MMO gamers aren't really hardcore gamers because even though they play a lot, they usually just play one game. Most people who play World of Warcraft play World of Warcraft and nothing else. I can't consider someone who just plays one game a hardcore gamer no matter how much time they invest in it.
A true hardcore gamer likes a large variety of games. Besides, most people who play MMORPG's don't really play them. They just stand around in Ironforge/Ogrimmar with their thumbs up their butts hitting on blood elves and saying "LEEEROOOOYYYY JENNNKIIINNNS" thinking they're funny since they can repeat an internet meme.
Also, as for steam sales being comparable to piracy. I wasn't directly making that comparison, but spending more money to obtain what you want when it's new shows more dedication towards gaming than waiting months for a steam sale.
When pirates say they only pirate so they can try it out and then buy, what they usually mean is they'll buy it once it's 2 dollars or so on steam. So often times piracy and steam sales are related since it's a way for PC gamers to ease their guilty conscience.
Are you serious?
MMO's are usally if not always more complex then your average game. Take a look at Eve Online. Much more "hardcore" than any game you can possibly think of.
Also your saying PC users only buy games on Steam sales yet you have no problem with people buying used games? You do realize either way the devs/publisher don't make money on a used sale or piracy.
