Voice acting played no part in creating any of my Shepards (all of which are male). I just find it easier to relate and to play as a male character

I second this.

I tried to play a fem-shep character once. Just didn't feel right. I feel more immersed in the game when playing with a man-shep.

I've always enjoyed Meer's voice acting, but honestly, I just play male because I am male. I was never compelled to play a female shepard. It doesn't do anything for me.

Played no part for me. I don't find either of them particularly compelling.

Practically the opposite.  Started out playing ME as a male Shepard because most games seem male orientated... this was years ago, mind you.  I went back to play a bit of ME2 a couple of days ago, and decided to give Fem-Shep a shot.  SOOOOOO much better!  I'm sure it's not 100% the voice acting, but I definately feel that that is part of it, and I've seen/heard a lot of people leaning towards that same reasoning on the internets.  She's just so BA ^_^
*sigh*  Now I have to go back through ME1 as Fem-Shep... so awesome yet tedious.

Jennifer Hale overacts. Sounds better as Renegade/Paragade.
Mark Meer underacts. Sounds better as Paragon/Renagon.

My two cents anyway.

I cannot perceive any difference in quality between either voice actor. Being male, I primarily play as Male Shepard because I often think "what would I do?" when playing video games.

Can you post a link to where we might be able to find the finished article? I assume this is for a blog or some other type of digital publication, feel free to correct me on this.

Nope. My main shep is a male because I am and I play femshep because I want to. The fact that Jennifer Hale voices her played no part in me doing that.

I like playing as male or female as the 'in world' experience varies.
For ME though, it is primarily female, and that is due, in very large part, to Jennifer Hale's excellent voice acting. She is my definitive Shepard.

I enjoy Meer and Hale equally.

Voice acting doesn't play a part in when I pick a gender in a video game. I never play as one gender in games, I always play both because hey, it's more interesting. However, my canon character in ME is FemShep. It really depends on the type of game that makes me think of what playthrough is canon, not the gender.

No, the voice actor has no effect on which gender I play.

I thought Hale did a better job in ME1, but I thought they both did a good job in ME2.

When given the choice, I'll always choose a female protagonist, and if I can't it's unlikely I'll buy the game actually.

However, with games with a high replay value I'll always have a walkthrough with a man as well. Except Mass Effect. I just can't get past the first 20-30 minutes before I start missing Jennifer's voice and my annoyance with Mark Meer's gets the upperhand.

It's actually a shame, because I'd really like to romance Ashley, Jack and/or Miranda to see how those relationships pan out, but I just can't stand the man's monotone intonation (yay for oxymorons). I can't say he's 'bad' - but his style just makes me cringe a ten times over.

That, plus the fact Hale simply NAILS most of the dialogue (with an exception here and there, *yes* I'm looking at you, Overlord DLC) simply keeps me locked on femshep.

--- In contrast, DA2's male VA was excellent and I loved going through the game with him.

I was actually avoiding male playthrough because of Mark Meer´s voice acting. From the glimpses I had, it seemed very flat and shallow. I made several female playthroughs when I decided to give it a go. At first it was as I expected, but as I continued I got accustomed to it and I realized that Mark´s calm, almost cynical acting is actually really great. It makes brilliant strong Shepard, while Jennifer is more passionate. So now I love them both equally. I also realized that I tend to feel more protective towards male Shepard. Strange :)

I don't know if this is relevant or what you can get from it, but I find it easier to play male in ME and DA2 because of the voicing. Whereas playing female is always simply easy and natural feeling. So I've never really played any male characters in DAO or KotOR (have a few guys in BG though, I seemed to have an easier time with the gender barrier when I was younger.. somehow).

I pick who I want to play (male 99,99% of the time..I don't recall if I ever even finshed a female plytrough of any game)

Voice does not factor into it.

At the start of the game you choose sex, not gender.

On renegade, MaleShep sounds like a pompous jackass while FemShep like a psychopath.
When I want to play a jerk, I go for MaleShep. When I feel like going on a killing spree I choose FemShep.
Anyway, I like both voice actors and always play as both genders, thought my first is always FemShep for each new game and second is MaleShep.

They have distinct meanings.

Sex

Gender

Semantic change is awful.

Imho he's too flat in many of the key dialogues. But I've also heard enough clips of Meer to know that the problem isn't Meer but the director.
Maleshep's geared towards the stereotypical glib action hero space marine. The kind of people who want that probably are never gonna play as femshep so Hale's got a lot more freedom in terms of acting.

I play mostly femshep and voice acting plays a big part of it. While I agree that they both do certain things well (Meer makes a better bad@ss) and certain things not so well (Hale really butchers it when she tries too hard to sound tough), femshep has a certain vulnerability that I find more interesting.

Meer is an amazing VA but I choose to play as male Shep because as a guy it feels hard to be immersed in a story and put my personality into a character while playing a female character.
