It has been hinted that the quarians will want to retake their world, possibly in me3. Why would the geth need it? They can surivive on planets organics cannot, so what is stopping them from giving it back at some point for peace's sake? Has anyone even bothered to ask?

You do realize the Geth only occupy Rannoch so they can 'take care of it' for the Creators return, right?

1) They aren't on speaking terms. No Geth has ever tried to talk to a Quarian, no Quarian has ever tried to talk to a Geth.

2. The Quarians are so hell bent on retaking the homeworld by force (And destroying the Geth) that just giving them their planet without 100% certainty that the Geth won't be attacked latter seems deeply unlikely.

3. That's what ME3 is for.

Yeah, talking with Legion it turns out the Geth treat the Quarian homeworld like Arlington National Cemetary and Auschwitz-Birkenau... a war memorial for the Quarian Creators.

Legion actually says that they're only guarding it but have no intention of holding it away from the quarians, the problem is that, as AdmiralCheez said, the quarians believe all geth to be hostile and so they'd probably just attack them on sight.

Okay, fine.  Geth are isolationist weirdoes, too.  But you can't blame them for that any more than you can blame the quarians for holding a grudge.

Until Legion, who was only built two years ago Geth wouldn't have the intellgence in one area necessery to actually communicate with anyone without needing a large squad of them, which would almost certainly not happen without the other party panicing and attacking them, since thanks to the heretics Geth are seen as galactic boogymen. And since nobody was bugging them and the heretics weren't an active threat to them, they were content to wait.

It wasn't until this Shepard-Commander guy that they heard about on the galactic news made such an impression that the Geth decided they just had to have him on their side and built the Legion platform which would be able to hopefully communicate with Shepard without starting a firefight.

As for the Quarian's they've put so much of their lives into believing the Geth are evil monsters that slaughtered them and stole their planet, and the ultimate dream of every Quarian should be exterminating all Geth and retaking the planet back. The idea that the Geth are over it and will just casually give them their planet back? Wouldn't even cross their minds.

The Geth are probably holding it out of spite, something they themselves don't realize. They definitely don't need that particular planet.
