Voice acting did influence my choice in ME1, but not in ME2.

I never found Meer's acting great, but the line "Enjoy your drinks LADIES" was freaking priceless.

I think Meer needs to sound less like he is reading off placards, and Hale needs to stop overkilling some lines. Once, that is fixed, Grade A+ voice acting for Shepard!

This is going to be a little difficult as a useful sample for you as it's highly self-selected. That said...

Yes and no. I have too many playthroughs to count, slightly more male than female but by a pretty close margin. My first playthrough for ME2 was as a femShep (I'm a male player, if you're tracking that info). I chose a femShep for a variety of reasons. First, I wanted to romance Jacob and that wasn't an option as maleShep. Second, I like the idea of a strong female character. Third, I can't make a good custom male face to save my life, nothing like ME2faces.com existed (or had a decent sized database) and I'd gotten tired of looking at ShepLoo. Finally, I  thought either Hale was a slightly better voice-actor in ME1 or I kept reading about it and wanted to give it a try (I can't recall how I felt at the time).

Note that NONE of these considerations factor in that I am male. I still can't fully grasp the "I am a guy, so I must play a guy" mentality.

Ditto

Meer doesn't seem to have the same edge as Hale.  He sounds more like a fictional character and less like someone trying to save a galaxy that doesn't seem to want saving.

I pick gender based on my own gender mainly, and that goes for just about every game I play. I'm a male so I picked a male Shep, I do however have one femshep save though and enjoyed the game play as much as I did playing a male character.

As for voice acting I thought Hale did much better in ME1 than in ME2 and Meer did Much better in ME2 than in ME1. Hale just sounded bored all through ME2, and same goes for Meer in ME1, but I contribute that to bad voice directing as both are very good voice actors.

My first real introduction to sci-fi was the alien series, when my father let me watch the original when i was 9 or 10 (i think he just wanted to see how badly i'd freak out during the chest-burster scene), which was groundbreaking having a female as the protagonist. I also grew up with an NES, and was part of the generation that flipped out when it was revealed that Samas was a girl. I bring this up only because maybe i kind of grew up with the notion that a female lead in space is pretty awesome, and that might nudge me in that direction.

I've played both MEs a number of times with both genders. I've always felt more enthusiastic with femshep, and think Hale does a better job. I just personally think having a female play the role of a galaxy savior just adds a bit more flair to it. I like the fact that it's one more norm thats getting broken. Even tho I think Hale is the better actor, I'd probably still play a femshep if the quality were equal to my ears.

yeah, but it's because I wanted to hear what their lines sounded like through a different voice-over. I like both voices.

When I played the ME2 demo, I tried Maleshep but found his lines sort of lame. But, I had fun, so I bought ME1 and ME2. Did a full playthrough with Femshep, enjoyed it, was going to make another Femshep, but I decided to give Maleshep another go. Played as Sheploo and found his lines just as good throughout most of the game.

In a way, yes. For a long time, I played a female Shepard and when I finally tried a playthrough with a male Shepard, the voice acting was....bizarre. Meer sounded like he operates at the same speed as Mordin. Couldn't get into the rest of it after that.
Not to say that he's a bad voice actor, but I'm certain there's room for improvement.

Well for me it wasn't about voice actor in the beginning, first femshep I made was purely about exploration and finding out what kind of game I can play with her, when I played more with male and femshep I noticed lots of difference in how M. Meer and J. Hale act. In short Hale can often bring little bit more emotion than Meer and some times Meer sounds bit monotonous especially in ME 2, I don't want to say who is better voice actor as they have done great job.

Yes, it did. Half because I was something of a fan of Hale beforehand anyway, and half because I genuinely found her performance more nuanced. I felt she handled personality tones besides "angry space marine, grr" much more convincingly, whilst Meer just sort of... didn't. Which is frustrating, because I know that he can.

I had other reasons for making my Shepard female mind you, but there you go.

I make all my characters female because I am female. I tried doing a male play through but the voice acting sounded weird to me, probably because i was used to hale's inflections.

I only play female characters in RPGs, the voice won't influence that at all. Luckily both the voiced protagonists I've played (FemShep and Lady Hawke) have benefited from excellent VA.

To some degree, yes. I very rarely play as mShep, unless it's a renegade playthrough; his voice just sits so well with the @sshat personality. Most of my "canon" characters are female though, partly because of Hale, but mostly because I think they are so much more fun to customize and I am one myself. ^^
However, I do have to admit that I can't resist picking Lady Hawke over male Hawke in DA2 because of her sweet voice, even though I think Mark Meer did a great job as well.

Actually, I'm a female and first playthrough I chose male because I thought the way they modeled Sheploo was hot, he was quite the eye candy. :P Never been a fan of Mark Meer's voice acting though.
I have my other playthrough with femshep I customized based on myself and that's fine and dandy, but first time I decided I was gonna go through those 30+ hours of gameplay nodding at how they managed to make Sheploo quite sexy for pixels, not mentioning I am a concept artist and have worked for games before, I think the male anatomy is beautiful, and looking at videogames is a good way of learning a thing or two.

But yeah about the voice, I actually think Jennifer Hale's the better voice.

This

Meer just seems to be going through the motions and Hale seems to try to much sometimes (Jacob). While I do appreciate the extra work Hale seems to put in I pick femshep more for the sound of the voice and not any real attachment to the character. If maleshep was done buy the guy who does Cole's voice in Gears, I would be maleshep every time rergardless of how serious the situation he might be facing is.

If I can be female in the game, I will be female the game. I'm happy they brought up the option, though I didn't mind playing male protagonists in previous games or even games now. I'm a girly and I have a thing for girlies, so it works out. VA has nothing to do with who I pick to play. Although I do prefer Hales's VA a lot more overall.

I made a manshep and deleted him after 30 minutes of that awful voice; I'll never make another one again.

Same. Except for ME3 I might do a male playthrough to explore the homosexual romances.

I am a female and prefer to play female characters. I like Jennifer Hale's acting more so than Mark Meers simply because she is a woman. She makes Female Shepard sound strong, assertive and knowledgeable. I enjoy this aspect and prefer it to Male Shepard.

I'm a female so when I can I play females in games. I like Hale's va, but it doesn't have anything to do with why I play more femsheps then dudesheps. plus, it's hard for me to make a decent custom male, I can't use sheploo because he looks too much like someone I know. lol

I prefer the femshep voice; it fits the character I imagine. Meer's voice isn't bad..but it doesn't really fit. It never clicked for me no matter how many times I played; I have more femsheps than male sheps. Voice work in the new Deus Ex took a while to get used to; but it grew on me over the game. Not so much with Meer's shep.

No, I don't think either of them are better than the other. I chose the Shepard I want to play based mainly on romance options(since they're really the only difference between being a male and female in game). Which normally leads to playing a male since all the female options are lame(minus Liara)

Though if Jack is a bi option in ME3, I can see myself playing female Shepard more.

Hugely.

The reason I started playing Mass Effect in the first place is because I heard a rumor that it

(1) Is a new Sci-Fi RPG made by BioWare;

(2) Has a female (by your choice) protagonist voiced by Jennifer Hale.

Dat voice is the secks. I never tire of it, even after all these years and countless titles.
