Hi all, have just purchased DA:O and am beginning my 1st playthrough as a Mage.
I would like to play an "Archmage" type character, unfortunately none of the specialisations seem to fit the archetype.
Do I particularly need to specialise? Is it worth it just for the stat boosts?
Any help appreciated.
Is a specialisation required?

Specializations give certain bonuses to stats -- to dexterity or damage or whatever. They also open a new talent tree based on the specialization. So Shapeshifter for mages will open a talent tree that gives shapeshifting abilities -- spider, bear, stinging swarm and the like.
It is worth using the specializations both for the stat bonuses and the talent trees. Arcane Warrior allows the mage to fight more in a melee style, if desired. Spirit Healer opens a tree of healing talents. I sort of like my mages to be able to heal and revive fallen comrades, so that is the one I usually opt for first.
Do you need to specialize? No. But I'd say it is more than worth it.

Feel free to pick a specialization only for the bonuses, specialization talents were never meant to replace spells but rather complement them. RP-wise you could say that your PC sees these specs as nothing more than hobbies.
The strength of any DA:O mage lies first and foremost in his spells, so if you prefer to stock up on those instead of talents then do so. You'll be missing out on a lot, though, as far as game content/lore is concerned. And yes, a "vanilla" mage can be just as powerful as any other mage when built right.

You only gain from using your specialization points. You don't need to put points into your specialization spells after that.
So if you are really not interested in specialization, find the specializations that give the best passive bonuses and pick them.
Refusing to specialize entirely is a bit silly unless you are a very serious roleplayer.
