You found Mage to be a boring one-kill extravaganza? Mage was the most tactical class there imo, the class where most thinking and involvment was required...

I had to deal with one-kill wonders in DA:O all of the time. In fact I found the combat so boring in DA:O that I would have to fight falling asleep during the fights.
I don't have either problem with the combat in DA2 though plus I actually enjoy playing as mages in DA2, whereas in DA:O, I absolutely HATED playing as a mage.
^this, i agree that DA2 mage is hella fun even if firestorm isnt up to par with inferno, hated the poking motion in Origins, which is why i switched to using a sword, before realizing the Arcane Warrior spec

What's "fun" about it - the animations? (not trying to say you can't enjoy it - rather I'm wanting to know more about what's good about the game)...

It's a mixed bag. I don't like the over stylized combat, but I do like being able to hit an enemy that is running by. However, if I change my mind about an attacking a certain enemy and choose to move away instead, I cannot. The pace of the combat is fine, but the enemies have tons of HP now and won't properly die when their bar is empty. You can avoid being hit by a sword or charge, but now you can't avoid being hit by arrows.
Then for some strange reason, invisible enemies can immobilize you. Cool downs for attacks by enemy AI are way shorter than yours, and are often spammed.
