I have a Intel core i7 2600k
Powercolor AMD Raedon HD 6770
12gb Ram
Windows 7 64 bit. Everytime I bring it up from my steam Library It goes to the menu screen and I cant click on anything So it just stays there in the menu screen. Please help.
How can I get Star wars Knights of the old republic to work on my Windows 7 computer?

It needs OpenGL graphic support, which is very rudimentary in Radeons any longer. Check with AMD for possible special graphics drivers, or check on eBay for an old 2002 to 2007 time period card to use when you have KotOR running.
MINIMUM SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS:
* Windows ME/98 128 MB RAM
* Windows XP/2000 256 MB RAM
* 1.0 GHz Intel Pentium III or AMD Athlon processor
* 4 GB free hard disk space
* 32MB OpenGL 1.4 compatible video card with 32-bit color support and Hardware T&L
For a Radeon, you want an X850, with Omega Drivers, or an X1600. For a Geforce, you want a 6600 GT or a 7600 GS

You probably already have it on disk, but it's pretty cheap on steam and the version I bought there works fine on both my nvidia and ati computers.

Steam is such a screwup, IMO, that I wouldn't buy Bethesda's second Fallout because you had to use Steam, and I will skip their fifth Elder Scrolls for the same reason. Now, if Good Old Games was involved, that would be very different. I don't trust 'em, don't like 'em, don't want 'em (Steam).

I'm having the same issue, I've tried running compability mode as well (XP, SP3) but nothing changes it. Can we get people that have actually found a solution to this instead of saying off-topic things? Thanks.

There isn't SUPPOSED to be any "real" (new) solution to using new hardware on old games. It's already seven years old, at least, and it wants to run on older hardware than the very latest. That much is so very simple. Incidentally, since Intel chip graphics is 4-5 years behind where AMD / nVIDIA card graphics is, if you have a computing appliance that relies on an Intel video chip (Laptops have those most of the time), that could possibly work.

(The 9550 is actually a downclocked 9600, after having the X300 and X550 cloned from that one)
P. S. The above chart was drawn up back in 2004. In today's terms, the very slow Radeon 9000 was a dying snail, and the Radeon 9200 was a healthy one, although still just a snail.

Here is a link to a very large forum dealing with all sorts of KOTOR technical details. Check the second post on this thread, your game should be working in no time.

Here's what I did to get KotOR working - I had several glitches happening, never mind that the game wouldn't load up to 60% of the time.
Go to your local hard drive > Program files > Steam > Steamapps > Common > Swkotor and open up the config file. Disable movies. It fixed everything for me.
Yes, if you've never played it before, you'll lose some of the experience, but it's better than not being able to play at all. There's only one video that really matters, storyline wise, and you can youtube it, in a pinch.

I have Windows 7 and an Nvidia video card and my game was crashing every 5 mins. In order to play I had to save and reload all the time. Disabling the movies has really improved things - it has only crashed once since - could have been something I did. Now I would like to view the movies - just to see what I am missing and I can't remember where I disabled them!!!! Aargh!!!!

If you have crashes very often open swkotor.ini file which is located in the main game folder, then search for [Graphics Options] and move to end of that section (just before [Autopause Options] for me anyway), add the following Disable Vertex Buffer Objects=1 add a blank line after to preserve structure then save and try the game.
To disable movies look under [Game Options] you will see Disable Movies=0 change it to 1 if you want to disable them I guess, but that shouldn't be necessary.
If you find you can't click on anything the menu try alt tabbing back into the game there could a window getting "focus" behind the game like say firewall popup asking for confirmation, or steam community or something,

After some tweaking I can get KotOR to work on a Windows 7 machine with a Radeon HD 6870 in widescreen (using a mod). The only difficulty is loading which often brings me to a black screen, but alt+tabbing out and in again fixes this.

I'm a person who, until recently, hasn't had to worry about his computer's hardware. Can some direct me to a beginner's guide? Thanks in advance.
