Ultimately - characters are going to fall within a certain range of looks with this character creator. You can still eke out something that still feels like your own creation yet falls within the standards of the Dragon Age world.

Interposing these limits in some ways is not very fun - I cant make a super short, incredibly fat dwarf who looks more efficient rolling then walking - but would a dwarf like that have survived in Ferelden? We have to make some concessions on the side of role playing - as all role players must to fit a campaign setting.

More options are always going to be nice - and this game is an improvment on Mass Effect in that regard but I feel they have not reached what gamers are still waiting for in character creation (and thats okay).

What bugged me the most however is how twitchy my character was during creation. He was bobbing his head all over the place as if he was watching a bat fly crazily through the room.

They definitely should have put some music in there, instead of the trailer at the start.

Other than that it's pretty nice. It seems to be decently easy to make some fine characters without spending hours on it (Oblivion), and you get a lot of options (unlike NWN2). The interface is clear and simple enough. I'm still messing around though, my human male looks... sad. There might be something missing with the eyes, I don't know.

I hope the game manual will be reasonably complete and explain fully how the system works though, I'm a bit anxious about attributes and how I should plan out my character.

Overall, I'm pretty happy. I still find it difficult to make attractive female faces, but I suspect that's just me - I had the same problem in ME and Oblivion.

I do think the thing about the beards forcing a certain jaw/mouth shape is weird - especially since the beards don't actually fit the face shape we're forced to use. Also, one of the beard options consists of rather short sideburns - that doesn't seem like it should make it necessary to lock down the shape of the entire lower face.

I like it, I'm not that great at sliders and such though.:)

I agree about the hairstyles, more would be nice. But at least the ones we get are a hell of a lot better than some of the choices in past games. Overall, I had a blast on the CC. Green eye shadow and lipstick? hawt

I have to agree with bothe the statements about hair.

I'd also like to complement the eyes themselves and the make up. LIGHT YEARS ahead of ME's which ended up being sort of garrish no matter what you tried.

I'm quite pleased with it. :D had a blast with the expression slider, and am very happy with all of my characters. (I've already made one per origin :D)
As has been said, though, I do wish there was more variety in terms of tattoos. Scars would be nice too.:P

Great tool and I'm looking forward to the game even more now. That said, I do have some thoughts....

Camera focal length is too short and distorts the face so you don't get a real look at your toon except in the tiny portrait window. Lighting could be brighter or outdoors under the light you will most often see your toon so you can accurately judge the colors.

Expression changes with eyebrow height and eye choices. A little of that is to be expected but expressions are far too tied to the proportion choices. You can't put the brow all the way down without your toon looking worried because the center tips of the eyebrows stop moving down and angle up. Need extra morphs to tweak the eyebrows and eyes and the sides of the mouths....gonna do some screen caps to explain a little. Most of the expressions make my toon look like he is slightly confused or sad, not exactly heroic.

Mouth crease on female elf again makes an expression. Like she's a disapproving librarian--again pictures...

Expressions on portrait are lame--funny but lame--here I'm complaining about a choice you didn't need to put in at all--jeeze

Tats for male human and male elf are feminine, Dwarf is nice and blocky but others are curvy and although they are on the face and therefore kinda tough-guy, the actual designs are girly. General male/female design principles apply: Males you concentrate on the face shape and jaw, use more sharp angles and straight lines then curves and use bold shapes. Females you draw attention to the mouth and eyes, use more curves then straights.

Scars would be nice but I think the community will come up with textures pretty easy.

Stubble choices kinda strange looking

Ears go from average to huge, no small option

female character hair length is limited

mouths distort a little when speaking but I'm very glad for the movement at all. It adds to the immersion greatly and it won't look too bad at a distance

No body type choices? Height and weight at least. Big let down there. Maybe the narrative story is pretty restrictive and you'd look funny as a real skinny or heavy grey warden but I like to make a rpg toon as much like me as possible. Especially if I'm playing an elf or dwarf, I like to change the body to be a little more human.

Dwarven faces are awesome, male and female

Nice colors and textures, attractive characters. Nice lips on the ladies.

Portraits you can use as an avatar is a great idea.

Voices seem very well done.

Bravo for delivering on time and for doing it at all!

Character Creator is pretty cool, I created three characters and now I'm waiting to be able to use them as avatars :).

Only choices that I miss: body type (lean, athletic, large etc.) and height settings. Also, like it was mentioned above, the facial expression is a little too tied to other face settings. You could have put a "smile/worried" slider too.

The idea of changing various portrait options is quite original, thanks for that.

Graphically, the tool is fine. Gameplay wise, its one of the least interesting character creations I've seen in a long time. Assign 5 attribute points, done. Boring :(

Yeah, surely it's no Arcanum (to mention one of the most complex character creators of the last decade) but let's hope we'll be able to tool around enough with our characters during the game.

Thats for the released game, you get to assign your skills after importing the character you made in the Character creator. They said that the character creator wouldn't contain the skill system, so seeing attributes in it is kinda strange. ;)

Overall, I think it's great, there's a pretty good amount of customization possible, with just about the right tweaking increments. I also liked the fact that there was a good variety of pretty good looking presets to work from, and that one actually has to work at it to make something that looks bad (rather than the other way round).

I do have a couple minor gripes. I didn't care for most of the tattoo designs, and think there should have been more asymetrical ones. I was hoping they'd be more for a little stylistic touch, rather than this huge thing on your entire face.

I also would have liked just a few more hair options, more of the longish variety for females, and more of the short variety for males.

And it would have been nice to be able to make minor body tweaks, give someone plus or minus an inch of height, and make someone slightly less or more bulky, nothing fancy.

All in all though, it's probably the best character creator I've personally used, when considering all factors (variety, end results, ease of use, etc).

More hairstyles needed. Especially for females.

I agree with as some have said here, more hairstyles is rather needed. Thing is, there already are many but are race restricted. I want better short hair for my human noble and when I went to make an elf I noticed that the exact hair I needed for my human was available as an elf. This is really dragging me into rather making an elf but I want to be a human.

I'm impressed with the maturity level of the responses here. Makes for an easy read and I can see everyone's opinions about the Character Creator very clearly. I would like to add that it is also rather dark for me and somewhat hard to see the color of the eyes. Speaking of color, I agree the tattoos need more color, and that we need more hair options. At least 4 of them are very similar to the previous hair model that they are practically the same. I saw someone mention earlier and it is something I forgot in my first post... but I love how the character speaks when playing the different voices.

It's a good character creator. Though some things I'd like to point out,

- Hair styles. Male hairstyles are mostly not very attractive if you ask me.

- Noses. All noses seem very odd to me, the shapes are just weird.

- Eyes. Most of the eyes you can choose from are also just weird looking.

I liked creating my characters but there were the biggest issues I could see an improvement made upon.

Look forward to the real game! :)

Oh, by the way: finally hearing DA:O main theme in the context of the game (albeit just the CC launcher...you could have extended it to the actual character creation as well! Hope it's going to be in the final version) is great :)

I had this problem as well, but had put it down to the interum videocard I'm using atm. :?

OK, found a deal-breaker of a problem here that has to do with how the program is written, I think.

- When returning to edit a saved file, and changing the character's class (Mage to Rogue, because I changed my mind), the player-modified character model is immediately replaced by the default version (in this case, preset female with red hair and white skin). Rather irritating given that I spent quite a bit of time painstakingly creating my character, and it would be a pain to recreate her all over again. A fix, pretty please? Thanks. :)

It was dark for me as well, but going into the options and turning up the brightness cleared it right up.

I certainly hope it isn't my video card.  I have a 1GB 4870 OC'd GPU.

If I recall they warn you that all data will be lost if you go back to change class.  It is unfortunate but I wouldnt call it a deal breaker - just know what you want to do ahead of time in that regard.

I concur with several of the concerns previously mentioned: it's a bit dark, I wish there were more eyebrow choices, and there were some buggy things with the Dalish elf tattoo saving... On the flipside, easy to use, lots of tattoos (more would've been nice, but there were plenty to start with), expressions/mouth moving while talking was cool. Personally, there were plenty of hairstyles to my tastes, but maybe I'm simple in that regard. Overall, I like. Hopefully it transitions to about the same on the Xbox. :)
