Are you playing the OC? I don't recall fighting shadows at such a low level.

Are you able to turn them?
no, my turning is not powerful enough it seems. it just doesn't phase them.

As undead, they're "turnable" (is that a word?). But Turn Undead is pretty weak in this game. If that doesn't work, you can always blast them with spells until you get Blind Fight.

Yes, I'm playing the OC. I'm in neverwinter, and got a dungeon quest from the temple of tyr. i'm raiding some catacombs looking for a lost monk. This isn't the first time i've encountered one, but it's the first time i've had to fight them in large groups, and they are ripping me up.
And yes, i have noticed the turning is not very powerful. I would like to use spells on them, but there don't seem to be a lot of offensive divine spells. Inflict damage and sonic boom are all i can think of.

Still, you're at a low level there, IIRC, I was usually at level 8 or so at that point, doing all sidequests.

So, recap: Protection from Evil scrolls, amulets, rings; general magical protection, negative energy protection, holy water, fire, enchanted/magical weapon, magic missiles (a wand of magic missiles comes in real handy for thieves (erm -- rogues) and M/Us. Anything that improves your AC and DEX is a good idea, as well as whatever helps a fortitude save. Silver weaponry, blind fight, and don't forget a Bless spell just prior to combat (it provides its bonus to all in range who are not in combat at the time of casting -- at least in PnP, Gold Box Games and Baldur's Gate series.
With shades there is no stealth, no sneak attack, backstab or AoO (Attacks of Opportunity) because they are so hard to spot/hit and can't be critted with physical weapons. I'm not sure if a critical magical hit is relevant, just that some magic is more potent against them than others.
Consider pausing a lot and making short tactical actions every three to five seconds (a heartbeat is six seconds) and that should allow you to manage all the characters for melee, magic, potions, items, etc. And sort of think of it like you're pretending this is a Samuel Peckinpah directed sequence in slo mo. And you're the director.
If that doesn't help give you some ideas for tactics, actions and some new things to try, then try posting this also in the Original Campaign (Spoilers Warning) forum instead of here, so we don't give game specific or story specific information away in the Non Spoilers forum.

Also, as Arkalezth says, you're a fairly low level for that dungeon (unless you're a duergar or yuan-ti, I suppose). You may want to go do some other quests around town first - and go out the south gate of the Merchant Quarter so you see the world map, making sure you've been everywhere else. Also (mild spoiler), have you met any wolves or wizard school dropouts in Neverwinter yet?

Silver weapons, enchanted silver weapons even better, protection from Evil Spell, if you can find it a Rod of Turning and I believe holy water, healing spells and potions (like cure light wounds for example) should also damage any undead, including shades, wights, will-o-wisps, bainsidhe (banshee), spectres and ghosts. Get some PfE scrolls and cast them on your party members, cast enchanted weapon or whatever the hell it is they give clerics these days, and I think maybe fire spells and light spells can harm them as can magic missiles. Mostly though, you have to make it hard for them to get you. That level drain stuff ain't as bad in the game as in PnP, but it gets serious fast.

awesome, thanks for the great info. i had totally forgotten that healing spells can damage the undead. i'll have to reconfigure my spells for this dungeon. I have some holy water and a bunch of potions in my inventory, so i think i can put a decent run together.

Have you got Searing Light among your spell selection? Pretty useful for a cleric. And a cleric of Lathander with Sun domain will make those nasty shades tremble.
Harumph!
yes, i had searing light on my spell list, but i removed it for invisibility purge, which didn't do anything to change their 50% invisibility. I'll be adding that back on.

Nothing cures shadows at level 5 like calling a little lightning storm. You should have your companion load up and do the healing yourself for now. You will get more offensive spells later but for now, you're a meleeing medic.

I personally don't have lightning storm, unless i have somehow over looked it. The druid does though, so i'll be sure her spells are refreshed when we battle the shadows next. Thanks for the advise.
as for the quests.. no this is the first quest i have attempted since reaching Neverwinter. I like the challenge though, so I'm going to replan my attack now that I have some fresh info.

And don't forget the Lesser Restoration potions/scrolls/spells for regaining strength lost to shadows once the fun stops.

Do you have an arcane spellcaster? Fireball and fireburst would be very lethal.
