On topic: @Evewyn

Developers still get a lot of revenue when they release Ultimate Editions from people who come later in the game, but, typically I see UE's selling for $40-50 as opposed to the $65.xx first day + $xx per DLC. So, effectively, they lose maybe $30-40 from people who just wait until they get the game with everything on it. In the end, less money and perhaps a message if they want to see it that way.

Thanks for the reply.  I was assuming pretty much this, but what I'm curious about is, what kind of message does waiting for an ultimate edition or a price drop really send to devs?  I mean, let's say everyone waits around, (and yes, I realize this scenario isn't likely) and doesn't get a game on release day, so I would assume that devs think, "Oh, people must not like this type of game, so therefore, there's no point in going any further to support it."  So then no dlc happens in the first place, and in the end no ultimate edition.  Am I right?

I guess what I'm wondering is, if you wanted to express your hatred for something like day-one dlc, would it send a stronger message to get a game and refuse all the dlc, or would it be more effective to refuse to buy anything until a much later time?

I realize that people could easily go onto the dev's forum and voice their hatred that way, but let's take that out of the equation for a moment.  I really am interested in what people think about this.

That's an interesting point! Ideally, I suppose the best way to send a message is if a lot of people boycotted first day release and are vocal about why they aren't buying the game right away -- because they believe the DLC should be part of the game and not paylocked. I'm sure that part of the work post-release is to scour the general opinion people have towards the game... and I'm sure the developers will receive word about fan discontent.  Especially, if a lot of people are saying how much they want to buy the game, but won't based on their ethical stance of what's going on.

If a developer chooses to ignore the feedback and assume that "the game just sucked"... well, I don't really feel bad for them.  In that case, they probably deserve to lose revenue, since there's no effort to connect with the players.  I'm not saying bend to their will, but the best business practice is to understand and deliver what the consumer wants to the best of your ability.

The more and more I see greedy stunts like this, the more I really start to hate the concept of DLC. If I love a game, I obviously wouldn't be opposed to having more added to it... but the practices of late regarding DLC, players constantly being forced to authenticate/restrict usage of products they have already bought, and the mentality that developers approach the possibility of DLC is disheartening.

As someone whose top priority is to make money, it's very appealing to realize that I don't have to necessarily make the best product right now... since I can always just milk the cow later.

If we support shoddy DLC or greedy business models... it's sending the message that we are "OK" with what they're doing.  But... what does that mean for the future?  How much will they paylock in future titles? Etc.

P.S. Wall o' Text.

TL;DR -- Capcom... don' do dat.

LOL

I liked that one.

You haven't played them so how would you know.

Where have you got this information from? LOL

Also about DD:

One character save slot? Meh. Bad decision.

I just finished the demo; it was really fun. Fighting that griffin is so hard at night. I ended up dying pretty quick because I couldn't see crap. The customization is pretty in-depth as well.

I just played the demo. The customization wasn't as extensive as I had thought/hoped. I however did end up coming up with two different looks for my main character and main pawn that I think looks really good, though not as good as I had hoped. Still, at least it has options that other character creators lack.

I noticed light/heavy do not consume stamina so that's a huge relief over thinking you had to wait for stamina to recover or use items in order to do any attacking.

Yeah, I was kind of disappointed that you couldn't change the shape of the head especially since that option looks like it could've been added easily. Other than that minor thing, the game was pretty fun. I just hope that the pawns you can hire have more personality than the one you create.

I don't think pawns are actually fully fleshed out characters. The charm is all in the player's ability to customize them from looks to specialization. Other than that, their dialogue just consists of "I'm here to help you, Arisen." "Watch out!" "I've fought this type of enemy before." etc. etc.

I wouldn't expect them to actually say anything unique or important.

Ugh I could tell from the demo they were going to get old very fast.  Constantly saying the same thing over and over is not cool.  I would turn them off and solo this game if it would let me.

If I remember correctly from thier blogs you can, but there are also specific quests triggered by your main pawn and there are story points that involve your main pawn. So yes, they're meant to have quite a bit of personality to them.

@ andriod, minus to the OXM review they don't. The game got a 6 from them. And they were very criticall on the Pawns being lack luster and lacking personality, being "there" rather than like a team member or companion like in most RPGs.

A few more reasons not to pre-order. I'll probably treat this the same way I treated ME3. Rent it then wait till it's in the bargain bin before I buy it.

blah you have no idea how much I hate red box for destroying all the rentals here. Only the video places had games as well. And I just don't trust gamefly, or rather anyone with my card number for an online rental. Really every purchase I make is a risk...oh well.

(Yes! I knew there was a DD thread here! :wizard:)

Anyway, after playing the demo, this seems to be my kind of game. I can't wait to throw things off a cliff (especially when the pawns start to become annoying). I don't have faith in the story or any of the characters being good story wise, but Skyrim also had that same problem (boring/uninteresting companions/npcs and lack luster stories) so that won't bother me much. Plus, I just want to climb stuff and throw people at dragons.

I mean, this game can't be any worse than Risen 2, right. Right?

Not them, just the nature of credit card databases. I use a debit, and if security is even a little shotty, some lillte butt munch can get into the system, get numbers, and poof.

I've actully had that happend once to me, and I've had family members thats happend to. Mind you I know all the rules in terms of Https and what not, and I generally when ordering, request the card not be kept on file. Crap happens. So I take steps to make sure I give as few chances as I can for it. So I order only when I have no choice at all via online or anything that deals with my debit. Shame really, but untill I see tighter punshiments and laws in reguards to account theft and hacking, well just how it has to be.

Minus that I don't think I'ld use gamefly anyways given questions I have with how its rentals work. Oh well.

Best Buy was good and old?
Their the biggest ripoffs out there.  Their biggest business is Geek Squad where they take advantage of niave people and overcharge them for simple things.  Seriously I feel dirty just walking in that palce.

But yeah best buy in my area has no rentals and prices that are nuts. As to Geek Squad...meh, in my area everyone over charges for PC repair work.

Are you kidding?

Anyway this on-disc-DLC has just put me off the game completely now. A shame since I really wanted to play this (and the Resident Evil 6 demo).

I may end up waiting 'till the end of the year to try this out as I'm just not inclined to pick this up straight away, which may turn as a good thing considering a fair amount of games due for this year are now delayed to '13.

Plus Dragon's Dogma: Arcade Edition is another reason to wait for the end of the year for it.

I will buy it pre order even though the story looks like crap. With the vastly superior combat, player animation and customization, I'm hoping it will hold me longer than Skyrim and it's poor writing did.
