Two words. Broader appeal.
I don't think EA would envision competing with Battlefield 3 and CoD, there may be some peripheral overlap, but the underlying characteristics of the segments are divergent and they are released in different fiscal quaters.
I could go into more detail regarding segmentation process, life cycle, perceptual mapping, revenue margins, marketing mix, IP position, distribution, advertising, promotional venue, unit pricing, economics and quantitative analysis. But, I won't.
1) No internal data to draw conclusions from, making it entirely hypothetical.
2) Multiplayer inclusion has been on EA's agenda for a while now, I don't think it has so much to do with competition. Online passes and the second hand market are a more likely, considering they appear to have lost on the piracy issue.
3) I'd bore you all to tears
Finally, the multiplayer appears fairly good, seems to be an optional part without damaging the flow of the SP campaign. I'm happy to wait and see how thing play out at the moment as the details are still rather vague.
