But the lighting could be improved, and some background music would certainly not be unwelcome!

I hope all Mass Effect fans will agree with me in saying that this character creator is far improved from the one in ME.

For the music just click on the "background.wma" file in C:\\\\Games\\\\Dragon Age Origins Character Creator\\\\data\\\\launcher folder and loop it. It's 2 min 50 seconds long. Still playing with the creator. Just made my best version of my gf. Yes I have a gf. Honest. Seriously, a real one. I had to quit WoW for her but it was totally worth it.

Well, I have to say that the TES: 4 face creator beats DAO's one hands-down. I've yet to see a video game feature the level of customization that Bethesda offered.
Which is not to say that DAO's character creator is bad, but I'm having issues with the nose. Nearly every face I make ends up with a nose that could double as a spear.
Anyone have any pointers on how to make a flatter and/or upturned nose?

I hope the devs hear some of the great ideas/concerns that everyone is posting and releases some changes in an upcoming patch (release day?).

It'd be virtually impossible to have weight/height sliders due to the amount of cutscenes. They'd have to make a cut scene for every race, every gender, and every weight/height varient.Cla-Wi wrote...
It's good enough, but not so impressive. Our body size and age should have sliders as well. I'm very happy with how my character came out, but I feel lucky.

Anyone playing (or played) Aion? That character creator is awesome! After using that, I guess I have very high expectations now.

I think the female hair options were okay. They are never perfect but this time there were more than just one I could imagine using. Female hairs were the thing I was most anxious about since it's so frustrating trying to create a character without any nice hair options.
The biggest complaint I have are the eye colours: I simply can't separate them. The blues, greys and greens are too similar. I wish they had texts naming the colours.

Firstly, after a day of playing with the CC, I'm generally quite happy. The overall graphical styling seems to fit well with the style of the world in DA:O (at least, based on trailers/screenshots), while still allowing a good amount of customization.
Most of the sliders work well, and offer a good range of choices, though there are a few exceptions (most notably eyebrows).
I'm particularly happy about the introduction of "intensity" sliders on the makeup and tatoo options; this was something that was sorely lacking in the ME character generator, and allows for a choice of how subtle makeup should be. I'd still like a bit more detailed control over the eye makeup, but that's probably just because I've done character makeup for film and theater. What I'd really like is an "advanced" tab or something, which would allow multiple shades of eye shadow/liner to be put in layered, overlapping zones, with an HSV+transparency color picker for each; see www.temptalia.com/tutorial-reference-eye-diagram-parts-of-the-eye-basic-eye-makeup for a basic primer on eye makeup zones. I acknowledge that this might be more detail than most people would want to go into, but it's something I've always wanted in this type of face creator and have yet to actually see implemented.
I like the ability to generate a portrait from the actual toon; the options we have are great, though they leave me hungry for more (especially more "expressions").
Having a bit more control over the camera and lighting would be nice; some ability to zoom in and out would be nice, as would the ability to flip through a couple of different lighting environments. The current lighting doesn't bother me as much as it does some, probably because I'm used to stage lighting, which often makes use of cool light from one side and warm from the other. Even so, having the ability to see how a character will look under several different lighting conditions would be nice, and shouldn't be all that difficult to do (eg. a slider or toggle "default" lighting, "indoor" lighting, and "outdoor" lighting).
Overall, I'm quite happy with the ability to create a character that looks a certain way. More options is always better, but I'm sure the modding community will add more hairstyles, etc. soon enough.
The most major complaint I have about character generation as it stands is the voice options. Somewhat to my surprise, I've seen several comments in this thread about how good the vocal choices were. While the options we have are certainly better than the ones available in, say, NWN2, they still cover only a very limited range. For a given race/gender, you are stuck with a particular voice actor. The "choice" is actually one of disposition more than of voice. With a game like ME I can understand why you can't give a choice (and Jennifer Hale did a great job), but in a game like this, it would be nice to be able to actually choose a voice, as well as a mood. Every female voice in the current version of the CC is an alto; are there no sopranos in the world of DA:O? The male voices at least cover different ranges, though the choice of high or low voice is still tied to a choice of mood, and ultimately pretty limited.
Finally, a big "thanks" to the devs for getting us this three weeks early! It's awsome, and my critiques here are intended only to help you make it even more awsome in the future.

Character looks and characteristics
First, and most important: I'm missing options to customise the body. While I understand the player is a normal member of society and not some kind of freak, I think just being able to alter the face is not enough to make a really unique character. I think a slider for lenght and one for body mass or muscles (both within limits of course) are needed to distinguish your 2-handed mace wielding fighter from your mage who thinks a spellbook is a heavy load.Or a fat eat-everything young bloke from an old, well trained wiry adventurer. Throw in a head size slider for even more customisation.
Also, I think there could be more options for hairstyles. Especially for female characters there seem to be only three main ones with some minor differences. The sme goes for facial hair: not many options. Mixing beard and stubble makes stubble look very flat and 2D, which in turn makes the beard look glued on. Not too many eyebrow options either. The tattoo/makeup colouring and especially the intensity sliders are very good though.
Not being able to customise the mouth in combination with a beard makes almost all dwarves look thick lipped, which is a pity. The default hands seem rather large, same goes for the ears, even on smallest. And the teeth.. just no. Scars in addition to the skin complexion setting could help in making characters look more... for lack of a better word: characteristic.
Finally, the voices don't strike me as very unique. I don't know how much the protagonist speaks and if it's a lot, one more voiceset would be a lot of work, but the ones we do have don't sound all too different really. For example, for an older male human, only the Experienced voice would fit in my opinion. For human females... none really.
Clothing and armor
Everything is very shiny. From the Noble Dwarf's armor to the Elven Mage's robe. Cloth usually isn't shiny and gear gets dirty when used, especially when the wearer runs off to kill stuff. One of the things that can make characters stick out of the environment like a sore thumb is being too squeaky clean in a gritty world. NWN2 had that problem, the chars always seemed to have been edited into the scene in their newest and best clothes (which is kinda true, but we want to forget that).
offtopic
I do hope the environment isn't as shiny as the armor. A shiny cobbled road is fine when it's rainy, but overall the world should be dusty, gritty, messy. Hygiene probably isn't that important in the game's societies and the world should show it.
The creator program
The sliders work very well, which makes the face is tweakable to excellent detail without much effort. A zoom function would have been nice though, to be able to see the face from a distance without having to use Previous/Next all the time.
Lighting is an issue. It would have been better to have different lighting options during character creation. As some posters already suggested, at least a "Daylight" option next to the current dark environment would be a good addition. Especially when tweaking skin tone and colours of tattoos/makeup.
The portrait customisation is excellent though. Two thumbs up.
That's all my (mostly negative) points. This doesn't mean I don't intend to play the game, it's just feedback on where I think the character creation process could be improved.

The options that are there are generally quite well done, I would just like a few more options. Mouth and eyebrow shape for example, a proper blond hair color or two (I rarely play blondes, but choice is always good), and especially more hairstyles: braid, ponytail, short and curly, short and wavy, etc. I wish some of the male hairstyles were available for women, too. I'd so give Sten's to my dwarf noble warrior if I could.
And the problem with the existing longer hair styles for women is that they look good in theory, but without any animation they'll just look fake or helmet-like in action. We probably won't have much leasure to pay attention to that in combat, but in cutscenes it might look really odd.
EDIT: And I agree with whoever posted that it would be nice if making "badass" female characters was a bit easier.
