Anyone here a fan of strategy RPGs like Ogre Battle, Fire Emblem, Disgaea ect?

Curious if anyone excited for the new 3DS Fire emblem.

Also anyone know of any good Strategy RPGs that are under the radar?

I love SRPGs. Final Fantasy Tactics is one of my all time favorites. And loved the updated Tactics Ogre they put out this year for the PSP. The NIS games like Disgaea are also great timewasters.

It seems like the PSP is becoming a great home them in general. Valkyria Chronicles II was fun there. Better gameplay than the first game on the PS3, though not as good storywise.

Huge fan of them. I've been one since the original Shining Force for the Genesis. Those that have a Wii can download SF and SF2 - worth every penny. They're also available on Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection for the Xbox and PS3. The GBA remake of the original Shining Force is also great, with added chapters and characters.

I actually only got a Wii to play FE: Radiant Dawn. And apparently I'll now have to look into a 3DS. Sigh.

Under the radar... hmm.... Rondo of Swords for the DS was a little different, but good. Others to look into, if you can find them:

Vandal Hearts 1 and 2 for the ps1, haven't played the newer one, Flames of Judgement or whatever it was called...is it any good?

Suikoden Tactics for the PS2, especially if you're a fan of the main series.

Wow, I now have an urge to go fire up the ol' PS2.

Dragon Force on the Sega Saturn was amazing. It wasn't as deep as Final Fantasy Tactics, but I liked getting to choose from a cast of several protagonists. It was like the JRPG equivalent of different origin stories--except plot points remained relevant through the story for every character. The poster boy never felt central if I picked someone else. It had wonderful music too.

Unfortunately an updated version only released in Japan. The Saturn version can get expensive.

Another good strategy RPG was Black Matrix. Unfortunately none of the games in that series made it over here. I imagine it was due to the plot's religious themes putting off publishers.

Finally, there was the hybrid monster that was the Sakura Taisen series. One part strategy RPG, one part dating sim, with each plot chapter divided as if it were the episode of an anime. Ridiculous as it sounds it somehow worked. Both elements were entertaining and played off each other nicely. Unfortunately only Sakura Taisen V released here as Sakura Wars: So Long, My Love on my Playstation 2 and Wii. Then again I suppose one is better than none as was the case with Black Matrix. This game is not obscure at all in Japan, but it's about as under the radar as it gets in America and Europe.

Ah, how I miss my old import gaming days...

I had no idea this genre even existed.

I will have to look into some of these, as I'm a fan of both strategy games and RPGs. The only game I was previously aware of that is a sort of blend of strategy and RPG is the game Kenshi, which is currently still in development.

I love this stuff, I got a ton of them:

Final Fantasy Tactics (PS1/PSP) (same team as Tactics Ogre)
Spectral Souls (PSP)
Spectral Force 3 (Xbox 360)
Trinity Universe (PS3)
Record of Agarest War (PS3/Xbox 360)
Record of Agarest War 2 (PS3/Xbox 360)
Growlanser Generations (PS2)*
Generation of Chaos (PSP)
Rondo of Swords (DS)
Luminous Arc (DS)
Luminous Arc 2 (DS)

Growlanser is rare now and if you don't have a system that can play it... Yeah, that sucks. But the game includes two games out of the series and I thought they were very good.

Rondo of Swords is awesome, you run through enemies to attack them. And there are ways to exploit the system. It is possible to kill every single enemy on the first map which is obviously made to be done on New Game+. The game is actually a bit on the difficult side, but if you got the right strategy there's nothing you can't get through.

Also, killing every enemy on the first map means the main character is at a much higher level than the others, approximately level 30 if I recall correctly. There's a couple cameos from the developer's other games: Izuna and Shino from Izuna: Legend of the Unemployed Ninja. There's also the token beast girl.

I haven't played either Luminous Arc games, but I wish I could find them.

That's all I can think of, if I can think of more I'll let you know.

 HAMMER AND SICKLE!!!
Best "Tactical RPG" ever, and if there was ever a game under the radar, this is it. Look at how sparse the Wikipedia article is. It supposedly got poor reviews, but don't let that dissuade you, it's amazing.

Final Fantasy Tactics, one of my all-time favorite games, introduced me to the tactical RPG genre. I haven't played many tactical/strategy RPGs, but the ones that I have played include Fire Emblem, X-COM, Disgaea (I enjoy the humor of the series), Jeanne d'Arc, and Valkyria Chronicles. My friend loved importing video games, and he always told me about Sakura Taisen, but I never got the chance to play any of the series.

Turn based strategy games plus strategy RPGs are two of my favorite genres. The remaining favorites is cPRG followed by aRPG. I do like adventure titles like the old Broken Sword series too though I will admit. All of those listed just now are in fact pretty much only genres I do play with some (very rare) exceptions. So rare it would be along the lines of it would be only maybe 1 or 2 titles a year that are not strategy RPG, turn based strategy, cRPG/aRPG or adventure.

I enjoy them (although most are strictly speaking tactics rather than Strategy)
Favourites are Vandal Hearts, Dragon Force, Sakura Wars: So Long My Love, Front Mission 3, Shining Force 3 (part 1), Super Robot Taisen: Original Generation

Good ones under the radar? -I'm not certain what is on your radar - maybe Ring of Red, Mystaria, Soul Nomad and the World Eaters

Fire Emblem. I love almost everything about the series and the characters in it, which makes things all the sadder when you goof up and one of them gets killed.

My only problem with the Valkyria Chronicles original game is that it relies to much on speedy runs to get through each level with max xp, I haven't beat the original Valkyria Chronicles yet...

Jeanne d'Arc on the PSP is very good and King Arthur: The Roleplaying Wargame is decent. The latter has a mix of individual character customization for knights and quests with Total War style battles.

I just got finished playing 12 hours of Alpha Centauri non-stop. Where did the day go? Point is, Alpha Centauri is fantastic. Time vampire though. And I don't think it's very similar to Ogre Battle or Fire Emblem, if my memory serves me correctly.

I used to really like Final Fantasy Tactics when I was younger, though the level scaling for random encounters in that game was incredibly annoying. I also enjoy the Disgaea series, plus the spin offs like Makai Kingdom and La Pucelle.

Isn't Alpha Centauri the Civilization 2 in the space? How much great it is? describe a little.

I forgot about Jeanne d'Arc!  I can't believe I forgot about it.

I loved it.  The frog from Rogue Galaxy was back.

The only thing I didn't like is you couldn't go to past areas.  So, I did what I do in Fire Emblem and other games like that: Jeanne I killed whatever enemies I could, so she was a veritable powerhouse.  Then the stones, I gave her offensive stones and that just made her god-like.  I loved the transformation system and got it to where Jeanne could stay transformed for longer than the other characters, or at least more often.
