First Tai, I think we're saying the same thing, I just have different ideas on where things 'connect' so to speak. You're the paragon, I'm the renegade, but in the end we're both going to destroy the Batarian system in the end.

Tai MT wrote...
Anyone who has worked in Customer Support/Serverices can also tell you how easy it is to spot someone trying to game the system and not actually report a real complaint.

I used to work for Game and JB HiFi which sells computer game stuff (and in the case of JB HiFi, that was the particular part I was focused on) and it's not universally true how 'easy' it is to spot someone. If you do spot someone and tell them the reason why you wouldn't fulfill their request then it goes against what you describe later on how you never do any business with them because they've essentially called you a liar (even if you are actually a liar) and how you wouldn't ever do business with them anymore. How does the business win in this situation? Oh nevermind in actually responding to that I guess unless you really want to (or put into PM), it's really becoming another conversation rather than 'Mass Effect 3 Demo FAQ' if this continues.

Tai MT wrote...
If you treat your customers like idiots, which ones are going to want to buy your product?  Ever been told, as a customer, that you were wrong?  Bet you didn't feel like spending money with that company anymore, did you?  I have.

If someone has misunderstood something that doesn't mean they're 'idiots.' The onus is on the company however to make sure the channels are clear and make sure information is concise (and more importantly 'correct') but this I guess really 'depends' on the product. I don't, for example, think that the mass effect 3 demo is as say important to me as the mass effect 3 game itself, so I have a lesser extent of 'satisfy me' in regards to information I want from BioWare as if it was the actual game itself being delayed.

That being said; I think it would be simple courtesy if BioWare said: "Sorry guys, the demo will be delayed to x date." I don't think them telling me why this is delayed is that important to me compared to knowing what date the demo will come out. If it's the game itself (i.e., something I'm happy to spend money for) then I think it would be more palatable for me if I knew why the game was delayed (albeit not in absolute detail, I don't care for example that of the 340 bugs detected there's only 5 remaining, one could be critical).

Tai MT wrote...
I've had companies tell me I'm wrong and cite some rule or regulation or try to call me a liar.  In these instances, I've stopped doing business with them, and told my friends of my experience.  "Word of mouth" is the most powerful marketing tool any company can possess.  It takes just one irritated/angry customer to ruin your business.  Just one.  So "the customer is always right" is a good policy to have.

Word of mouth is important because it's effectively free publicity, but you're overexaggerating it's worth if you think it'll 'ruin' someone's business, unless it's a really small business such as the local lawnmower business down the street that employs a single person (the owner) with their own equipment. BioWare doesn't qualify as this. Considering the divide of opinion on the Mass Effect 3 Demo and the quality (or lack thereof) of bioware official representatives in keeping us abrest of changes, it's very unlikely to massively damage BioWare, the Mass Effect brand or even EA.

The issue to what you're talkign about though really depends on how blunt the company says you're wrong and in context, because believe it or not the customer can be wrong. The customer may be confused, the customer may have done something incorrectly and sure the company can try to assist but in the end it depends on context.

Recently I tried out Adobe InDesign, I installed it but every time I tried to run it the program would terminate out of it's load by prompting me with an runtime error. Contacting customer service (via the forums) they apologised but said they wouldn't help me because I had the trial, but would be happy to help if I purchased the actual product. When I said I wasn't likely to purchase a product that doesn't work they re-iterated their position but stuck to their guns. I accepted this (even though I don't particularly like the whole idea of their policy) but I didn't really think to 'bad word of mouth them' because I think Adobe makes quality products. I guess this makes this paragraph deliciously ironic then.

Tai TM wrote...
But there is NO COMPANY that EVER apologizes for major screw ups or for screwing their fanbase.  They just take their money, and usually "pack up and go home".

Arrowhead Game Studios -- the creators of Magicka, can be pretty apologetic. BioWare (and other companies), take note.

Tai TM wrote...
This also brings me to my point about "the customer is always right".  I'm sorry, but you do have to assume the customer is right.  Without a customer, you don't have a business.  I don't care if you're selling air to breathe on a planet without an atmosphere...  If you're an unlikable jerk who treats customers like mindless drones or utter contempt...  The new guy down the street is going to do a lot more business by simply saying, "I sell the same product, but I'M NICER".

Generally, I agree. However, I've been in enough situations where the customer is trying to give me and the company a ride. So the statement that 'the customer is always right' is quite clearly wrong. A lot of customers are good people who are genuinely in a position that requires help, and I'm more than happy to clear the situation up if it is in my power. This could be as simple as saying "hmm, I can't do anything for you, but if you wait here I can start the ball rolling by calling Microsoft Technical Support on your behalf -- just give me some details" etc, etc.

The issue I take with your statement is entirely predicated that you used the word always. Because that's an absolute statement that I know beyond reasonable doubt is wrong and that's what I've been trying to illustrate (badly) in these two posts to you.

But back to the Mass Effect 3 Demo -- hurry up BioWare, your minions await it with frothing jaws and a mad gleam (I can't be the only one).

And a sneak peak at the multiplayer. Personally I'd like to see how much fun it is, especially with the kinect capability.

They really need to release something online soon if just to test the capabilities of whatever servers they will be using as hundreds of thousands of people try connecting with their friends for multiplayer. Unless they have a way for simulating this in the development studio, if they release the demo and the multiplayer part has several bugs that were unknown prior to the massive number of people downloading and using it, I know I would feel better if they had the month of February to fix the bugs. Releasing the demo that is testing out a new gameplay mechanic not previously implemented in any previous Mass Effect game so close to the actual release date seems like a recipe for disaster.

Hi everyone

Sorry, the link was
pulled at the source. There is apparently an embargo on the demo, so the
reporter in question pulled down their article. I also have to delete
the images from it. Please do not repost them.

This being the
internet, you can't unsee the info already being discussed here, but the
article and images will have to wait until the 18th. Sorry.

I feel bad for the poor families of those reporters, who most likely will not be seeing their loved ones again. Or perhaps I misunderstand "pulled at the source".   Image IPB

The demo is coming out on the 17-18th.
My friend at a gaming site told me, and since I am under no embargo, I can say it. :)
And since I will not reveal who she is, he will get in no trouble.

Kinect compatibility will not be used in multiplayer. I'm too lazy to find the source, but I definitely read that in one of the ME3 rundowns I found in the last few days.

I think it will be on the 17th. I don't have proof or anything, but somewhat of an absurd reason... Tomorrows January 17th, right? So you take that 1-17 and when you connect both the ones you get an "N"... N7 right? It may be significant but it's more likely the result of me watching how Nicholas cage connects plot events in the national treasure movies haha :P

Time machine? Nah, let's go all commander Shepard and go into orbit of a planet and get froEn, then thawed out. Only drawback is it may take 2 years, BUT we will be unconscious the entire time :D
