; )

Trust me, that fight is tough for anyone not named Kronner or Arelex.

Incinerate having a fixed duration is news to me - just like it's no shield bonus :(

Re: Mechanic

Haven't watched all you videos yet, but I'm curious if you noticed with your Engineer what IMNWME mentions here:

Within the Total Control - Engineer + Dominate guide, IMNWME wrote...

11/01/10 update: Spec your passive to Demolisher, not Mechanic. The 15% extra duration works a little weird with Dominate... your minion keeps his Dominate Barrier for the extra second or so, but he will no longer be under the effect of Dominate, meaning he will shoot at you (blah). Found this out after extensive testing with rank 3 and rank 4 Dominate. I guess giving Incineration Blast and Overload an extra kick never hurt...

Thanks for the info Simbacca. And I haven't noticed it so far, most certainly because I don't use Dominate that frequently and the whole stuff on the Broker Ship keeps blocking your view so it's hard to keep track of dominated enemies.

So I finished the hatch fight again and this time... well it's ok. I just couldn't play as aggressive as I would like to but I think that would take another bunch of hours to achieve.
I use Stasis a lot during the hatch fight and heavily rely on the elemental part of the build name.
I count it as a failure, but I was sure there would be fights I can't handle the way I want to. So it's my fault, don't blame the build :P

After a break I felt motivated enough to do the rest of LotSB, and man that part is easy... in comparison to the hatch at least ; )
It was fun and I think the SB fight turned out nice. It took a few tries to get the staggers right but I don't think the fight was good for my heart. And thank god the SB isn't as ballsy as a krogan and gets staggered by Incinerate.

That reminds of...

Turian: So what do you think ? Maybe a shotgun ?
Human: I like the assault rifle. It's like a nonstop barrage of death
Turian: If you can hit anything.

Turian: I still say we should join the Blue Suns. They'd probably pay for our equipment
Human: They probably only hire you if you look like you can fight. So we'd need something to start with.
Turian: Right, like a shotgun.

Turian: Do you think the Blue Suns have different commando training styles ? Like one support group, and one close-quarters unit ?
Human: You're going to talk about the shotgun again, aren't you ?
Turian: I may have been heading in that direction, yes.

Turian: All I'm saying is that you shouldn't skimp. Aim for the best, you know ?
Human: I thought guys with shotguns never bothered to aim.
Turian: Okay, that hurts a little.

Turian: You should get the sniper rifle, though. Snipers are a rare commodity.
Human: I think I'm going to stock up on body armor. If we join the Blue Suns, I want to survive my training.
Turian: Don't blame me when you get mauled by a varren and you don't have your shotgun

hmm... didn't know that, though I rarely use Dominate. I don't like the falling down the targets do. They don't get aggro'd until they stand up. That animation lasts a couple of seconds and I believe it takes up from the total duration. Still, it can be successfully used.
I remember Boz' Pyro Joe in Arrival
