I'm female, but I've always played as male Shepard. I made one female Shepard in ME1 but deleted her soon after starting the save file. Hale's voice didn't match my avatar at all. Far too gruff. I found Meer's voice to be much more universal sounding. The only game I've really wanted to play as a female character was DA2. I like FemHawke's voice better than MaleHawke because his voice sounds too old for my character.

It might be worth mentioning that I usually always play as male characters in RPGs. Hair style, facial feature construction, and other character creation option factor into my choice as well. There are few options to make a decent looking avatar, but even fewer for female characters in most games.

And I like RPing. Makes things more fun, opens up new perspectives and other such things.

And it stops you from getting hit on by every male in the universe when you play MMOs!

Sorry, I am really not contributing to thsi thread at all am I?

If you've got a minute, please post to tell me if the voice acting has effected whether you play as a man or woman, and why.

I generally play as female characters whenever I can. I enjoy the sound of female voices over male voices, especially one I have to listen to literally the entire game.

Not really. If there is the choice of a female protaganist, I'll always play the female PC and she'll always be the canon char. Usually I'll test the waters with a guy but for ME, I did not take to the guy so he became an after thought after I was thoroughly through with playing the female PC. Image IPB Of course, I'm always happy if the VA for the female chars did an excellent job.

That's true! I don't go on Playstation Home much anymore. Too many random weirdos started sending me friend requests.

I usually play as a female first because fallout 2 conditioned me to believe it to be easier(there's a scene where you can sleep with a guy for discount on the car and even when i beat fallout 2 i didn't have enough credits to have purchased it without the discount). I also usually do a play through with both a male and female character although I do prefer Jennifer's voice actor and made more female characters than male. Also I am a male.

As a female, I will always play a female character first when given the opportunity.

After a few PTs I usually make a couple of male characters to experience the story from a different POW.

If the story is solid, VA will not impact my decision of which gender I play.

No. In games where I am given the option to choose the gender of my player character, I always choose my own (male). Voice acting never plays a role for me. Granted, I have played femShep, but not once have I ever thought "Oh, I don't like how he/she sounds; I'll choose the character with the better voice". Personally I find both VAs satisfactory.

Yeah, I go with male Shepard more frequently in large part because I prefer Meer. They're both great though.

It does affect my choice, yes. I choose to play primarily as male Shepard because I adore his voice acting. I find that the female voice actor's work is sometimes a little...not to my taste. However, I did play my first time as a female Shepard because she was the same gender as I am, and had no problems with her at all. Actually, I played exclusively as female Shepard for my first three runs.

In fact, I think the reason that I started playing male Shepard more often at all was due to the incredibly vicious personal attacks that many "feminists" levied against his voce actor, Mark Meer. I started playing as him more because I wanted to see just what he had done that was so terrible. And as I explored more of the dialog options in the games, I found I really, really liked the job he had done.

Ironically, I find myself now unable to stand playing as a female Shepard for any lengths of time due to her character being associated with the behavior of a certain faction of her fan club.

Not really, there are a lot of factors that go into what gender my character is. I've generally liked both male and female voices for all BioWare PC's so far as well.

I am starting to wonder if it's the inflections we are reacting to? I don't play femShep because the VA'ing jars me and you obviously have the same issue though with manShep...Does anyone think we may be most drawn to what gels best with our own personalities?...Just a thought.

I actually enjoy playing as females in a lot of Bioware games, but FemShep's voice.....oh my god. It is so annoying.

I prefer Meer's voice over Hale's.

I also did not like how Femshep presented herself to Jacob. I thought the options were really trailer trashy and drunken prom date rolled into one. I wrote it off to the dude in me just saying 'oh, heck no I cannot do this.' For that runthrough I basically kept to myself to avoiid any interactions beyond the missions, loyalty missions, etc.

Owl, I think that may have something to do with it actually... well at least for some of us. I sort of am drawn to femshep's strong, authoritative voice (aggressive as some might call it... though paragon femshep sounds quite compassionate to me actually... her voice is very gentle and caring during paragon lines).

I'm a damn mouse in real life, my voice is basically a pathetic shy-sounding little squeeking noise that even I can't stand and people just laugh if I get angry or shout or try to sound assertive in any way.. I just sound absurd when I do. So for me, to hear a storng female voice like Hale's is wonderful.... wish fullfillment or something I guess, perhaps it's just me wishing I could sound as confident and strong as her.

I dunno, I'm just woolgathering here.

I don't know about that.. I found that in my time of dabbling with MMO's, people just assumed that I was male.  generaly, unless you go out of your way to advertise your gender, people rarely bug your characters.  it happens but not nearly as often as some would claim.  voice chat is a different story though  (nothing quite like calling out a boss ability or asking a question about a fight mechanic and suddenly people forget there's a boss to kill and go into "omg, a girl"  mode >_> )

It helps that Shepard is in full combat gear and has a grenade launcher strapped to her back. Not saying you should do that...please dont do that...I just started my first ME2 run with a femshep. While I like Hale quite a bit so far I've found her to have very different approach to some of the lines that I usually pick.

I'm so use to hearing Meer's voice say a line a certain way with emphasis on a certain word or with a certain tone that when Hale speaks it differently I get a Image IPB look and it takes me out of the game for the moment.

Naw I had the same amount of Malesheps and Femsheps in ME1, and I continued all the games into ME2. I have one canon Maleshep and one canon Femshep.

But I do think that the Maleshep voice is more universal by far. The Femshep voice just don't fit some of my created Shepards.

Kind of off topic, but I'm impressed with this thread so far. Was waiting for this to degrade to a manshep v femshep debate quick, but this has been a refreshingly polite and an interesting read on peoples point of views.

I don't mean to be all moderatory (add that to the dictionary, tyvm), but what can i say? My expectations for these forums is typically low. Hope I haven't jinxed it.

That's quite interesting actually....as a woman, I have a voice that can go 'Boom' when I have the need, though my preference is very much more towards not having to raise my voice...I hate having to go the 'Boom' moments...much preferring to remain soft spoken myself....Correlation maybe...hmmm...

I play both.
The voice acting doesn't really influence what gender I play (it probably would be different if I thought Meer's voice acting as terrible as some do but I really don't mind it much even though I do prefer Hale's a bit) but more what kind of Shepard I play. (Like I end up using FemShep for characters leaning more towards 'badass' while ManShep is my to go to guy for 'too many issues to count'...)
So the only time voiceacting would actually influence my gender choice would be when I have a specific character planned out before...
