I personally tend to go with male for my renegade playthroughs and femshep for the more paragon.

Is that me subconsciously saying I expect women to be purer than men I don't know. I always just kind of thought that the male voice suited a more dominant and aggressive character as opposed to the female game voice being more virtuous and confident of ability

I have to say it hasn't , tho it's purely because like others have said, it's nice to be able to play that role as my own gender, and that takes priority.

I think Jeniffer does an amazing performance... (with the huge exception of talking to Jacob! I am thankful he is such a closed character that I can't entertain the idea romancing him again. Whole exchange makes me cringe. Although, I do really like Jacob's VA, and so I still have a desire to talk to him... very frustrating *grin*. Whoever directed Hale in that recording session needs re-purposing :innocent:).

But now I have done the romances and the character and class choices I want, I am playing a maleshep, mostly cos I am curious about romancing Jack and the experience of maleshep. ME1 was ... underwhelming* as far as Meers VA goes. Just a lack of emotion mostly I think. Only just started ME2 soooo hard to say .. but so far I feel more involved in my character than ME1. I am very early into the campaign tho soooooo.

I study linguistics and communication and might be regarded as feminist, depending on who you ask :), so I'd be interested in a link to your essays. :)

* Actually, underwhelming doesn't cover it. I was somewhat amazed that this character could be so loved with such a bland voice at first. But at least part of that has to be familiarity with Hale's voice. It hasn't been grating by any means, but it is not doing anything to tempt me to play more Malesheps. Only the Romance/male playthrough possible experience is doing that.

Have fun :)

I tend to stick to playing my own gender (male) though I usually will play through once in order to see what differences if any exist.

That said, honestly, I like Mark Meer's performance a touch more than Jennifer Hale's. It's mainly in the fact that Meer's Shepard is so steady (some call it monotone, I call it reserved) in his delivery. One, it matches my idea of a soldier a little better, in the sense that a marine is trained in how many different ways of killing you? They'd better have the ability to control and restrain their emotions, and two, it doesn't lead to wild shifts in performance for the differing paths, paragon and renegade. The dialogue all hovers around the same area in delivery no matter which way you're going with Meer, but Hale's dialogue goes soft and gentle for paragon and then raging b*tch for renegade, and the wild vocal shift is a little off-putting for me.

My canon is male, but I enjoy the femsheps voice too. In my opinion Mark does a great job as male Shepard because typically men do not show emotion in their voice often, but when he does its at the times when men would. For Jennifer I think she does a great job for female Shepard as women tend to show more emotion in there voices. So I think Mark is great for male and Jennifer is great for female.

I'm working on a series of essays about feminist issues in videogames, and there's going to be a couple pieces on the Mass Effect series.  One thing I'd like to discuss is how the voice acting of Jennifer Hale and Mark Meer has effect players' choice of gender.  If you've got a minute, please post to tell me if the voice acting has effected whether you play as a man or woman, and why.

Please don't let this degenerate into an argument over which actor is better - feel free to express your opinion in your post, but don't post just to argue.

Yes. Jennifer Hale has her good moments in the game, but too often she sounds to me like she's trying to sound like a man, and that puts me off playing as Femshep.

A woman doesn't need to talk in gruff tones to come off as a badass. IMO Ash is a good example of a badass girl done right; she doesn't chew gravel but I still wouldn't wanna mess with her.

Yep quite the opposite though, the voice kept me from playing female. I know hale is fully capable so I blame the directing and writing, the low gruff voice is also too far from her natural voice and sounds really affected at times.

The voice acting not so much, they were both believable and like-able (save for a few scenes, skankzilla with Jacob) but I think the major deciding factor for why I chose femshep first was because I would rather see female butt wagging around for 30+ hours then mansheps...that and female heroes are few and far between.

Nope I'm a guy so I play as a guy, but If I have to play as a chick I will without complaint. I just like to picture myself as Shep.

I don't think either Hale or Meer is really better then the other. They're both excellent VAs for what it's worth.

I prefer playing as a male character myself as it's much easier for me to play from the mindset of a guy, being a guy myself.  Also I tend not to really notice Meer's Canadian accent much myself. So what aboot it?

I have been a Canadian for 18 years and not once have I heard someone say "aboot". NOBODY. Are these Canadian stereotypes, or just Newfies?

Interestingly enough, of the hundreds of stereotypes I've heard, only one rings perfectly true. "Eh". I know alot of people that say it, just not after every sentence.

I've only played as FemShep, and I chose to do so since I'm female. It's easier in these types of games to play as your own gender, IMO, so you can connect to it better.

Edit:

The only common thing I hear amongst almost all Canadians is the word "again" pronounced not "ah-gen" like most people, but "ah-gain" with the sharp A sound.
I've also known a few Canadians who pronounce Mario, Pasta, and Garage. among other words, with that sharp A sound. Haven't noticed it yet in ME however.

I don't know many canadians personally, but just within Mass Effect 2, it's quite obvious many humans and aliens alike  say oot and aboot.

I'm American and I've never really noticed it either. Of course, now that I know to listen for it, I bet I'll never be able to ignore it again.

I prefer male Shepard. He sounds a bit more "military" than female Shepard does.

I Lived in New England for about 10 years of my life, 4 years a block away from the Canadian border. During my time there I did notice that Canadian and Americans have different sounding accents. I even picked up on some of the Canadian accent myself.

Well... as a woman, I can relate more to Femshep :)

However I did give Maleshep a chance... I carefully built my 2nd one, and I really do like Meer's acting... doing a ME1 run and from playing malshep in ME2 I know he gets better

I think its all about preference really ^_______^

I just really like strong female heroes. The fact that I've been fan of Jennifer Hale's voice acting since Star Wars: KOTOR was just icing on the cake.
