Like I said, poignant moments, and there are an abundance of them in ME 2. I haven't played the original ME and it's good to see some input from the original as well.
BioWare has managed to pull my heartstrings in many of their games, and ME 2 is no exception.
Are there any Mass Effect moments that actually made you sad?

Nef's diaries, in Morinth's loyalty mission. Nef thought she'd found someone who truly loved her, someone who saw how truly remarkable she was, someone who could rescue her from the slums of Omega....and it was all a vile lie from the start. "Sad" transitioned quickly into "all-consuming homicidal rage" at that point.
This example goes beyond the Fourth Wall a little bit. I made the decision to not send anyone to help my crew (Suicide Mission) in a heartbeat. I cared about my team, and refused to risk any of them for Cerberus personnell. When I got the message that they'd all died, it didn't bother me at all. But when I finished the suicide mission, and went back up to the CIC, the emptiness of the place seemed to scream at me. At that point I realised that I, as a player, had callously let good and brave characters die horribly. And I did it because they were Cerberus, an organisation I hated, because they callously kill people. He who fights monsters indeed....

"Oh, they took Cerberus lackies? Awesome."
But then I looked around and immediately thought we had to get them all back; I made sure they made it back alive.
Garrus's speech about not knowing what to do with grey hit me pretty hard, especially when his voice cracked. He tries so hard to do good, but he's blocked at every turn.
Overlord, of course, kills me every time - but that one is a given.

Your answer reminds of an old lesson taught by my journalism professor many moons ago... "Never ask a person a question that can be answered with simply Yes or No."![]()

Return to the Normandy crash site, reading of navigator Pressly's journal. He is the sole old Normandy crew memebr that was dearly beloved and very much missed in ME2.
I remembered talking to him when I first took over as CO of the Normandy and thinking he was a xenophobic ****** and writing him off. Then reading the journal on Alchera and in particular the third entry where he says that he's come to respect the aliens and that he'd gladly give his life for anyone on board, regardless of which planet they were from...
well frak, I hadn't expected Pressly to be what teared me up on that mission
in the first game there was the utterly messed up situation on Virmire of me having to tell Wrex that the salvation of his species, which I'd rejoice in on any other day, had to be destroyed and that he should let me do it
Asking Samara if she was okay after killing Morinth and her answer
The totally stricken expression on Jack's face as she fidgets with the bomb trigger on the flight back to the ship, and earlier on when she starts freaking out moving through the facility, and you realise that that old hulk of a building is still powerful to her and it can still turn her right back into a frightened little girl to this day, and that's why she needs it gone

That being said:
1. Miranda & Oriana
2.Thane & Kolyat
3. Garrus & Shepard on the way to Sidonus
are just a few of the scenes that really stood out for me.

That's not true at all. Morinth did she something remarkable about her. That's what drew her to Nef in the first place. In the end she did end Nef's suffering in the slums of Omega, didn't she?

for a given value of "end Nef's suffering", yes, though I think Nef would rather have continued with the suffering than had it ended in that way...

More heart in throat moment
Virmire
End of ME1, thought I'd done something wrong..
Beginning of ME2
Seeing Garrus again!
Garrus being shot in the face (again, thought I'd failed dramatically)
Well most big things really.
What really made me feel all "ooh err" was Overlord. That was horrible! Made me quite sad.
Also the fact that Feron had been tortured for 2 years. Felt like it was Shep's fault really.

God, I'd forgotten about that. The first time I did the Archangel mission, I was convinced I'm screwed up somehow, and thought I'd gotten Garrus killed. I was about to reload and try the mission again when Garrus walked in. I wanted to give that ugly old bird a huge hug, just from relief. There totally should have been a *huge the crap out of Garrus* Paragon interrupt there.

I'm not sure how you can consider Nef's life "suffering." She was clearly lonely, but if you listen to the mother's comments, it's very clear that any money issues Nef has are about to be solved. After all, four years salary for a single piece is nothing to sneeze about, and Nef had multiple galleries interrested in her work. Not to mention the fact that an appartment that close to Afterlife would have a pretty high price on it to begin with.
