I'm getting this error message after the splash screen when trying to launch Mass Effect.

"Failed to compile global shader FUberPostProcessBlendPixelShader"

Video card is Radeon HD 6790.  All the info I've found on "failed to compile global shader" errors for Mass Effect points to outdated/incapable video cards, which is obviously not the case here.  I've tried reinstalling the drivers, reinstalling the game, deleting the game's config files, clearing the shader cache (Mass Effect Config Tool -> Repair).  Other games work fine; it's just Mass Effect that I'm having problems with.

Do you have any conflict between the actual screen resolutions that your display can handle versus what you decided to tell it to try instead? If you have a 16:9 or 16:10 "Wide Screen" display, you will create the problem by choosing a 4:3 setting. You can also have a defective Dx9 (yes, "9", not 10 or 11).

Oops!

I didn't specifically describe the reverse as equally detrimental.  If you have a 4:3 ratio display, don't tell the game to use a 16:9 screen setting.

Do you have any conflict ... now, this is very odd.  How did I get a duplicate?

Thanks for the suggestions. Unfortunately, reinstalling DX9 didn't help.

I'm trying to run the game at 1920x1080 (16:9), which is the native resolution of my display. I've tried messing around with all possible permutations of the video settings on Mass Effect Config and nothing makes a difference. Could this problem be specific to the Radeon 6790?

It could be specific to a particular matchup of drivers and displays. There can be conflicts created when you have a second display connected, also. Have you tried an older driver than what you started testing with? (I know, counter-intuitive, but Mass Effect 1 is a quite elderly game now).

It shouldnt have anything to do with the 6790 specifically.
Are you runnign the game with admin rights, as well as in XP compatibility mode? Have you patched the game?

Aha!  Running in XP compatibility mode gave me a more detailed error message, at least...

Verify your Steam cache intergrity, and also download and install Microsoft visual C++ 2005 redistributable.

I uninstalled/reinstalled again via Steam and it worked. Thanks for the support, hopefully this never happens to anyone else.
