I was wondering, the Codex entry on the Sky Horror segment talks about a tribe of Avvar barbarians, it also says that most of the other tribes in the region were destroyed or driven south into Ferelden when the Imperium arrived. So this got me thinking, are Avvar Barbarians native to that part of the world? I think David Gaider said that the Tevinter Imperium stamped out Avvar barbarians in other parts of the world but failde to do so in Ferelden but the Codex says they were splintered from the Alemarri who came from across the Frostback Mountains, which are in the west of Ferelden. aren't they? So where exactly are the Avvar barbarians from? Are they from the Free Marches? Are they from west of the Frostback Mountains (the Dales?) did they exist in both regions of the world and only survived in Ferelden?

Are they an offshoot of the ancestors of the Fereldens or not? WEre the Alemarri from North of Ferelden too?

The Avaar are mentioned in Awakening too and some appear to have lived in the area of Vigil's Keep. This would make sense as it was the first point of call if they took ship south from the Freemarches. Those who didn't flee south would have been enslaved by Tevinter, although small pockets would probably have remained in the hill and mountains. The various Barbarian tribes probably assimilated one another, through conquest and capture of women, until the strongest group remained and it is their name that is chiefly remembered. The bloodlines of all the various barbarian tribes are probably represented in the people of modern day Ferelden.

i'm pretty sure the avaar are some sort of analogue for native americans, in that they were a people native to a given area, that they were largely pushed out of those areas, and have only small pockets of community left.

I'm sure that's happened more than once in history, so it might be an analogue for that as well, but native americans sprang to mind first.

Avvars, Alamarri, and Chasind all descend from the same group. The Avvars migrated northwest (Frostbacks), the Chasind migrated south (Kocari Wilds), and the Alamarri settled in the bannorn eventually becoming Fereldans.

I'd consider the Avvars as more an analogue for the pagan Germanic tribes of the Early Middle Ages, if anything.  (Edit: Wiki mentions them as perhaps insipred by the Celts.  Makes sense, but I think there's elements of both).

I also remember a codex of some kind or another mentioning that the Avvars at some point reached Ferelden from the west (kind of the only way to get there, but..) crossing the Frostbacks.

Initially thought that Free Marchers and Fereldens were of the same "stock", but then I recalled that the precursors of the Free Marches were a tribe called the Planacene. Not sure what their relation to the Avvars is, if anything at all.

They also have a bit of Scandinavian in there as well. They've got a god called Hakkon and their clan leaders are Jarls.

EDIT: I was a bit confused to find out that they lived in the Free Marches as it was already established that another tribe lived there but maybe these are guys left over from Andraste's push north?

I really hope we get to see more of them in future, preferably in the shape of a follower or as a starting point in the game if they decide to bring origins back.

There are also Avvar tribes in the Frostback Mountains in Ferelden.

I was just reading about the Avvar/Alamarri/Chasind and that confused me as well. The entries don't seem to indicate they should be in the Free Marches...
