If there is one thing that has managed to consistently ****** me off regarding DA2, it is the damning and frustrating nature of some battles.

"Oh **** an assassin, quick focus it down.Oh no, it went stealth. I hope it doesn't target X or I'm screwed, oh **** damn I HATE THIS."

"Oh, this is a caster enemy. Hmm, what does he do. Oh great, you have 1 second to react or it one shots you."

Fights like the Sky Horror (which I'm attempting right now) force some certain class and companion compositions that you have to take or you're screwed. I tried without a tank and healer, with varric isabel tallis and my mage Hawke. Result? Whole party is dead in 2 minutes. And what if you take the optimal setup? You miss the party banter/dialogues as a  result.

I take Aveline, Anders and Tallis together with my mage, and I can actually fight for some time. That is, until I get caught with my Rally on cooldown or without enough stamina to cast it, and one of my party members die, and it's over. You just can't get back, you get overwhelmed.

Look, I'm all for hard games. I'm actually playing this on Nightmare difficulty. But hard fights are one thing, having to play through a damn coinflip is another. You need pure luck to beat some scenarios. For example, if the Sky Assassin focuses Aveline for the wtfownagebackstab instead of say, Anders or Tallis, then I might actually kill him. And then what ? Sky Horror returns to the battlefield one shots either Anders or Tallis with the purple cloud.

Seriously people, how is this fun? I'm pulling my hairs for the past hour trying to beat it. I know it is supposed to be hard, but this is not hard, it's downright close to impossible with a certain amount of chance that relies on whether enemy will target which companion. You have no control on this. I'm trying to do all I can, try to position well, use focus fire, try to use the spell migitating abilities to get out of situations, but just no, at some point I get the heads instead of tails, and I'm screwed.

What if we had something like, say 3-4 seconds to react? That if, say we're completely dumb and we don't move from the thing we see in front of eyes, it one shots any member. But no. It's not. Keep flipping the coins and cross your fingers.

Please Bioware, this new "Your party member gets one shotted if." thing is just too frustrating. There are other ways to make challenging battles. Corypheus was a good example. Nothing one shots you, but you have to be careful, you have to be aware of where you are and move according to that. That fight was satisfying. What about the High Dragon in Act 3, you have to take care of where you stand, move as a party, try to be at right place and focus down the adds, all the while trying to dish extra dps on dragon and keeping your party alive. That was also another good example. Some of the fights are not. And something needs to be done.

I haven't even fought other bosses or the final boss of this new DLC. I hope I have a rabbit's foot or something around. Because I fear I'm going to need it.

I brought the wrong party for the fight, but I realized what I needed to do essentially. I needed to watch how many enemies were left before the Sky Horror jumped in, and move my characters away from the incoming AOE. Did that on a PS3.

In the end, My Mage Hawke and Isabela lived to see tomorrow. This was Act 1 by the way. Right after I got every single possible Companion. And I died 4 times trying to figure out what to do. XD

Although I get your gist, sometimes it feels like certain parties have it easier. But sometimes that's how it really is.

I myself don't particularly like the arcade feel of some enemies/fights, but when I think about it the solution to fix it doesn't come to me. Too fast would fights consisting of offensively poor health bags become utterly boring and uninteresting. The way as it is now, at least on nightmare, you're forced to learn through reloading the patterns and strategies of enemies, so that when something spawns you react appropriately.

Most enemies that require handling give off some warning or spawn slowly, so you don't necessarily need lightning reflexes (or you can just pause). So there's that.

And another thing, that at least for me it took a while to get accustomed to (actually I still do it all the time) is that you don't need to reload as soon as a party member drops. There's options to resurrect them or just leave them lying there until you mop up everything.

Anyway, don't say that you need a super optimal party, I made that fight on nightmare with Hawke the rogue, Tallis, Aveline and Isabela. Took a couple of tries to see the mechanics of the fight, but I wouldn't say it's a special stop for the flow of the game.

Heh, about the luck thing, now you reminded me about a fight in Baldur's Gate that always frustrated me. The assassin at the stairs of the Friendly Arm Inn. It was always whether I could roll the hits enough before he cast magic missile with 3(!) bullets insta-killing me :) .

That fight with the Sky Horror was tough. Took a few tries but I just beat it now with DW Hawke, Merrill and nuker Anders on nightmare. Focus fire ended up the way to go (for me) and move to point to avoid taking too much damage from the aoe attack.

I also stocked up on Mythal's favour grenades before starting mota just in case to use on Tallis since she's got that lovely ungimped Drop Dead ability.
