The funny thing is all we've heard so far appears to indicate the exact opposite of the OP is trying to convey. I'm not really sure there will be any face-shoving work, because it's been stated so many times that no one is "permanent" this time around. That is to say that the squadmate mechanics won't work the same way as they did in ME1 and ME2, which naturally implies a fundamental difference lying therein.

Well we'll just have to see & hope for the best.

Crossing fingers might help... Or we can just enjoy the game for what it is... fun?

You can't go wrong either way.

The thing is: I wonder if the player actually can choose who's being his "permanent" squadmate.

Lets say you have 6 vacancies, you just can pick 6 squadmates at any given time. You pick up Miranda at some point but later in game you decide you'd like to pick Thane instead. So you can tell Miranda "great job done, but need you to leave for a while so I can pick up Thane" - and she's gone until you pick her up again.

Actually, I'd like to see something like that. In my case I'd keep Ashley in my team as permanent member and would try out any other charachters  if possible. However, ME3 won't give us this feature I fear.

My take is that it's going to be a mix of virmire and SM. Everyone is kill-able. As had been said before its possible to achieve endgame with the reapers being the victors. But i'm going to assume here that we will be given some pretty tough choices before this: save an entire race and/or war asset to the condemnation of a particular character (particularly if you somehow made an option difficult during ME1/2 play-throughs ie handing over geth data, deleting genophage cure, etc).

Similar to the battle of the citadel moment where you had to decide between saving the council or preventing human casualties. Only these moments are going to feel more emotionally charged. Since instead of nameless casualties its actual characters with faces and personalities who are in danger. IF this was the case, then I hope that there's no super suave blue dialogue that's going to save everyone and actually allow Shepard to make some tough decisions.

ME3 is also going to have a "perfect" ending (for the players who did everything right, or i guess, as bioware intended) by this I'm assuming a bunnies and fluffies reward ending, where everyone makes it through unscathed. So maybe, just maybe its possible to save everyone.

Who knows, time will tell.

I think it should work that way but the potentially *wasted* dialogue would be immense, right? :o

Sure it is.

Maybe in a ME-series reboot. Once it's no longer interesting if you make a game 40GB or 400GB in size *g*

I'm hurt, twist the knife a bit more would you >.<

*edit, As for the squad thing, remember that they said things would be changing around shepard all the time, and at no moment are we allowed a sense of peace or security.

It could be a possible hint that there is no actual permanent squad (what passes for permanent squad in ME3 could just be the characters with the most screen time). We can expect a situation where people will be off doing their own thing in the galaxy to help shepard, maybe scouting or gathering resources, w/e. But people will be moving in and out of the Normandy all the time. Its not like the 1st 2 games where you were tasked with bringing saren down, or capturing the collector base. It's going to be a war and it's difficult to imagine the nessicity of an individual independent squad. All returning characters have major roles to play and they won' be able to carry them out if they are stuck under shepards shadow all the time.

**edit, is there no spell checker or something...

I would think it's no more immense than that wasted if you ignore Wrex/Garrus in ME1, choose not to recruit Samara/Thane/Tali/Grunt/Legion in ME2, etc.

BioWare has a history of including entirely optional content in their games, and to a pretty ridiculous degree. Wouldn't be the first time they've done something not everyone is going to see.

Was it confirmed somewhere that a squad-member will die?

Meh as long as no squad-mates are "overshadowed" by others, the concept of screen time equality is not going to be an issue for me. Besides you can generally compensate for any deliberate character foregrounding; e.g. Miranda kept interjecting during the suicide mission = she got to sit quietly in the corner for the duration. Tali and Garrus had fewer dialogue trees = they came on a larger number of missions. It's all up to your own preferences in this regard.

Should be worrying about the quality of time spent rather than the quantity anyway.

Yeah, I know :) And I agree.... but I was referring to very large cast really..... I mean 6 from ME and then ALL of the others from 2 it would be bigger than anything before, iyswim?
But I think it would be cool.... it would add so much to the replay value, because of the stuff you haven't seen and want to see :)

No matter what they do regarding returning squad mates, some people will complain.

This is fact and I have spoken it.

Dpending on if Garrus and Tali died in ME2. we may be looking at only three permanent teammates on the Normandy and at least one of the three (VS, Vega, Liara) will die and I'm guessing that it's Vega. In other words, we're getting the ME1 LI's shoved in our face agaisnt our will and may only have two after the first half of the game with an occasional character popping up for part of a missionn who's most likely to die at the end of it. This is beyond lame.

loool people compain about everything here.

This guy is mad we're getting some of our squad back, WTF?

Honestly? I know it's likely futile, but I hope Vega is a redshirt who dies early. We've had too bloody many human squadmates already; seven total by this point, plus the all-human ship crew. It's getting redundant and irritating, and I don't like the idea of having new squadmates much to begin with.

They're all different species. It's not precisely, or even remotely, the same thing.

I find it hard to take the OP seriously. The LI from ME1 isn't being shoved in our face. They are bringing back squadmates from both ME1 and ME2. If you killed off Garrus and Tali then you don't have them in your ME3 game. Liara is a fan favorite so she will be brought back. Ash/Kaidan whomever survived virmire will be back. It's a conclusion to a trilogy. They are trying to wrap up storylines for all characters from both ME1 and ME2.

Deal with it.

Some of the humans squadmates are from different ethnicities and all of them have different values and morals.
You're acting as if "seen one human, seen them all."

yes but the 9 aliens are

1 awesomesauce Turian
1 bubbly quarian
2 butthurt krogan
1 emo drell
2 feisty asari
1 smexy salarian
and
1 fluffy geth
vs 7 dull, drab, boring and oh so common humans

I don't get your point, how can the scales ever balance.
