I've played through Dragon Age 2 four times, and I've never gotten this mission until now.  At the beginning of Act 2, there was a plot flag with an elf and an old dwarf complaining that Varric's stories about the Deep Roads and Hawke's adventuring led his sons down there.  Has this quest always been there and I just missed it?  I'm stoked to be going back into the Deep Roads in Act 2.

And speaking of things I'd never heard before...what does Sandal mean when he says he saw something nasty in the shed?  Anyone else got that dialogue?

"Fool's Gold" is only available if you import a save/ use a preset history where Nathaniel Howe isn't with the Wardens any longer (or never was/ is dead). "Fool's Gold" then replaces the Act 3 quest "Finding Nathniel".

It's just a joke. It's a reference to a book/movie called "Cold Comfort Farm", where the resident old lady is always on about how she saw something nasty in the woodshed.

There is also a bug that gives you this quest, even if you should have received the "Finding Nathaniel" quest instead. I find it really annoying since Varric's last armor upgrade can only be found in "Finding Nathaniel".

The bug happened to me by importing a save from "Dragon Age: Awakening" in which I did not take him with me to defeat the Mother. Even though I left him at the fortified Vigil's Keep to save Amaranthine (and got the slide at the end of the game that said he survived the seige at the Keep), DA II for some reason thinks he died.

I'm still holding out hope that the next patch will fix this issue, or at least allow Varric's final armor upgrade to be available no matter which quest you get. Image IPB

mmmf . . .  MMMMFFF . . . (covers mouth) . . . mmMMFF BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAAAA!

Fix a minor detail like Varric's last upgrade when they could work on shelling folks for another $10 DLC?

I tried not to laugh . . . but surely you must me joking.  That would be like when they had a YEAR to add a simple pair of boots to the cabinet in the Lothering Chantry . . . but they never did.

Thank you for such a clear, concise and helpful reply. I've recommended you to BioWare should they ever need a forum administrator with your level of professionalism. Bravo! Take a bow - you've earned it!

I had the same bug happen to me. Since Fool's Gold was triggered in my DAII run, I'm wondering if future games will still think Nathaniel is dead despite the fact that he shouldn't be.

For the longest time I would always get the "Finding Nathaniel" quest but that was because I was using an Awakening import file where I chose to protect Vigil's Keep instead of Amaranthine (Nathaniel had been recruited and the Keep was completely upgraded so all who stayed behind survived).  I recently went back and saved Amaranthine and got "Fool's Gold" instead. I've been reading a couple of the wikis out there and apparently the story flags on the import file if you played Awakening are messed up. Image IPB

Thanks for the recommendation.  Alas, I think you'll get about as much help with that as getting Varric's 4th armor upgrade as the devs and mods here are unaffected by smart alec comments.  Most of them are dishing the same types of comments out or simply writing things like "end of line".  Quite frankly I think that's how it should be too.  Anyone with some type of fame is going to get criticized.  Those who wish to continue should just hrug it off.

Note:  Chris Priestly is the only one I've encountered who actually mingled politely without an agenda with the forumites.  Hence he is on my friends list.

And if you must know, I don't blame the devs as much as I blame their bosses applying pressure to them.  "Make me a sequel now!  An action sequel! More money!  Don't talk to me about bug fixes, the product already shipped!  We've got their money!  You want another paycheck you'll toe the company line!"

Anyway - my cheap shot is directed at BioWare/EA , not you.  And like I said . . . part of me respects them not wasting their time with a pair of boots, an armor slot, or an internet critic.

I apologize for not choosing my words perfectly.  I also apologize for not being concise - it's a forum and I come here sometimes to blab.

I also apologize for not being helpful - wait - I was being helpful.  I pointed out that 1) Nobody is going to fix Varric's armor so fugetaboutit and 2) you should learn to think economically about games.  If the problem is not big enough to totally ruin the game, it's not getting fixed.  Varric functions just fine without his 4th armor upgrade, it's not a game breaker, so it will go untouched as the developers work on more important fixes that prevent the loss of clients (aka future revenue) or new material that will bring in more revenue.

I never understood why Fool's Gold is only available for a "no Nathaniel" import. That made no sense to me because both Finding Nathaniel and Fool's Gold have nothing to do with one another other than where they take place.

Being unable to do both quests is great if there's a good solid reason why you can't do them. These two.... didn't have one.

I think the goal there was simply to provide an opportunity for another Deep Roads adventure for the player regardless of his/her choices.

As to why a player couldn't go on both quests, I suspect they didn't want to shortchange those players who executed Nathaniel or left him to die at Vigil's Keep.
