Let me begin by saying that I'm a woman. I choose to play female characters because I feel very disconnected when I play male characters. It has nothing to do with voice actors, though I think Hale does an amazing job, Meer does a great job as well. There are certain lines I personally feel here and there that one actor did a better job on than the other but over all I think both actors do and equally excellent job with Shepard.
I can tell you why I like Hale's performance though. I love her ability to convey strength and capability with the tone of her voice and I believe she did a terrific job with the motivation speeches in both the first and second game (before the big confrontations and such). She sounds believably tough, without going overboard. I can only think of two situations where I didn't like her performance and in both situations it was because the tone of her voice came across as too sexy. In fact I avoid conversations with Jacob often because I dislike the way Shepard speaks to him. But in other situations where "sexy voice" is appropriate, I think she does a great job.
I'm not sure if that is what you were looking for but there you go.

I play both.

While in general I like Hale's VA work I find her FemShep to be a bit...underwhelming.

Meer is bland as ManShep but he's great in other roles.

I think it's more that Shepard is...kinda dull as a character.

I made my shepard to reflect me so he is male, so I have to suffer Meer's voice work. I do recognize that His voice pales in comparison to Hales but he is my "canon" shepard. Feel free to flame.

Bah, all the hype around Jennifer Hale almost made me hate her :D
But I now have one more Femshep playthrough than maleShep ones =) I still play for variety though, so I don´t really play for a particular voice actor, I actually like them both.
And I really do find Mark Meer´s acting okay ^^

I like to play maleshep because I am a male and I like Meer's voice- I think him being more stoic makes him stronger.

Uh.. yeah... Men grate on my ears, every time, but women's voices are so much smoother and easier to listen. Yes, even voices like Cindy Fox, she's known for high pitched characters, sound easier on my ears than male voices.

I'm working on a series of essays about feminist issues in videogames, and there's going to be a couple pieces on the Mass Effect series.  One thing I'd like to discuss is how the voice acting of Jennifer Hale and Mark Meer has effect players' choice of gender.  If you've got a minute, please post to tell me if the voice acting has effected whether you play as a man or woman, and why.

Please don't let this degenerate into an argument over which actor is better - feel free to express your opinion in your post, but don't post just to argue.

VA has never influenced my choice of avatar gender - played and enjoyed aspects of both.

The voice acting has nothing to do with the gender of characters I play in ME or any other game. I am female, but tend to connect more with playing male characters, and find playing female characters kind of blah and boring with some exceptions. Maybe because I play one all day in real life and so it's more fun to play male characters. No having to put up with all the female crap. :)

Nevertheless, I do tend to balance out the genders of my characters and end up having a mixture of both. I also happened to like both the male Shep and female Shep voices and have never before heard of either actor. Don't know why people think the female Shep sounds more emotional though. She sounds pretty matter-of-fact and dangerous to me, like no one better mess with her.

No, I'd say not.  I came to ME through a recommendation from someone I know online on another game site.  I'd only seen the advertising material for ME for up till then and thought the protagonist was male.  I was bloody delighted to find out you could play as a female Shep.  I've never played a male Shep - well, I tried once but I couldn't get on with it and never got beyond Eden Prime.  Jennifer Hale's VA is just the icing on the top.  I think she's just great.

Same. I am a woman so went Femshep. But when I tried to play a maleshep to see the differences and stuff... I have to say I didn't last long. I prefer Jennifer Hale a whole lot. But I am not saying Mark Meer is bad though. It's like asking me if I like milk chocolate or dark chocolate. I love both but I prefer dark ;D

I'm unsure, I really don't care about the Voice Action part. I usually play female in games, as wellmale usually female. It also depending on the games as well, most won't let you play make or female. I'm okay with it, use too it. I love The Mass Effect Series that acting is wondeful, the characters, story and gameplay. Oh I too only okay games that look interesting, good and that I'm interested in.

Voice acting had nothing to do with it. I picked femshep cause I am female and prefer playing female characters in general. Most of the games I play is because there is an option to play female or you can only play female.

I will sacrifice this preference if the game is good enough of course, I just know I'm more interested when the choice to play female is available.

Only if a character could have breast or not, voice does not matter.
