I didn't ask for it, but is it possible to get Tallis to give up the scroll?

Personally, I don't see a problem with killing Qunari spies.  I don't care if they look and act normal and have families.  They're spies.

Not even an illusion of choice, just the lack of player agency and railroading we should be getting used to by now.

I really didn't mind the Qunari having spies. It's just how the world works. Everyone has spies everywhere. We know Orlais has spies, the Chantry has spies, Ferelden might even have spies, and Antiva sure does. There are Crows everywhere, and it has been said many times before that the Crows run Antiva behind the shadows.

Whats the big deal that the Qunari have spies?

The fact that the Qunari are capable of fighting against every nation of Thedas at once and win.

I think the issue most of us had was that why give an icon asking for the scroll if there is no possibility of getting it? Just have Tallis saying it was nice knowing you and leaving, which is what she does anyway. Instead the writers seem to want to rub it in just how little choice and control you have.

It isn't such a big deal that you don't see the names, since Tallis has already told you what is in the scroll and her actions confirm that on this occasion she is probably telling the truth. Without the names, you can't just storm in and start killing people but instead will have to concentrate on actually winning over the more disadvantaged members of the population that the Qunari have appealed to. Sebastian actually gets this aspect because he says that the rulers are in some way responsible if the alienage elves no longer feel any sort of loyalty and have looked to the Qunari for a better life. There may be human peasants in Orlais who have also converted because their lot is not much better than the elves. I very much doubt that the Ben Hasarath "missionaries" have been entirely truthful with their converts about the true nature of Qunari society.

Everyone working together for the good of all, knowing your place in the world, no useless nobles sponging off the efforts of the poor, or thieves and bandits attacking you or local crime lords terrorising you - these sorts of things would sound very appealling. However, if you then point out the downside - no true family life, if you're deemed breeding material only - then producing a constant stream of babies that you never see grow up, having you matings decided like an animal - sex with the best breeding partner - not for love, never able to change your task in life once it has been assigned and if you complain, not just beaten but forcibly re-educated. If nothing else, spreading this counter information will at least make people question what the Ben Hassrath have told them.

Wise rulers (probably not Orlesian) will also make it worth people's while to remain loyal. I certainly don't think the Qunari philosophy would make much ground in Ferelden, particularly if you had a City Elf warden.

Because the Qunari are the Borg of Thedas.

You can't get the scroll from Tallis because she has your nose. So even if you had the option to tussle with her for it, you'd be at a penalty - I imagine it would be exceptionally difficult (or at least distracting) to fight without your nose. Image IPB

I bet she'd find it more distracting to fight without her sodding head still attached:devil:

In all seriousness, the Ben-Hassrath converts really ought to be educated on what the Arishok did in Kirkwall for starters, and then on the rest of it.  The qunari missionaries have not been very truthful with them.  It's all a transparent ploy on Par Vollen's part to try to gain a strategic advantage.

And them not having spies would somehow change that?

They didn't have spies the first time they arrived, and they almost conquered all of Thedas then. The only difference now is that they have been gathering strength. All the while, they have been batting away any attempts of the Imperium (the strongest magical forces in Thedas) of reclaiming any of their land back.

One way or another we are SOL. Spies or not.

Because the Qunari are the Borg of Thedas.

If Tallis taught us anything, it's that the Qunari aren't all mindless automatons whos only purpose is spreading the Qun. I would agree they are "Borg-ish", but they Qunari are still people though. They each have their own voice in the Qun, and they can argue what is the right thing to do.

Hawke does do something about it. He informs those in power. Unfortunately it goes about as well as convincing Turian Councillors about the Reaper threats. Its detailed in a journal you find in your library after the DLC.

Ah yes, 'qunari spies'. Sleeper agents allegedly dispersed throughout Thedas in advance of a Kossith invasion. We have dismissed that claim.

That's.... actually really nice to see. Granted the ending to the DLC where he demands the scroll is still horrible but at least Hawke did do something afterwards.

Thank you for the information about the journal. As I had done both Legacy and MoA, I had no reason to go upstairs again so had no idea it was there. It actually makes me feel a lot better to know the writers allowed Hawke to show a bit of initiative after the event and show that it wasn't their fault if no one listened to them. I feel a lot less angry about the ending of MoA now.
