Recently I tried the Spirit tree since whenever I make a mage hawke she always has the same spells. I though id try something different :)
I actually rather enjoy it. The spell "Walking Bomb" in particular works very nice if you can get a lot of mobs huddled together. I find it more fun than the other trees. Also I always struggled to keep mana up on my hawke and the spell "Death Syphon" works amazingly <3 Never have it off.

Does anyone else use this tree?

Yes try "Despair" & "Arcane Fortress"... helps to keep your tank alive.

I usually give Merrill the opposite spells I'm learning to keep variety up.

Sure, it has some solid spells.

Death Syphon as you pointed out works very well especially with the +5% health for every corpse. Some battles they just throw a lot of fools at you that you can kill easily. Death Syphon is very powerful in those battles as you can be at 100% strength when fighting the boss(es) in those encounters. I suppose it's unnecessary if you just potion chug but that isn't really fun.

Spirit Bolt/Strike is very powerful when an enemy is DISORIENTED and has both a short cooldown and activation cost.  Combine that in addition to Stonefist/Golem's Fist after Varric has launched a Fatiguing Fog then it's good times.

Dispel Magic is a must for me as it can easily save your entire party by dispeling a blood mage or an arcane horror's bomb spells. It's even more vital for me as I play Nightmare without using any potions.

I'd recommend giving Merrill both Spirit Bolt/Strike and Dispel Magic even if your Hawke has those as well.

I was wondering what dispel magic might be used for since it doesn't seem like our party gets hit by lingering magical status effects much. So it will stop a party-killing AoE attack from a mage/arcane horror/sarebaas?

Edit- I tried it and it did
