According to the poses here, Ashley is a super model, not a soldier and Kaidan is just average.

I sense the impending approach of a legion of haters. Prepare yourselves.
I was going to make a snide comment about the hooker pose in the concept art, yes.

Go back to the ME1 concept. You will find that most of the female concept arts involve them standing like a model. Which is exactly what these are for: models. These are use to create the 3D graphics. Concept art goes to graphic artists who make the mesh and the textures. Her character is already established. Thats the job for the writers. Your argument would hold water if Ashley was a brand new character. But she isn't. The guy writing her isn't the same guy drawing her. The guy writing is probably the same guy approving the model. But I doubt he is really looking at the way she's posed. If anything, the pose helps: it's a contraposto (twisted, weight on back leg) position (if you want a male version go look at the David) - gives better angles. Put Kaidan into that pose and a man twisting like that in armor doesn't work. Regardless of what you think of the outfit she's wearing, it's obviously more flexible then Kaidans. In fact, while your looking at ME1 concept, go look at Thane's concept art.Lucky Thirteen wrote...
Concept art expresses the basic ideas of a character. It's not just about their appearance. The pose is designed to express their personality and behavior.

However this is Ashley. Though she isn't one of my one of my more favorite characters, I can't help feeling something is wrong here.
Let's look at Ashley's original concept art:

There is a slight sense of sex appeal by the way she's standing, but it's not on the level of the new concept art.
There's nothing wrong with Ashley letting her hair down and putting on some lippy, being a little sexier, but I can't help feel like they've gone further than they should.

I wouldn't call it a hooker pose necessarily. If this were Miranda who by nature is the sexy, super model type, I wouldn't give a crap. It's within her character, the concept art matches.

Sure, this is sexy!Ash. However, in ME she doesn't appear like that. She's a soldier and doesn't even look close to that concept art - except for the Phoenix Armor, of course.
Basically - concept art tries to show the BEST out of a certain piece of equipment. You won't show a battlecruiser without its guns, even if they're entirely own stuff with own concept art, am I right? In this case it's about Ashley's armor.
*sigh* Ash will be Ash, no matter what the artist has in his or her mind.

Is Ashley not sexy at all in ME1? My point is the image of the original concept art is so drastically different in characterization from the new one. I certainly hope she remains the same in ME3 when it comes to personality, but this new concept art has me concerned that there's been a change.
Or perhaps this is just because it's Dark Horse comics that did the concept art. Those sorts of artist are just so used to putting women in ridiculous poses for no apparent reason but to make her look sexier to the max.

People are getting upset over how a character is posed in concept art. Sunk to a new low, people. I mean, really. Concept art.
I know right? And people actually wonder why BioWare don't release decent images on their own. I'll tell you why because ya'll over react to every little thing! I for one, couldn't give a crap about how she's posing. That's the least of my worries...I just wanna see the armor.

I'm going to highlight how ridiculous Ashley's poses are in two ways:
Women posing in public like models.
Men-ups
Everyone please note that Kaidan is just standing, not in a pose at all. This annoys the crap out of me and only heightens my awareness of how ridiculous Ashley looks, even though this is in an poor quality, fuzzy image.
But seriously, Ash's pose isn't that bad. Not enough to make me b*tch up a storm, anyway. I mean, a guy could take that pose and it wouldn't be too weird. Looks more confident than "sexy," just with hips.
NOW GIVE ME IN-GAME SHOTS OF THE ARMOR.

She's "different" sexy. Actually, Ash is much sexier ingame than the concept art, most likely because she got a character. Concept art is just that - concept art, without a "real soul". The "soul" or character is given later, either in a book or comic or the game itself. So Ash is sexy because of her character AND her looks.
Sorry you got me wrong

I guess that, despite being a guy, I don't like the way female characters are often handled, and I'm sensitive to attempts to "tart them up".

Still.. I'd be hard pressed to imagine why Ashley would stand like that at any point in game (unless trying to seduce Shep?)... so for now I'm just assuming it's a concept / design art pose and not something we'll see in game.

No, I don't hate women nor think they should be oversexualized, I just think it's a pretty pose. Yes, I'm bad and I should feel bad.
Your logic is tearing me apart, I'll leave the thread now.

I'm not complaining about the pose, but tbf no woman puts her hands on her hips and stands like that in a non-posed situation.
