Yes I have saved them both for different game play experience etc, but I wish that you didn't have to lose a team member on Virmire period.

Shep isnt Superman. He has to fail every once in a while to maintain his uber-soldier status. Just look at Arrival for one of the best examples besides Virmire.

I have all combinations- MShep saved unromanced Ash, MShep saved romanced Ash, MShep saved Alenko, FShep saved romanced Kaidan, FShep saved Ash...only one missing is FShep saving unromanced Alenko, but I'll get around to it.

I also have sacrificed my romanced companion on Virmire for added pathos.

out of my like 5 shepards I can recall from 1 I saved Kaidan 3 out of 5 times. I prefer him even though I play as a male shep. I just like how he's quiet and the only other male human squadmate not to mention the only member of your squad that was with you from the very beginning.

In 5 playthroughs so far I've saved Ashley 4 times andCarth (Kaidan) once with my FemShep as an LI.

Doing a current playthrough with MaleShep who has Ashley as LI, so she will be saved.

First time I saved Ash, even if my LI was Liara. I choose to build different characters. Here's my list:

MaleShep, Renegade, saves Kaiden (because he is the only real team member)
FemShep, Paragon, saves Ash (I simply like her, and a female Shep can't let her die)
FemShep Paragade, saves again Ash

I think a Renegade, human orineted ruthless Shepard must save Ash too, because there's a common between them: both hat/unlike aliens. Kaiden is much more adaptable character, he hated aliens, but learned not all them evil.

If I ever had a say in redoing ME1, I would redo the Virmire mission by incorporating a greater tactical/RTS element into the mission, where you have greater say and more flexible in destroying Saren's main base of operations. So you can actually feel like COMMANDER Shepard, an Alliance officer who must decide the best course of action in any given tactical situation, with the responsibility of the crew and the mission.
And, during the mission, you have the opportunity to save both Ash and Kaidan if you play your hand right, picking the right course of action. However, this would still come with a cost...such as Kirrahe and his entire STG unit.

I for one would save both Ash and Kaidan in a heartbeat. The sound files already exist for it!!!

On my first playthrough I saved Kaidan because my Femshep romanced him and I wanted to see things through with that. But the reality is, I will always save Kaidan no matter what because after finding out about Ashley's blatant contempt for aliens, I just cannot bring myself to save her. When I play as a maleshep and want to romance someone in ME1, it'll be Liara (love her!).

Hmm, honestly I only ever saved the one I sent to back up the Salarian STGs oddly enough, I always did try to save the most number of lives I could. Though, after finding out about Ashley's death wish...well, I'm a bit of sadist at times and so I would I save her so that she could live and work off that issue. Kaiden's a bro, and he's one who had made peace with himself...and suffers crippling migraines, the choice was easy.
