At the same time, take into account that trying to increase that 'amount of impact' of the story for people who attach excessive value to whether something is 'canon' or not by saying "this is canon, deal with it" can very well drastically affect the amount of impact the games can have, for these canon-oriented people. Because when the 'canon' gets defined then everything that doesn't match that 'canon' "didn't happen" and as such "lacks the gut-punch" and so "why should i bother", according to the line of reasoning you presented. And since BioWare is a game company first, well.
They may be a game company first, but I would assume the BioWare folks would like us to take their non-game stories as seriously as we take what goes down in a game, yes? It's my view that having a character exist in multiple histories--none of which is actual history--makes such a character harder to take seriously. If I attach excessive value to canon, it's only because I'm trying to take the DA universe seriously.
With that, I'll quit my spewing. Sincere apologies if I've been annoying and/or myopic and/or totally wrong. I'm very much looking forward to the comic, and--regardless of what the long-term consequences may or not be--it'll be fun to revisit some characters I dig, to finally see Antiva, and to uncover some secrets from back in the day.
