If you decide to buy DLCs, make sure you are buying exactly the number of points you need. There is zero reason to have more points then you need. Right now Wardens Keep is the only DLC that need to be paid for, the others are free right now for all new purchases. Wardens Keep is 560 points, and you can buy exactly 560 points. The next DLC is Return to Ostagaar, and that DLC is going to be 400 points, and you can buy exactly 400 points.
So if you end up having more points needed, and with an odd number that you may never use, that is your own fault for buying points that you didn't need yet.
Public service announcement about Bioware points.

You can't really ever get an unusable amount of points. Eg I bought 560 points, if I buy Return to Ostagar I'll have 160 points leftover. I can then buy another 400 points and then I'll be back up to a usable 560 points.
That said: Yeah the system is designed so you have leftover points because it encourages you to buy more to "make the most of your money". Most online stores do this.

That obviously will change because that defeats the purpose of buying junk game currency rather than just paying in actual monetary currency.

How would buying more points make the most of your money? No matter what package you buy, you are paying $1USD for every 80 points. The Bioware Points do not encourage you at all to have left over points. All you need to do is buy exactly the points you need when you want to buy a DLC. There is no reason to have left over points.
There is no reason to pre-purchase Bioware Points if you have nothing to spend them on right away.
It is called being a smart consumer and only buying the exact number of points you'll need to buy what ever DLC that you are going to buy at the same time.

The purpose is to have a standard monetary form of currency with in the game interface so that the developers only need one version of the game, rather then making a different version for every monatary value, and having to make a patch for every version of the game. The points system makes it easier for the developers, since we can buy the DLCs through the interface of the game.
Also, if you notice all the DLCs, and even Return to Ostagaar you can buy exactly the number of points needed to buy them and not have any extra points left.

So it's unlike the Xbox for Windows Live system, that is designed to have leftover points, so that you would buy more points to not have any left over? Nice!

Well, using another arbitrary currency, say dollar, would work just as fine.
Credit card companies and paypal will transfer the dollars to bioware and charge us in Euros, Pounds, Yen or whatever money we use where we live.
The only difference would be that those outside the US would also pay the equivalent of $7 and not significantly more (about $11 in case of Euros)

I think this needs to shown again. Some people are still buying more points then they need to, when there is no reason for it.

It is their money... let them spend it how ever they see fit. With ME2 around the corner i am sure more than a few people from this forum will buy it and if not i doubt that BioWare are finished making DLC's for DAO anyway.

Eisberg....well.... the whole point of the points system is to make people have leftover points.
This is why Bioware should have found some way to incorporate the old forum. This discussion also came up on the old forums, and the same points are being made. (did I say the word "point" enough in this post? [smilie]../../../images/forum/emoticons/smile.png[/smilie])
The points system is very much like the credit/debit card system. Businesses know that consumers spend less if they can physically see their money going away. You are more likely to see the value of your money and hold on to it if it is sitting as cash inside your hand. Retail stores, e.g, therefore made using debit cards much quicker and more convenient than using cash. Debit cards are for the business's benefit, not for the consumer's convenience.
The points system is just another way like a debit card to mask the value of money from the consumer. The consumer feels more confident spending points than spending cash. There is a lot of psychology involved in economics, and businesses have wisened up to it over the years.
Bottomline: Bioware won't be stickying this thread anytime soon, because it would help to defeat the whole point of the points system.

This is hardly a public service announcement.. What part of trying to justify a purposely confusing system that is actually bad for consumers a 'public service'..
It is designed to be confusing.. The prices are advertised in dollars, not points.. it's not until you go to buy them that they throw points at you. The fact that 80 points doesn't equal 1 usd is also designed to make it seem 'cheaper' than it really is.. It is in line with MS points, but the less said about that the better..
There is no reason we should be paying a real currency for a 'virtual currency' that they hold in our 'wallets'.. as a consumer benefit.. It's all for the benefit of the businesses who get to hold onto all the $1.50 here, $6.00 there of thousands of consumers that they can invest and make further money out of.
Remember - you are paying real money for a balance that their terms and conditions state has 'no monetary value'.. =)
Wow, that is really beneficial to me as a consumer right!? I want that money you're holding onto back.. I want it where it can work in my bank earning interest and not yours.. No sorry - It's not money, can't help you. Oh we just stuffed up and lost all record of your account and purchases, I'm sorry we can't 'give' you anything as you never actually owned it (unless you have a record of your purchase, oh customer a you do - here you go. customer b - you didn't keep a receipt - sorry we have no record of you as a customer). I'm sorry customer c - that piece of content just doesn't appear to work for you.. can i point you to our no refunds policy on purchases made via WONDERpoints..
Sorry.. bit of a rant.. but something to think about maybe!?
We're in a new world of digital purchases.. lets all think about our role in that, and get our government representatives to remember that there are consumer protection laws and that they aren't there for the business.. but rather their constituents?
Or we could all just ignore the scary trend and let it continue.. I currently have 'points' with over 8 different companies, each with leftover bits here and there.. none of them transferable, worth anything, or apparently 'real'.. yay virtual currency =)

I'd like to get the shale download but noticed that it will only let me buy a 10 dollars worth of points and 5 dollars worth of points, but for whatever reason I can't charge both on my card at once to get the 15 dollar download needed for shale. wth?
