I've got nothing against Harbringer, I don't understand the animosity.

I don't see much diffence comparing to Sovereign, but yes, its catch phrases while controlling Collectors were irritating.

Replacing Harbinger this far in would be difficult to pull off seamlessly, and most likely would cause more plot problems than the characterisation issues it removes. However, I believe with some better writing, less trash-talking and decent screentime, Harbinger can be rescued and turned into a Sovereign-worthy villain.

Harby should have been more annoyed at Shepard for killing Sovereign. Sovy was constituted by "millions" of beings, a "civilization" in one, if I remember correctly. If you kill a whole civilization, it's almost like genocide. Harby should have been a lot more moralizing, punishing and threatening to Shepard, in the lines of, "Mankind will pay for its sins" (note, not as taunts in battles)

Replacing isn't the answer, they just need to change his dialogue and make him more intimidating, i mean why would you replace when all you have to do is CHANGE because it was only these small details that made Harbinger more annoying and a lesser villain than sovereign.

I would rather not see many Reaper Avatars around in general. In ME3, I think they should be more like a force of nature than a classic personified Big Bad.

Galactus, oh wait, an army of Galactuses are coming!

Oh no it's Dr Doom with his weakass Doombots

If Harbinger shut his mouth once in a while and stopped assuming control, I wouldn't mind him so much.

Well, in ME3 there will be (hopefully) no more Collectors. We wonlt have ot hear all of that annoying chatter from Harby. Because Harby really did talk too much. I wanted to roll up a newspaper and smack him.

I miss Sovereign though. He was a billybobbadass.

I agree but I don't think we will get blue or red options  when talking to Harbinger or any reaper for that matter.  It made some sense with saren since we could still reason with him enough for him to break away from Sovereign's indocrtination to shoot himself but that was a totaly different situation.  Besides Saren was puppet while harbinger is a puppet master.

I regretted pushing that blue button, I wanted to fight him.And then he shot himself. It was anticlimatic for me.

Really? that was one of the best moments in the game when Saren redeemed himself to an extent.

Totally. One of the hands down best moments. And it's not like that fight is anything special.

Depends how you handle the conversations before. If you manage to make him doubt for a second on Virmire then yes that suicide can be pretty good. But if Saren manages to be really determined all the way through then being able to change his mind at the end feels weak

So really IMO it comes down to that. I wouldn't completely object if you could bit by bit change the Reapers mind by showing humans and the co never give up etc etc (we are worthy beings and theres a way to change Reapers (they are just slaves, the circle can be broken etc) but if its just 1 or 2 conversations with simple Blue options yea then that's weak. That Humans & Reapers together should however be something damn near impossible to achieve requiring player to do all the right choices (in ME1 and 2 too)

I'd prefer it if his voice was alot more robotic and similar to Sovereigns'. His voice was not creepy at all. However he is good in his own way because he's not over-confident unlike Sovereign as he sees Shepard as someone who is willing to sacrifice anything to stop them. Also, he is more focused on killing Shepard which makes him more of a threat to you than everyone else and if he were to be replaced then they might not care and simply ignore Shepard which gives them the chance to rally all civilisations together. So he is good in his way but, not when compared to Sovereign.

I never understood the hate for Harbinger. Especially now that we know that each reaper is a billion souls working in concert and not just a machine. I loved both Sovereign and Harbinger, and I hope they introduce more reapers. It would be fun.

He would have been more scary if he was like "Interesting, it resists me.", talking like he would about a lab rat.

He gets a lot of hate, but IMO he has some great lines. But yeah, I agree that Sovereign is more awesome.

People like Sovereign more because he was the first reaper we ever encountered. Personaly I liked Harbinger just as much and I did not mind his chattiness to be honest.

Harbinger has fufilled his role of Harbinger a.k.a. the guy that talks smack before the army comes.

Let's hear from another Reaper preferably one like Praetor who destroys lots of stuff and is uber scary/powerful and doesn't run at the mouth quite so much as Harbinger.

I'd want somebody who'd be able to shut up for more than five minutes.

I think Harbinger was done well for the type of psychological warfare they were trying to pull off. What would have made it work better is if the numbers of Collectors Shepard faces at one time were higher - particularly if the individual Collectors had been a bit weaker and the Harbinger-possessed ones stronger (on the order of a Praetorian), and their numbers were such that Shepard was forced to retreat most of the time when they were encountered.

That Shepard and crew were able to repeatedly carve their way through the Collectors made the impact of the psychological warfare a lot lower.

In ME3, there will be plenty of opportunity to make Harbinger as scary as it should be.

...before we kill it.

He would have been so much more intimidating if he had said his one liners more casually and less often. More of a passive, yes I see you human, what's on TV... attitude would have made his Lovecraftian nature more apparent, and just made him less annoying overall.

I kind of perffered Soverign over Harbinger. He had more penage for being more mysterious. I mean seriously with that list of one liners come on! Besides Zakatak you forgot

"Ignore the fallen"
"Focus on Shepard"
"We are Harbinger"
"We are harbingers of your destruction"
"Leave the dead were they fall"

Frankly his lines are so bad I kind of came up with my own lines for what he says like:

"According to my instruction booklet 'this hurts you'. I don't know how much but it's suppose to be painful."
"Ignore the fallen unless they attack you first"

Agreed - less frequent on the one-liners would have made them more intimidating (particularly if he was harder to kill)

Like others have said, almost all of it comes down to the VOICE.

Sovereign sounded mechanical, inhuman and therefore unnervingly alien and inherently more frightening.

Harby sounds like typical deep voiced bad guy #1,523 from every other movie/video game ever made.

It's a simple fix, and based on how good the sound design is in the rest of the game, I find it hard to believe the sound guys or lead sound guy would let something like that slip.

No, I think this was a stupid decision from someone higher up the chain, that Harbster should sound more human so that his one-liners would be easier to understand in the middle of a fire-fight. So it's doubly stupid, when the answer should have been fewer taunts.
