Conflict and turmoil have come to a once protected land...

I have begun work on a new adventure, which will tie into the Edinmoor campaign. The reason for this, is that I would like to have something out on the Vault again and people playing reasonably soon. The sequel that I started at the end of last year, Sons of Edinmooris a larger scale project and will easily take me a year to complete. This new venture, however, I am hoping to put together over the next few months especially with the holidays approaching, and have something early next year.

For a while now, I have been intrigued by the idea of an arena concept for a party of characters. That is, a series of encounters designed to test a low level team and present challenge after challenge as they advance further.

Now this will still be enveloped in an over-arching story. I like writing dialogues and NPC interactions. The conversations will all be Party Chat style, only I will not go into as much depth for this adventure.

I'm planning to take a starting party and progress them to level 9. At which point, these characters would be eligible to be imported into the Sons of Edinmoor.

For  Broken Vessels the player will find him or herself waking up in a prison, in a foreign land. There is upheaval alluded to at the end of Edinmoor, and this will be the story about characters who have been captured and taken away. It is very much a struggle involving the escape from captivity, a desperate fight for survival.

The battles are being carefully designed to feature enemy parties. I am not haphazardly placing down goblins and kobolds or other creature blueprints. Each monster will be class specific. As you will see in the screenshots below, there are goblin Mages and Fighters; kobold Wizards and kobold Rogues using slings, with the appropriate Weapon Focus feats. The idea is that these enemies are meant to be the player's equal, or tougher. There will be monster Clerics, Rangers, Barbarians, Sorcerers, etc. all growing stronger as the characters rise in level.

Players will have to rely on monster drops for their equipment, and the occasional found items. This is hostile territory, and there are no friendly shop keepers around.

The exterior area uses JasonNH's Desert Canyon pre-fab. I seem to have done well using his pre-fabs.

Build a party of rag-tag hapless adventurers, and then fight for your freedom.

Harumph!

I am reminded of the gladiatorial arena on Athas and the subsequent escape of the adventuring party in Dark Sun: Shattered Lands. I am definitely looking forward to seeing this.

Thanks, PJ. Definitely I am channeling the 6 person party influence of Baldur's Gate, Icewind Dale, and the Gold Box games.

And, yes, much influnce from Dark Sun: Shattered Lands, dunniteowl. The rest-restricted campfires I use are an homage to that game design, and the escape from slavery fits the feel I am going for. Great games, Shattered Lands and Wake of the Ravager.

kamal, did you use this pre-fab in Path of Evil? I remember when JasonNH made this a few years ago, and always thought it was an excellent location, especially for setting up encounters.

Just wanted to add, the SoZ beeding and death system apply, as usual. I had a lot of fun testing with a 1st level party. Even the lowly party members have important roles, the mage casting Daze or Acid Splash were life savers when no one had any weapons yet! And the cleric's Bless and Cure Light Wounds were never more welcome.

Also, although I use the term "Arena", I am envisioning this adventure to span several areas. The canyon alone will probably get players up into level two, before they can travel to different environments.

Yes, I used it as a canyon system outside a desert town.

Heh, maybe some of that Hall of Fame charm wil rub off on me! I've got a few twists and turns and ideas to fill out those nooks and crannies, so hopefully players won't mind.

Edinmoor: Broken Vessels? Since you say it ties in, giving the new project's name an Edinmoor connection might be nice.

I love the prison-break story opening and I also like that you have given attention to different classes within races. The dialogue looks very interesting too.

Done!

Chronologically, this would fit in about a year after the events of Edinmoor but with brand new starting characters. It would take place just prior to The Sons of Edinmoor uprising.

What I have in mind is that players can import their party from the end of the first adventure, or they can use a party they have built up to level 9 through Broken Vessels . Either path would approach the sequel to the campaign differently.

And thank you, Mr. Rieder. Eventually the party will work their way up to blasting orc Wizards, and orc Monks, and other diverse critters. All the combats will be preceded by text, with an opportunity for party members to try to get more information or make a role-playing declaration, or sometimes point out a tactical observation. (The Rogue in the player's party noting that the enemy has rogues among their ranks as well.)

Just for the hell of it, here's a link to the old Sons of Edinmoor thread, to recap the progress I had made earlier this year.

There were some lofty design aspirations for that project, and I expect to rsume in 2012.

Sounds cool, reminds me of the second Conan Chronicles module, though that one was solo. I also recognize that canyon in PoE.

Yes, that is a good way to characterize the design intent od this adventure: tactical combat against enemy parties. And while most encounters will feature diverse opponents, there will also be some homogenous groups such as fighting a party of 6 magic-users or 6 clerics. Just to mix things up.

Arkalezth, I haven't played the Conan Chronicles mods, but I know they have been highly rated. I imagine they deal with a brutal landscape and survivalist themes. That sounds about right for what I have planned. I would think Barbarians would be a welcome addition to any player's party.

Yes, absolutely. I feel lost without someone scratching themselves, belching, or chewing on a raw leg of god knows what in the party.

Right. We musn't underestimate the entertainment value of having a Barbarian in the party.

All right, here's a little update. And a little advice, don't let your cleric get knocked out in battle. As far as building, I'm hoping to get a lot done this month. We'll see how that goes.

Moving on to 2nd level Kobold Warlocks...

Yeah, some folks would rather live with the status quo. "Heh. It ain't so bad. We get fed such that we ain't starving and the beatings are only a few minutes of each day. You goody two boots, with yer swords and all, are just going to make things rougher when you leave. They'll take out their frustration on us, and who could blame them? They won't have you to kick around, so we'll be their scapegoats and, honestly, why would you bother making things worse for us like that?"

Heaven forfend they should run when they have the chance.

dno
(wondering how much 'real life' attitude there is in that whole thing?)

Yes, that's about the gist of it. There are unquestionably those who would choose to live in slavery rather than die fighting for their freedom.

It's a theme that runs through the Edinmoor campaign.

It's really not the beatings as much as the poorly crafted puns and flatulence.... that is the true horror of kobold servitude.

This one's for kamal_

Surely, you didn't think the kobolds were the ones to administer the beatings!

Nevertheless, your "How hard could a kobold possibly beat you" comment is now a dialogue option.
