The CC is okay so far. Much like ME's but this time with more options and easier to use than in Fallout 3 or Oblivion's. Two minor cons for me though. The lighting is dim. When my character is outside in a sunny day it might happen that I ended up with a wrong skin/lip/cheeck blush tone. And then hairstyle and brow choices are kinda limited (for females at least). Also no forehead edit option? Or did I miss it?

If you mean forehead slope, that's "Brow Depth" (not very intuitively named, IMO).

I will second the observation that the background is too dark. I still have no idea if the barber gave me a good haircut...

You can adjust the Gamma rating on the options menu to brighten it up a bit.

You know what annoys me? This is not about the CC in particular but I would like to see what exact settings people used on this site to make their characters so I can see how to make certain facial features.

It would be rather awesome if one could export a character's slider settings to a little file which could then be loaded at will by others. Would save a lot of the hassle in celebrity lookalike topics with numerical descriptions of all the sliders. Add an "export plain text" button for easy copy/paste into forums and you have a winner.

Didn't know there wouldn't be music the first run. But the second run in the character creator, I fired up some epic music by Opeth and everything was suhweet.

The biggest issues I've come across is:
* Very few hairstyles
* All mouthed voices tend to really strech the lips on the elven characters (female)
* I'd want more non symetrical tattoos
* The expression slider should have different expressions, not a flud motion from sober to smirking imho
* No way to adjust height

But all in all, very very very cool stuff!
One good thing I noted to myself was that your surname is static. I therefore believe your character will often be addressed by his or her surname than not. So, it prevents your valiant knight named "Kick Ass" to be refered to in dialogues as "Sir. Ass here", "Hey! Ass! Get over here!". :police:

The best thing about the character creator must be that you get serveral tries and re-do's to get the perfect first avatar.

Alright it doesn't have as much options as I thought it would have but it does the job quite nicely.

It's much better then the one from mass effect =) Most of the time you will be looking at the character ingame and then all the small details don't really matter.. I'm excited to see it in the anticipated cut scenes tough =)

Yeah I found it, thanks a bunch. Still you can't directly edit forehead tallness, to do so you have to lower down lips, nose, eyes, eyebrows and stuff. Anyway I'm quite happy with the CC after all which can't be said about female models but meh, that's a different issue. -_-

I am dissapointed that we can't change body proportions, at least the basic height/weight/muscle - many faces look weird with the default one. Image IPB

I'm glad it's simplified. I love character customization, but you needed a freaking strategy guide just to figure out how to make a half decent looking character in Oblivion. It was really complicated and, quite frankly, intimidating to use.

That said, I wish there were more expressions.

I think it's pretty cool, I like the fact that you can make decent looking characters unlike in something like oblivion, and its got quite a good range of customization. That being said couple of issues:

*Lack of cool hairstyles - there doesn't seem to be a lot of hairstyles to choose from and they aren't that great. I noticed some really cool styles from some of their wallpapers aren't there, namely the female mage and especially the female city elf (which looks mean - in a good way ;))

*Lack of eyebrow choices which can really change the look you are trying to get in a face

*Lack of music - they should really have the different themed music for the various races :P

Otherwise, I think its quite good.

It still has a few bugs though, for example if you use pre-faces other then the first, then the char will get a whole different face once you save it.

Same with beards as well, once you save a guy with a beard, his cheeks get swallowed in.

My intial impressions.
  • Black skin texture is a bit purple
  • Range of eyes is a bit limited.
  • Variety is ok, not exactly great.
  • Good selection of voices
  • cant angle my eyebrows at all? :P
  • Wish you could change character height within a small range.

Aside from black skin looking a tad...purple, and hair choices being a little limited, I think it's great.

To be honest I was expecting it to be a bit more complex than this. Granted I didn't want another oblivion cc, but at least something that would offer more variety. Hairstyles and tatoos are somewhat lacking, but I'm sure the community will solve that problem. Would have also liked muscle and height sliders, but overall I like it.

yeah im afraid the lack of variety will lead to a very "Samy" amount of characters.

Its like a sims character creator before they release expansions. (Coming soon, Dragon Age: Tiki Island Fun Stuff)

I agree, definitely need some more options with the hairstyles, men's mostly.

The skin tones need some tweaking, offer more of a range of colors ... like they say, there are many shades of black, and I rather not be of the purple-black variety. Same with the run-of-the-mill hair colors.

Other than that, the whole eyebrow selection. That one thing can sometimes be a deciding factor on a character's appearance and personality.

Something I would add as well are scars, or some distinguishing markings other than tattoos. You're able to make your character older looking, younger looking, etc. so why not some options for wear and tear?

All in all, I would say that this Character Creator is Sim-ish, but lacking the seemingly small details.

Then again, it's Dragon Age and not Sims. Every specific detail of a character may not be able to be personalized, but you guys did a great job in exceeding expectations

I'd say I've been rather happy with it, overall. There are some issues that I, and others, have had but that's about it. Some of those smaller issues where listed: Here. Even with those little annoyances though, I really can't be anything but grateful they've decided to share this with us so early on, and just happy with it despite any problems.

Apart from having very few hairstyles i would find appropriate for a mage character, i think the character creator is spot on.

I was a little disapointed, really. Mostly because you can't really change the face shape much. I tried to go for a long, pointy face for my elf girl, but I couldn't do it. Then I tried to make the classic heart-shaped face, but again the variables aren't there. Other than that it's pretty nice, but the fact that all the characters basically have 3-4 head shapes (based on race and gender) bugs me a little.

Honestly, the best Chargen I've ever seen came from a F2P MMO called Perfect World. That's sad. It's F2P. Mind you, the rest of the game was pretty much what you payed for it, but I hope to see a chargen like that again some day.

I was neither dissepointed or impressed tbh. It's great that the sliders are independed unlike in Oblivion as the OP said. But other then that it's pretty much the same as other games. (atleast imo)

Altho i do love the portrait slider. Very unique and realy cool. :) Just sad it dident exist "normal" face expressions so to say.

Hmmm... I guess I'm one of the few (the only) to not mind the lack of music. I sometimes spend hours making characters and, believe me, if you have to listen to the same music looping over and over again, sooner or later you're going to want to start screaming at your machine to shut up. It gets old fast.

As far as the actual tool goes, I like it. Not horribly complex and intimidating like Oblivion's (yuck) or a little too simplified like ME's. It has a nice range of choices without overloading you with details.

As far as the starting points, those are built in and based on your origins, for people who were confused. They don't really count for much, though. They're just freebies for flavor, kind of like elves getting the longbow feat for free in D&D. For you powergamers out there, it just means that you should pick the origin that would take advantage of the starting point. For example, if you want to be the ultimate tank, you should pick the human or dwarven noble origin, I guess. Want to dual-wield as a warrior? Pick City Elf or Dwarven Commoner. Each origin and class has different starting points. And then at startup, everyone gets a set amount to blow on everything else they want. At least, that's the way I understand it.

I have to say I was expecting just a little more. Don't get me wrong, I think it's a definite improvement over the ME character creator, but more choices, more detail, I suppose is what I was expecting.

Like many others I found the lighting incredibly dark and ended up cranking up the gamma in the creator to be able to see eye colors / skin tones, etc.

I would love the darker skin tones to be less red, as someone pointed out.

More hairstyles for both males and females would be great! Also, you can't seem to have truly black hair, at least not that I could see. But, with my gamma ratcheted up so high that could be just me.

It doesn't seem difficult to create unique characters. So far, I've done 4 and none of them look alike in the least, which is a good thing!

Overall, I'm happy to have the creator to play around with, it's great for a few minutes of fun here and there. Major props to BioWare for releasing it to us all, everyone there deserves a big pat on the back and a latte! :)

It's about what i expected and i'm mostly happy with the CC apart from a few issues other people have already mentioned (lack of body editing, limited face shapes and hair selections, ...)

But those are, to me at least details, I'm just happy that even someone like me with no artistic talent whatsoever, and not much time to play around with the cc, can make some decent-looking characters. :)

I'm fairly confident that most issues will either be resolved by Bioware in a patch, or added through modding, anyway.

Overall, a great favour done to us by the devs, kudos to them.
