oh god.... Anders and Meredith is just as bad as imagining Emile de Launcet and Meredith.

AgreedImage IPB.

But that wouldn't count under inter-party romance, since neither is a companion...yet.

Still, glad we got the name thing cleared up. Carril it is. And that pair is getting a lot more resistance than I expected. I've never found Carver to be a consistent individual(except when it comes to being an ass to his older brother/sister), so I don't see that many issues for the two of them.

Plus it would be more fodder for my troll!Hawkes. For all his bashing of mages, it would be nice to throw Carver's crush on Merril right in his face.

Merrill has two Ls in it, btw (people seem to spell her name wrong almost as much as they do "Kaiden's"). And I suspect people's negative reactions to the pairing (or at least mine, anyway) come from the following factors:
1) Carver is generally an unpopular character.
2) Carver and Merrill have almost opposite personalities.
3) It cheapens the existing Merrill romance. If Hawke has to earn her friendship and visit her frequently and get her the elven tool to be with her, it seems pretty silly that all Carver would have to do is go on a couple quests with her on his breaks away from being a templar. Besides, multiple times in the game, whether romancing her or not, Merrill tells you that you're pretty much all she's got.

From what i can gather, it'd be far more insulting to the Sebastian fan-girls if he hooked up with Bethany so easily.

Merrill romance is hard, sure. Sebastian isn't even "technically" a romance in the eyes of the developers and yet FemHawke has to jump through more hoops than a rhythmic gymnast to even get his attention.

Oh, I'm not arguing that I don't find the idea of Bethnay/Sebastian equally ridiculous, because I do. Especially because in all of my games, as far as I know, the two have never even met (you only get Sebastian after Bethany leaves, you only get Bethany back after Sebastian leaves, and I don't bring Sebastian to Legacy/MotA).

Ah, my bad on the Ls. I've been playing with subtitles off lately, so... yeah.

I agree with you completely on 1). Definetely a factor there.

But with 2), I don't think they have 'opposite' personailties. Granted, Carver is pretty much the epitome of unlikability, while MerriLL is the same for being likable, I don't think they have enough opposing characteristics to be called 'opposite'. Different, certainly, but I don't see them as being foils of one another. And even if they were opposite, I don't think that would necesarily stand in the way. Heck, it might be part of the attraction.Image IPB

Now as far as 3), I admit that might be why we have objections, but I disagree with the premise. No matter what, I don't think Carrill can be judged anywhere close to a full romance at this point. Right now, we've seen nothing more than a simple crush. No way it's gone beyond that. Carver can't even manage to ask Merrill out on a bloody date! In the future it might go beyond that, al la Fenris/Isabella.

But for now, it's pretty harmless and low-key. In the future, with DLC/Expansions that take place post-game, that might change. And it will never go to the same depth as a Hawke romance, as the player would have very little say in how it all would go down. Hawke has no call to stop Carrill from occuring if he/she isn't not in a romance with Merrill.

not to mention the fact that Merrill says in banter with Aveline that she likes Hawke a lot (of either gender). She makes it very clear that she's got the hots for Hawke and not Carver.

And I agree that it would cheapen the romance if Carver and Merrill were together. Hawke has to a ****load of things to be with her and Carver only sees her once or twice every few years since he's either a Warden or a Templar. There's no way in hell that they'd be together.

Carver should just stick with the girls at the Blooming Rose or Peaches.

I would argue with this.. If romances did bloom between certain party companions and Hawke's siblings, i would like the chance for Hawke to voice his/her opinions. They're Hawke's sister/brother.. If things like Carver and Merrill happened, my Hawke would want to damn well give her opinion on it.

Between other party members? Fine, Hawke will stay quiet. But siblings? No, i want the chance to voice my opinion on it. Good or bad.

Oh, I'm not arguing that Hawke shouldn't give his/her opinion on the matter. In fact, that would be a really cool aspect of the relationships beign there in the first palce. Plenty of my Hawkes would refuse to remain quiet about the issue.

But regardless, if both Merrill and Carver wanted to pursue a relationship(granted, that's a really far ways off), and Hawke is not in a romance with Merrill, there's not much that Hawke can really do to prevent it.

But if Hawke does not romance Merrill by Act 3, what do you expect Merril to do? Pine after Hawke forever? I think it shows excellent character development for companions to move on in that senario. Isabella and Fenris did. No reason Merril can't. And if she should choose to do so with Carver, I think it would be an interesting development.

I see it hasn't taken you long to take Merrill's second "L" away again.:P

Have we been confirmed that there is going to be any post-campaign DLC in which this would all theoretically take place? Or are we just speculating that there could be? And if there was,why would Carver be in the party? Shouldn't he still be with the Templars? (or Wardens, I suppose, for those who took that route)

I'm not saying she can't be with anyone at all. Just not Carver. Merrill has no feelings towards Carver whatsoever, while Carver has only a physical attraction to her.

Yeha, I went back and editted as soon as I noticed. My bad.

And yeah, this is TOTAL guesswork on my part. I have no idea what BW is going to do for post DA2 plots, but I'd like to see companions that Hawke did not romance end up with someone. Preferably someone we know, so as to tie up some loose ends. I don't know if Carrill would ever actually happen, but I think it would be interesitng.

And just think of what Hawke could say when he/she finds out! It could even vary by friendhip/rivalry. If Hawke is rivalled to Merrill, the agressive could be "CARVER...BACK AWAY FROM THE CRAZY BLOOD MAGE". Whereas a friend would say: "MERRILL, TEMPLARS(WARDENS) ARE BAD..."
Or the sarcastic option could say "And he blames ME for siding with mages...." The possibilities for fun Hawke dialogue trees abound!

For me, Carver is the deciding factor when I choose between otherwise equally fun DW rogue and force mage, and the idea of him getting with the character I always romance just makes it worse.

As for Bethany and Sebastian: Me(and my Hawke) don't necessarily mind it, but I rivaled Seb, and if wants to be with her, he better be willing to make her Princess of Starkhaven. My Hawke wouldn't stand for his sister being some sort of shameful secret.

I enjoy the inter-party romances and hope they expand on it moving forward. I think it's a great way to show companions don't completely revolve around the protagonist and have their own wants and desires. Except for Isabela and Fenris. I never use Fenris for two reasons. First, because I hate him in general and use him as little as possible, in fact in most of my playthroughs I gave him to Denarius or killed him outright at the end. Second, because I want him as far away from Isabela as possible. Whoever thought they make a good pairing needs to have their head examined.

I approve of Carver-Merril, and Bethany-Sebastian however. I wouldn't mind seeing Bethany-Nathanial as a pair either if you make Bethany a Grey Warden.

I'm not opposed to the concept in general, but... well, actually, I never have to worry about either of these scenarios. Sebastian's gone off on his hissy fit and Merrill is with me, so I don't have to worry about either her or Bethany.

See, this is the problem. While some people may approve of some inter-party rlationships, we all have ones that we don't want to see. And while not having any particular two characters get together would anger nobody, having them get together would be sure to upset somebody. Which is why inter-party relationships are a bad idea to begin with; they ultimately upset those who don't like the pairings more than they entertain the ones who do.

Like I said, I love the idea in general. I don't like the particular pairing of Izzy and Fenris. That doesn't ruin the experience for me, I just ignore it by never having the two of them in the party at the same time and enjoy the ones I like. But I can see your point involving romancible characters. Most players "get attached" to certain characters and become possessive of them so maybe inter-party or companion-NPC romances are best left to characters who are not romancible i.e. Aveline, Bethany, Carver.

This is why it, technically, isn't a good idea.

People can like the idea, fair enough. But there will *always* be people that dislike certain pairings. There will always be people that resent certain pairings. There will always be something about it that other people dislike.

The idea that someone, somewhere... no matter what it is, will dislike something for one reason or another doesn't just apply to inter-party romances. If you look at it that way it sounds just like any other game system. I like a voiced protagonist, others don't; I didn't like the overall plot of DA2, others do. There are always people on different ends of the spectrum when dealing with any issue. To me, inter-party romances can do more good for the companion characters than bad. Will some people dislike it? Of course. But that's hardly something to be suprised about.

But that holds true in every aspect of making a game. I think inter-party romances would do more good than harm, as far as that goes. Of course, I may be underestimating the impending backlash. I did with Carrill.

It does. But consider this. Companion characters are a staple of Bioware RPGs. They're a key factor in their games. Infact they may even be the biggest factor overall for the level of popularity Bioware hold for their games.

Now consider each character Bioware create has a fan base, usually a large one. An NPC-Romance requires x2 NPCs. That's two fan bases, full of people that love a character to bits. The chances are you'll find a fairly large number of them against the idea.

And i'd like to clarify for anyone that hasn't paid attention: I'm not against NPC hook-ups. I'd prefer Bioware to focus more on the player-NPC hook-ups because they need to be expanded on.. But i am *not* against NPC hook-ups. I merely like discussing things from all angles.
