Any tips for a magick archer?

I use dual daggers and a bow.

I use the six bolt ability, hunter bolt and light ball abilities.

My melee abilities are the jumping fire ability, the kisses abilities another one that I rarely use.

I want to unlock that fiery cloak ability.

I don't use staffs because I have a bow for ranged combat, and I want the versatility of ranged and melee combat.

My pawns are a mage, a fighter and a warrior.

MA is so boss you don't need to get overly technical... you'll be relying mostly on your bow anyway. I use ricochet, nine bolt (upgrade from six bolt), and the third doesn't matter much; I switch between hunter bolt and the one that shoots flaming exploding arrows (forget what it's called), only so I can combat wyrms.

Level up as a sorcerer as much as possible.

What level are you? Magick Archer gives pretty good stat increases pre-level 100, past that you get 0 defense growth, so if you find yourself a bit fragile, you might wanna switch out to fighter or warrior, I didn't and both my arisens get killed if something looks at them funny.

MA is arguably the best vocation for Bitterblack Isle, though - Ricochet Hunter butchers garms, Sixfold Bolt tears through Gorecyclops, Eliminators, Drakes and Strigoi and... well, a lot of things.

As for dagger skills, I can honestly say I have no preference for my arisens aside from Hundred/Thousand Kisses. They're not much for melee-ers. (Again, low defense.) Magic Rebalancer is nice, though. It's like a free Demon's Periapt, and can stack with itself up to four times and make you ridiculously overpowered.

Oh, forgot to add -- immolate (is that what it's called), the dagger skill that lights yourself on fire. Then you can wail on wyrms.

I'm level 29.

I went through levels 1-12 as a mage then went straight to magick archer. I'm level 29 as magick archer.

Is it too late to switch back to sorcerer?

Oh! Actually... like Shep said, you're going to want to spend a bit of time as a "tougher" class as well. Let me tell you what I did.

I started off as a strider. I stayed a strider for several levels, probably up to 20 or so. Then I switched to MA. I noticed my arrows weren't really having a lot of effect on the baddies though. I realized "magick" arrow damage depends more on magic than force. So from about level 60-80 I played as a sorcerer. Then from there I was mostly MA, occasionally switching to sorcerer.

I hope that helps. You'll want to get some strider or perhaps fighter in there, otherwise your poor Arisen will be very squishy. But to make those maigick arrows work, yeah, you definitely need to amp up that magick stat for a few levels.

So when I gain some more discipline: 20 levels of strider and 20 levels of sorcerer. Then return to magick archer.

Staying as Magick Archer until level 100 is not the worst thing you could do - the stats are pretty balanced, and you'll become a magic tank.

Post-100 is where you have to really look at where you want your growths to continue. While all the big spikes happen pre-100, most classes have a stat that they contribute nothing to once you hit 100. If you stay as MA (or assassin, or sorcerer) all through 100-200, your defense stat won't increase. That can be nasty.

My second pawn was switching constantly from fighter to sorcerer through his last 100 levels. (He's only 167 now, I think, because I'm too busy putzing around and getting nothing done.) The +3 magic attack is too tempting for me, though, and he usually stays a sorcerer now. It's all about what you want your characters to be. I'm a fan of the crazily-destructive glass cannon. It's just a thing with me.

Are you PlayStation or Xbox? I can help with experience boosters if you're Xbox.

Hmm I know you're the expert here, but honestly, the path I outlined is how I (blindly) built Dai... and he blazes through BBI with no problems whatsoever. Much more so than Rohan, my assassin build. Maybe it's because I started out as strider.

Yeah, MAs are ridiculous. If you plan on remaining a magick archer for the duration, as long as you have a good magic stat, defense ain't gonna be a problem because you'll be too busy killing things to worry about being hit.

Alynna, Solely a sorcerer/mage/magick archer, also has no trouble with BBI as her 'default' profession because she's nowhere near the battle. As soon as she switches to a physical class, though? Totally ineffective and has to rely on her pawns completely.

Kalethai, who has only ever been an assassin as soon as she could access the class, can't survive more than two hits from most things. But her photo album is a hoot. And that's what matters, right? :)

In closing, Magick Archers are incredible. MA + 3 rangers? perfection.

Duh  This discussion is making me want to return to DD:DA! I've still got Kael and Kelly to build. I kind of gave up trying to snap photos though... my efforts just can't compare :P Although I am particularly proud of the shot I have of Alynna shooting her bow but wearing an expression on her face suggesting that she's clearly trying to remember if she left the oven on....

Oh yeah, it's just so over. And then I have Arya, who existed as a warrior for most of her youth, then once she reached infinity became strider/ranger. So is pretty much Dai's personal killing machine.

Dai: Okay, go kill... that. *points*

Arya: Yes, Master! *runs off to initiate the carnage*

Luckily I am just a silly English teacher; we surely do not get in trouble for laughing  Half the time we are standing in the hallway gabbing away with one another; I'm just glad I had my door closed b/c it can be embarrassing when I'm reading something funny and I just start laughing out loud (like I did when reading Shep's post xD).

Also, my boss isn't here this week since he and his wife had a baby <3

And thirdly, my boss's wife is my sister, so that lessens the likelihood of me getting in trouble even more!! xD

Okay. So next stop is playing as a strider for 20 levels, then a sorcerer for 20 levels before returning as a magick archer.

Any cool skills in those two classes that will help me get over the fact I'm not playing as magick archer for 40 levels?

I can't comment on strider skills as the only time I was a strider, I'm pretty sure I was standing atop a wall and letting my pawns kill endless waves of guards while I made myself some dinner. (I actually only unlocked the class at level 200 because I was all about sorcerer and didn't care for physical classes.)

For my pawns, though, Downpour Volley and Fracture Dart all the way. And the multi-arrow, whichever one it is. Fivefold? And the warrior augment Clout (strength +20%, rank 9) is a nice boost in attack power.

As a sorcerer, I lived by Comestion and Brontide. I didn't have the patience for the higher-tiered spells, the cast times felt like they took forever even with the ring/skill to cut them down. Gicel, Bolide and Fulmination are killer, though. I just didn't like being a sitting duck while casting. I felt they were best suited for pawns (or less impatient people).

Sorcerer can net you some nice augments for your MA, though. Acuity (+20% magic) and Articulacy (cut down cast times) are great. Conservation (reduces stamina consumed) doesn't work with magick bow skills despite sounding like it should.

Play around with it, you'll no doubt find a skill you'll get attached to. There's no real "wrong" setup for leveling, most deficiencies can be balanced by end/postgame gear, so don't sweat it too much. Even my glass gals can hold their own with decent armor.

The "ideal" strength and magic stats are 500. After 500 you get minimal returns. If you're leveling after 100, ranger is always a better choice than warrior since you'll gain better magic defense. You should consider switching to hard mode for NG+ since you'll get significantly higher xp gains and money will never be a problem again. If you want to rent any of our pawns you can send friend requests to anyone on the same console as you and you'll be able to rent their pawns for free.

This link leads to the Pawn Community site. If you're interested in the screenshots you can take it's a good site to join.

This is a good page to keep bookmarked if you're interested in hunting the Ur-Dragon.

This should help with gaining bestiary knowledge for your pawn.

In case it hasn't been said already, you can always play as a MA and just switch to Strider or Sorcerer right before you level... although that can be a bit tricky.  On the other hand, all you need is 20 levels of each vocation, so if you mess up once or twice, and don't make it back into town in time to switch, it's not really a big deal.  Just keep a tally and get that level later on... if you do it this way, you should also keep in mind that fetch and collection quests are an easy way to control leveling without having to risk it out in the wilderness.  Once you are within a few thousand exp, check the quest log and see if you have anything you can turn in to make up the difference... if so, head into town, switch the the class you need to be, and turn in the quest.  I'd even suggest saving some of those alehouse quests specifically for this purpose... if you are even going to do this, I mean.

If not, then think of it as intense, focused training in daggers/agility/normal bows, and magic... any skills you learn that can translate between vocations will be useful when you finally switch to MA (like Focused Bolt, Levitate, etc... bow and spellbow skills not so much since the aiming is totally different and many of the skills don't carry over...).  So essentially, you'll be practicing the basics of your future vocation in preparation for the day when you are skilled enough to combine magic and agile combat.

That's all I can think of.

[What's happened so far]

First 10 levels: Mage

Levels 10-14: Mage

Levels 14-28: Magick Archer

Levels 28-33: Sorcerer

Just worked it out using a stat planner. The extra 14 levels for each class aren't making a big enough difference to justify the grind.

I'm rolling with 20 for both classes then rolling with magick archer.

I think getting a good bunch of skills for daggers, magick bow and staff would be useful.

The game throws different challenges so changing my primary weapon between staff and dual daggers might come in handy...
