Also, Garrus' life hasn't been that bad at all.

Recently it has.  He only just lost ten of his closest friends, and the eleventh may be dead or alive depending on your actions.  And then there's the backroom drama, the stuff he hides--his family is poor, he's a disappointment to his father, he's not good enough to meet his own enormous expectations, he has to lie to his own sister to cover up who he's become, and his mom is in constant pain from her disease.  He tries to make things better, to do good, to fight the people no one else has the courage or strength to fight, and either he screws it up or the people that are supposed to help him screw him over.

If you have too many people you care about die in your life, you stop caring at all.  It's a horrible feeling, a toxic apathy that drains the life out of you.

Garrus is a compelling character because of his passion.  If he loses that, he'll just be some whiny emo wisecracker with no fire, no drive to do good and fight bad guys.  Take away his family--one of the few good, personal things he has left--and what's the point?  He'll stop the Reapers, sure, but when the smoke clears and refugees are reuniting with one another, what's left for him?  What reason is there to stick around, to care?

It's wrong if the only way to keep him alive is to kill his spirit.  Let the poor bastard have something to look forward to when the fighting's over.

Finally, you've managed to come up with the beginnings of a well written story.

His sister would stay alive in the first two options, purely for the dramatic purposes of either thanking him for coming or word-strangling him for taking so long and letting whoever died die. Obviously, she's not alive in the third option, which just has Garrus tragically falling to his knees and blaming himself followed by a paragon interrupt.

Never seen it put like that.

From the outside looking shallow, Garrus seems to have an alright life compared to say Kaidan or Ash or etc, etc., etc. But when you look into it, his life sucks massive quad, all taken into consideration.

His squad on Omega wasn't just some military unit of grunts either. They were together for nearly 2 years, cleaning up Omega, likely having drinks together, sleeping in makeshift beds in the alleys, working together to make it a happier place.

They never even put a dent in the crime of that pisshole.

I think the grimdark babies craving orgies of slaughter and rape in Mass Effect should go to bed so they can grow up and become normal people who does not need constant injections of emotional pain to validate their own existence. Are you listening, guys? You are allowed to enjoy things because they are happy and not soulwreckingly horrifying.

There there, don't cry tears of molten blood just because I used the word "happy". Everything will be alright.

Last week we were supposedly the ones that didn't have anything bad happen to us in our lives, which was why we apparently sought to compensate for that shortcoming through videogames.

Now, which is it? At the very least try to remain consistent.

I'm not sure where you're getting that inconsistency from. I've always had this stance. As for that post, it was more a poking joke than anything else.

But to adress the issue seriously: Yes, grimdark babies are normal people with first world problems who play video games and watch movies and read books to satisfy a suffering quota, and when the work in question lacks the suffering they desire, they ask for it because they want or need it. That's a grimdark baby in a nutshell.

People use this to deal with inadequacies in real life because, hey, nothing is more uplifting than watching someone else having a worse life than you, right? And there's nothing worse than seeing someone happier than you, correct?

It's really nothing more than victimless schadenfreude.

On the flipside, people like me derive their catharsis from being able to do some good for people. That, when it's all over, I can tell myself, "No one died. Everyone is safe. Everyone is ok."

There's really nothing wrong with either side as long as there's some choice involved. Thankfully, BioWare's games are exclusively known for their extensive choices, and I think it is good that the sadistic, "pragmatic" renegade choices exist even though I do not agree with them.

The reason why I'm addressing the grimdark babies is because their desire to inflict pain upon fictional characters (and as an extension, themselves, if that is to be believed) is so far gone that they want the element of choice removed. They want mandatory deaths, because they feel their catharsis is lessened because it is avoidable.

This is, in my opinion, f***ing ridiculous.

It was said by the same guy who claimed turians invented the genophage and that we would be able to import dead Shepards in ME3.

By whom?

We are going to fkin Palaven. Not spotting a female there is unavoidable.

They brought kids into the game, kids haven't been shown in ME1 or 2. Turian wimin isn't out of the question.

Garrus is already a tragedy magnet. I think we should get to meet his sister and she survives no matter what, just to give the poor bastard a break.

True enough.

Seems like anytime Bioware says: "We need to screw somebody over.... reaaallly hurt them, you know? I'm talking fudge them up royally - baseball bat to the face, knees and groin..... So... who should we use for this dramatic, tragic moment in the game?"

*momentary pause around committee table*

"Garrus?"

*vigorous head nods and mumbles of approval around the table*

:innocent:

Sad thing is.. this is 100000% true...

They screw over Garrus by almost getting him killed and him and that thing with Sidonis..
Poor Garrus... I bet he regrets being a turian..
I don't think Bioware likes turians.. :( ; Garrus in that matter.

I'd prefer it if Garrus makes Shepard promise him to save his sister no matter what before the mission, and during it Shep is forced to choose between the lives of said sister and Garrus.

Why?  Because you want to see me b*tch and moan about being forced into killing my space husbando?

That's your sole purpose in life, isn't it?  ISN'T IT, KAISER?!

How about we try to save all the Turians except just Garrus' family because that would be biased. (Just telling)

I support lower-middle class Vakarian family trying to get by in society. Even little miss Tali is a Quarian princess.

Face it, Garrus is a total badass, but he is a poor Turian and his rebillious and undisciplined actions wouldn't get him far on Palaven. It wouldn't make sense for him to be some the son of some sort of Monarch.

Wasn't his father a pretty big name in C-SEC, I doubt he was too poor.

Not literally poor. What Zak meant was that he's a lousy turian.

I don't know, the vast majority of your squadmates have issues, man. >_>

Kaidan and Ashley were pretty drama-free...

But they're cool, too, and I shall not inflict horrors upon them.

Other than Mandatory Phoenix Armor Mondays, but I do that to everyone.

Ash has the entire family "curse", Virmire, E.Prime; Kaidan has his entire biotic training and a few other things, like his son becoming a Sith. >_>

The person with the fewest issues is probably Kasumi, and you will not harm her. :bandit:

We don't know that much about Kasumi, the only thing about her past we get to know is that her boyfriend was murdered

He was a good cop, but I doubt he got paid much (seriously, cops aren't rich), and the game hints he's retired now.  Plus Mrs. Vakarian can't work due to her illness.  Which would mean they rely entirely on government support, their savings, and any income Sol and Garrus can provide.

BW said the turians are on the moon so I can't go to Palvin like I hoped unless we get a mission sending us there but even then I doubt I'll see the beach like scenery that we got on Virmire sense Garrus said the planet was the closets to home he's seen. I however would like to cure his mom or even attend her funeral with Garrus. I'm mad he didn't say anything at all about this in 2 I thought we were friends!

I'm hoping he's waiting around to mention it in 3 and its an optional side mission (that doesn't kill/save garrus if you do/don't do it BW) if you say you'll help but don't go once the game gets to midgame point she'll die and he'll request again that you go to where ever she is so they can bury her.

I would like the drug company you invested in to actually do something here if you did invest you've got an experimental drug that after she receives it she'll start to actually show positive signs of recovery but if you didn't invest you have nothing to offer the family when you go to see her in hospital and she'll die not long after you come or midgame which ever comes first.

Seeing a Turian funeral would be neat to see how another culture does something. I'd like to also be present when the Quarians throw a party when they get Rannoch back but thats a whole nother thread subject.

Garrus's dad should also be there causing issues for Garrus and you if you're his friend (mshep) and causing really big trouble if you're his LI (fshep). We know he's racist against humans and has issues with spectors and I really would hate if he just let you walk in a-ok.

Seeing his sister would be neat too if she's the only turian female we see in game this would make sense to do it here because she's related to Garrus and could help move the story along as well.

Seeing Garrus' sister and mother would involve seeing a female turian. I won't get my hopes up.
