not really.
but if i did pick based off voice acting i'd still play male shep. he's more consistent line to line. hale is all over the place, monotone one line then overacting the next line then back to monotone. its SUPER immersion breaking. how anyone can prefer that i have no idea.

Voice acting doesn't influence gender choice for me. I pick maleshep because I'm a male.

Yeah I preffer maleShep and my bro always plays femaleShep,
I like how Mark says things that I want Shepard to say in conversation choices.

Right. There's several factors that go into who I choose gender-wise, but usually Voice-Acting isn't it. I thought Hale was far superior in ME1, but Meer is better in ME2.

If anything, the choices I receive from playing both genders is what determines what I play. Since I can bop Garrus as a female, then bam- female it is.

Exactly, it's easy to get into character if the gender is the same as your own. Even if you don't go all the with the roleplaying, it's still nice to feel somewhat more involved with the game and characters.

Being male, I initially chose femshep just for the sake of variety as nearly every other game has a male protagonist. After four playthroughs however, I can definitely say that the voice acting is a large part of the reason why I have yet to finish a playthrough with male shep.

Yes it has. In the era of non voiced protagonists I would play both, but Jennifer Hale is so good she made me want to play Femshep exclusively.

I perfer playing as femshep. mostly because it feels like dudeshep's lines are read directly from a piece of paper while femshep's lines actually seem believable.

Nope, but for some reason I like to roleplay as women more...probably 7 out of 10 of my characters are female.

I'm a male and I play as a male given the option. *shrugs* As for the voice acting, both have their strengths but I actually think tonal neutrality is preferable in role-playing, so that I don't feel as ifthe part is being played for me by an actor. From what I see that's a rather unique stance though.
I suppose if women started making sense then perhaps I'd consider the alternative.

I must say it kinda' intrigued me.... I'm a male and I always played male characters in all my RPGs except KOTOR... this whole hype about femShep and Jennifer Hale got me interested in the difference people say exists between Hale's voice acting and Meer's voice acting.. combine that with the new FemShep default and... yeah I was influenced somewhat

I generally pick male as I am male. There has been games, can't remember which that are gender based(female). Like a certain character must do a certain thing. For that purpose I will go female for a playthrough.

Depending on certain games though or the characters attributes my change me decision. Dead Island for example.

I think both of them make a great job I don't share thar preferece with Hale over Mee.

As I say both make agreat job so for me there is no influence, the only influence would be if one of them was mediocre or worse (that happened with me in DA2, were a prefered femHake)

No. I chose to play as a female because if I'm given a choice I almost always choose to do so. A female protagonist is still unusual even in this day and age. When I saw the box for ME I wasn't even aware that there was a choice in genders.

I've also played as male Shepard, because ME is so replayable and I wanted to know if the experience would be different (it was). I enjoyed both. The voice actors both bring something different to the table.

I have never tried a game based on who the voice actors are, but I always hope they are good. A bad VO can ruin an otherwise good game, male or female.

Both are great voices for different reasons. I find male shepherd much funnier and a wise guy in some situations. Fem shepherd can stir emotions with such passionate delivery of lines. When she gives those motivational speeches I find them far more moving than the male version.

No. I keep hearing that Jennifer Hale is a better voice actor than Mark Meer, and that may be true. I really wouldn't know. I instinctively make my characters male since I'm a male. Mark Meer's voice acting leaves much to be desired in some situations, but that's not enough to make me play a female character. Just not my thing. If given the choice of gender, I always play as a male character.

And a friendly word of advice: if you're using this as a "source" for your essays, you probably should have more sources than just forums. Just saying.

Couldn't have said it better myself. :)

In Mass Effect 1, I think Hale is so far superior to Meer that I prefer playing as femshep.

In ME2, I think they're about equal (Meer having improved, not because of Hale getting worse) so I usually go for a male Shepard because of animation issues.

Romance plays a bigger factor for me. With that said I have an equal amount of males and females and enjoy both voice actors equally.

DA is a different matter, but that is neither here nor there.

i generally play as a male, as i'm male, but i decided to go through a playthrough as a female and i can say that i didn't enjoy the female VA and won't be doing another female playthrough as a result of trying it out...
