To the above poster who was joking about how all Bioware fans like insane characters well- most of our characters in our game have gone through very traumatic and interesting times and have made bad choices just like anyone IRL could. The thing to remember, I suppose is that everyday "sane" people make stupid choices all of the time or say the wrong things or react badly occasionally. Our crew in DA2 for example- most of them have suffered.

It was just a terrible way for me to remember DA2. A game that I already thought was only OK, and it was dragged down further.

I know, I know. I realize he’s popular, but allow me to
explain.
First off, I have never played the Dragon Age games before
just last week. But last week I was at the store looking for a used game, and I
saw Dragon Age 2 just sitting on the shelf – all by its lonesome. I knew
nothing about the game – I bought it on a whim. And I played it through in a
short matter of time. (I’m assuming most players do so they can replay and
choose different options.)
When I started the game, I didn’t read up on it. I just went
into it blindly. After figuring out the whole mage vs. templar thing upon, I decided
to oppose the mages just to make the story interesting. (Typically, I’d be the
big hippie in a game but this time I figured I’d switch it up.)
Low and behold, Fenris approaches (post Bait and Switch) and
our friendship was maxed out before the first Act was over. I can’t remember when
we had sex. Second act? I forgot. There was a lot of demon-slaying mixed in
there, along with witty NPC banter and flagrant eye strain.
However, since he was the only character maxed out, I figured
I’d pursue him. (Although, I later came to learn that you could romance your rivals.)
Bottom line: Fenris carried my a** through that game. I was
very thankful for him.
That little NPC carried both my character and *me* – the
player. As far as my character was concerned, she loved him and he loved her
and they had something special – blah blah. He ended up wearing a red wrist
band and vowed his loyalty to her (despite his emo crap). They spoke before the
final battle, unlocking the romance achievement. So… he was my “first” so to
speak.
As far as from a player’s standpoint – Fenris saved my game
multiple times in battle. I maxed out his abilities for a two handed weapon as
well as the lyrium-based moves. Often times, my entire party, including Hawke, died
on the battlefield fighting particularly hard enemies. And all too often, Fenris
had to run around taking enemies down all by himself. The first time this
happened, I thought: “This little dude is f***ed.”
But no.
He fought off that high dragon and its minions – totally
solo. My other people were dead within minutes. I have no idea why that
character was so tough and strong, but it must have been a clever (and
accidental) combination, on my part, of moves/abilities, armour, and weaponry.
I will always advise players to keep Fenris in their party
for as long as humanly possible. He will save your a** in some of the hardest
of fights. Not to say other NPC’s aren’t as strong, but since I played the game
like an aggressive, mage-hating jacka** - Fenris was all I had. (I basically
lost my entire family and my mage friends hated me. Anders totally bailed. Can’t
say I blamed the poor bastard.) It was amusing that I ended up with Fenris – a
character none too short on damaged goods. Sexy damaged goods, though. I won’t
lie.
Anders of course was a no-win. He just washed his hands of
me. Bethany died. Carver died. (Oh and my mom died – life’s so awesome, right?)
Hawke's character pretty much ended up with f*ck all in the end. But Fenris was
always there, saving her butt each time. And Merrill annoyed me, though I put
her in my party because, like Varric, she had range attacks that were a perfect
combo for my Hawke warrior and Fenris.
On a personal note, Fenris reminded me of myself (a little). I’m jaded and estranged from family. (I know
a few relatives who sold me out and sure, I’d like to put my fist through
them.) Also, another crazy thing – he looked exactly like (minus the ears and
markings) an ex-boyfriend. Weird.
So yeah. Hands down. He was a true character and a true
favorite. I assume he won’t be in the third installment. But I hope there’s
someone else just as wicked – and as helpful – as Fenris.

DA2 just isn't the same without him, and even when I'm playing as a rogue, including an archer rogue, I still have Varric around.
Aveline is a close second, as I like a lady in uniform and she makes my Hawkes feel safe and protected.
Isabela is the one that my Hawkes usually romance, but she's a melee rogue, and thus a liability on the battlefield, which means that she doesn't see much combat in my playthroughs. If I could only give her a bow...

If the romance option were removed: Varric. I mean, we wouldn't even have a game without Varric telling us about it!
