Some people just don't get it and never will... I really don't understand why people think there's a benefit to ever being OUT of her blood magic sustain. You can easily get her enough BM bonuses and health regen so that her spells are, in essence, free. My Merrill's health is usually full again before she even begins to cast her next spell, while I maintain Arcane Shield, Rock Armor, Blood of the First, Elemental Weapons, and Wrath of the Elvhen (only really bothered to grab that last one cause I had spare points and wanted to get to her mage back-to-back cause I like it >.>)
And as someone else pointed out already, 1 point of CON is as much "mana" as 2-3 points of WIL for her. This is one of those situations where you may be entitled to your opinion, but the fact remains that it's flat-out better. If you think there is ever a reason to not using her blood magic, except maybe the early game when you don't have much health/gear for her yet, you're wrong.

stuff
garbage
mr afk is the worst player
read my guides and win
near the bottom: self: health at or above 50% - activate: blood of the first
below 25% for deactivate is fine too
it's really that simple, guys. mag/con merrill is better than anything else you can do with her. if you don't want to, fine, but it being the best is really not up for discussion.
225-250 health, rock armor, fully upgraded arcane shield: invincible demigod merrill
use the merrill builds in my guides

I get pumping her points into CON, duh that makes sense, but how much MP would she have to have so you don't have to hear her say "You think they're tiring, I'm tiring." every 2 seconds?
This is not an issue with HP/CON. It is actually a "feature" that all characters have when they are low on mana. Basically, when a character is at or below 10% of his mana/stamina, he will start to whine. Blood Mages of course, don't need any mana, so it's a wise choice to load up on sustains and make use out of that mana pool. But it comes at a price of having to put up with whining every five seconds.
And if you thought Merrill was annoying, try using Blood Mage Hawke with 90% of his mana pool reserved for sustains.

Wait...
Blood Magic takes up 70%
Wrath takes up 20%
Arcane Shield takes up 20%
Rock Armor takes up 10%
Elemental Weapons take up 10%
You say you sustain all of those at the same time?
How?

That explains why my hawke can go arcance shield/elemenatal weapon/blood mage /rock armor, but not aracane shield/elemental weapon/rock armor/ blood mage

My experience is different.
Testing it out I can activate as many sustains as I want so long as Blood of the First is up, but I can't activate Blood of the First unless there's 70% or more of the mana left. Things might be different if they're being activated by Tactics, I guess?

And what is the best use of her Stone's Throw ability? To set up in her tactics.

But, I digress. Best party members? Merrill and Varric.
naledgeborn: sorry, but I don't see how could Beth possibly ever be better than Merrill. Let's take a closer look:
1) Rock Armor
2) armor rune slot
3) insane durability
all of which Merrill has and Beth does not. The ONLY advantage Beth has over Merrill is Haste, period. When you're a warrior or a rogue additional dps increase for 20s does make a difference, but the mage has to be ALIVE to cast the damn spell - I am just an average player, mind you and archers in Legacy were a pain in the ass. Does that tell you sth? Only times you're able to use Beth apart form act 1 (in which I do, cuz back then dual Haste works beautifully) are Legacy, MotA and end-game part of act 3. I don't even mention the DLCs when only Anders can die faster than Bethany. The Last Straw - OK maybe I'm a bit harsh on dear sister, but I still think Merrill is better overall. Beth with Haste may be a more valuable party member in some fights, but that's it.
Though I wouldn't give Merrill 'The-Best-Party-Member-After-Hawke' spot just like that. See, when I'm playing a mage, PLR works better for Varric - my mage Hawke was switching staves to much for it to actually do some good. Lightning Speed+Well-Oiled+Embellishment+PLR+Haste(either me or Anders, or BOTH - dual Haste is really cool) and you've got yourself a machinegun. While Merrill is kicking ass in general, Varric with all that crap and high dex probably has the highest non-Hawke single target dps in the game. Unless Sebbie+HMttK is better, but tbh I didn't use Seb too much.
