Background:

In Dragon Age, you can play the Arcane Warrior specialization ONLY if you start as a Mage. The nice thing about this specialization, is you can use Magic as the Strength requirement for weapons and armor. This means you can SORT OF have a sword wielding Mage.

Unfortunately, with the default Arcane Warrior, since you start as a Mage, you cannot build any Warrior or Rouge skills. This means your character never excels at sword play, and must mainly rely on magic skills.

Description:

You become a Arcane Warrior with unique ability to use Warrior or Rouge skills in addition to magic.

With this mod, Skills, Talents, Spells, etc from the Awakening Expansion are available in Origins!

The following image is of an Arcane Warrior Rogue character.

You can see Dual Weapon, Magic, and Arcane Warrior skills available in the quickslots.

This mod opens up a new underground area built by ancient elves prior to the dawn of human civilization and before Arcane Warriors became lost to the world. In this ancient catacomb are the lost secrets of the Arcane Warrior, along with various custom items specially designed for the Arcane Warrior, and other valuable items.

Note: In this mod, when you or your companions all unconscious or "die", they will suffer serious permanent loss of strength and constitution and be removed from your party. The disabled companion will be dressed in simple clothing and their weapons and armor will be returned to inventory. The injured member may rejoin the party, but they will have a lot of making up to do to make up for their weaknesses suffered.

In addition to many new weapons, armor, and other items (including Tome of Unlearning from Awakening), I have added 4 party chests to the Camp area for storing and organizing items you don't want to carry with you:

How it works:

After installation, you will see new installed content available:

Posted Image

Start a new game in the usual manner, selecting either a Human Noble, Dalish Elf or City Elf.

Note: This mod deliberately excludes Mage and Dwarf characters from access to the underground area because Dwarfs are not supposed to use magic, and Mages do not start with the Rogue or Warrior talents required.

It is IMPORTANT to access the underground at the very beginning of the game prior to traveling to Ostagar with Duncan. The reason for this, is because it's best becoming an Arcane Warrior as early as possible so you can build your Mage skills. The underground area will remain available via the Worldmap so you can return (you will want to) later in the game.

Each gamestart (Human Noble, City Elf, Dalish Elf) will access the underground from different locations:

Human Noble gamestart:

Access is through a trap-door in the Cousland library.

Posted Image

Note: You MUST access the underground PRIOR to going up the ramp to your bedroom area. You won't have access (except via the WorldMap) if you wait until after the attack on the castle.

City Elf:

You start in your house (as normal). You will notice (if you've played this gamestart before) I have added a chest with some basic low-level weapons and armor because this character normally starts without them, and you will definitely need everything you can get your hands on to survive the underground.

Posted Image

You will notice a trapdoor in the corner of your room. This leads to an area of the Alienage behind your house that is inaccessible in the normal game:

Posted Image

I you look very carefully, you will discover a trapdoor submerged in the water leading to the underground area.

Dalish Elf:

In the Ruins, you will find a magic mirror leading to the underground area.

Posted Image

Note: This is not the standard plot magic mirror which is still down the hallway further into the ruins.

Underground Area:

This new (for Origins) area is fairly large and there are several things you must (you want to) find. In addition, there are some serious nasties down here. Here are a few points to keep in mind that will help you.

One of the first things you'll want to do in the underground area is find the treasure pile on the floor of one of the rooms. Here you'll find a key required for opening the Arcane Warrior sarcophagus:

(notice the monster from Awakening being used here in Origins)

Posted Image

After you get the key, and open the sarcophagus (in a different room), you will see the message "You are now an Arcane Warrior". Several new spells and talents (some from Awakening) will be present in your quickslots. Which ones will depend on if you are a Rogue or a Warrior.

Posted Image

Note: Once you became an Arcane Warrior, you will not have access to Rogue or Warrior skills except for those present in your quickslots. Be careful you don't remove non-Mage icons from your quickslots because you won't be able to get them back. In effect, you are a Mage class with non-mage attributes added.

Most of the items in the sarcophagus are specific to the Arcane Warrior and cannot be used by any other class. Some of these items you won't be able to outfit until you gain the necessary physical strength and dexterity.

At this point, it may be wise to leave the underground and come back later after you are more powerful to look for the other valuable items that can be found here.

Arcane Warrior Chest: This chest requires a key found in earlier in the sarcophagus. You will gain additional powers along with a host of valuable items and a key to another chest when you open this chest.

Posted Image

The key you found in the previous chest will open this one:

Posted Image

In it, you will find some very valuable equipment with which to outfit your party in addition to yourself.

World Map:

Once you are able to access the World Map (after Lothering), the undergound (Lost City) area will be accessible for fast-travel:

Installation:

1. Download the dazip file here (340 MB)

2. Open daupdater.exe in the "bin_ship" directory of your Dragon Age installation.

Posted Image

3. "Select DAZIP's" the file you downloaded (osr_arcane_warrior.dazip) and "Install Selected".

4. Enjoy!

Thanks pizzapicante!

Making this mod available for download is just kind of an after-thought. As with many of us, I made this for my own use and it evolved over time. Basically I wanted to tie up various loose ends and learn how to create distributable mods for this game.

It's not perfect by any means, but I've enjoyed the RPG aspect of being a dual-weapon character AND a Mage at the same time. All the better if someone else enjoys it at some future time. :)

this sounds very ineresting to check out. but got one question: is the class mana or stamina based.

I'm working on my own very big mod where in I also want to make a class that more allround than just mage , rogue or warrior. more towards like oblivion kinda class build.

Hi soulsensei,

This character is mana based because while you start out as either a Warrior or a Rogue, when you open the sarcophagus you do become a Mage (plus some of the other classes). Therefore, as you level-up, you add magic spells as Mage's do.

Admittedly, this is not a "true" new class. I tried doing that along time ago (even wrote a tutorial), but is was fraught with bugs (mine, game and toolset). The way I'm doing it here is simply how it evolved for me while enjoying the game.

At time of conversion (sarcophagus), depending on starting class, I give the player a range of the best (to me) talents (Rogue or Warrior), and put them in quickslots. After that, they evolve as Mage.

It's a bit of a hack, but it works well enough for my purposes, and possibly for other players too.:)

I understand. i've not yet explored making a new class. but did some reading on it.
I can see already in it that it will take some time to do it right. you need to make excel files and all. planned the class well out aswell the skills. my plans for a new class in my own mod. are more drastic than this idea. but still i like the way thinking about the arcane warrior.

I don't have this particular mod but there are several decent arcane warrior mods at the nexus that will give you the warrior talents.
