I'm trying to form a decent story for a machinima and want to make sure I have my facts straight. It's been a long time since I've played the campaign.

Do dwarves disown those who go above ground or just frown at it? My memory is telling me that they lose their place in dwarven society altogether. I had this idea that a rising potential paragon makes a habit of sneaking above ground, but he dresses in full armor to protect his identity.

Paragons can still be elected during the time period Origins takes place, right? I know Branka was the first in a very long time, which makes me wonder if there's a specific reason they haven't elected more paragons.

On a related note, looking at the Wiki, how the heck is THIS possible:

Gherlon the Blood-Risen was born casteless. He would later venture to the surface only to come back and win the throne of Orzammar.

He had no caste, went to the surface, and then bacame their leader? Holy crap! Is there any more information on this guy?

They do disown them for going to the surface, Grey Wardens aside. Otherwise, surface dwarves are the same as the castless.

The reason Paragons aren't elected is because not many dwarves can do something that either gets enough votes in the Essembley, or changes Orzammar forever.

Gherlon the Blood-Risen is a once-in-a-million-years sort of thing, and the only reason he was able to take the throne was because he got the Paragon vote. Before that, he wasn't even really a dwarf, according to traditional Orzammar thought. Becoming a Paragon, though, immediately eclipses any former status or lack thereof.

Also, there's the slight possibility that Gherlon is a casteless tale that never actually happened, as no House Gherlon is seen or mentioned in the games.

Dwarves who go topside are stripped of rank and caste, and if they return, they would be branded and restricted to Dust Town like all the other casteless. Sneaking to the surface would be more difficult than it sounds because Orzammar is a fortress under constant siege. Every entrance and exit into the city is likely guarded and watched by someone. There's only two ways to even get to the surface: through the Hall of Paragons or try to find a way to the surface in the Deep Roads. Either way, no dwarf is going to be sneaking off to the surface without someone finding out about it, and no dwarf of rank or status would dare risk being exiled or stripped of caste just to see sunshine.

Although I assume there's some sort of dispensation system? The guards at the Orzammar gate stand outside but aren't outcasts; surely the entire dwarven army that fights for the Warden is allowed to go home.

Maybe it's the difference between going topside because you *want* to (horrors!) versus being commanded to by a lord?

Maybe these two codex entries on surface dwarves will be of use to you?

Surfacer Dwarves (from DA:Awakening)
Surface Dwarves (from DA2)

The Dwarves have a massice hardon for records, there's no doubt that it didn't happen. There's plenty more Deshyrs in the Assembly at the Election than we get names for. Just because there's no mention of a House Gherlon in game doesn't mean it didn't happen.
