Merrill is expressive and, at times, emotional and empathic. Lots of people (adults) are. Some people get misty-eyed at movies, or when their friends lovingly talk about cheese. It happens. That doesn't make someone like a child.seraphymon wrote...
You are all acting like i cant tell the difference from how she acts within her clan and outside of it. Im well aware of it,but she still acts like a child, having nothing to do with her being not or out of her element. Its the tone and expressions and how she goes about things. She whines and cries in both areas, when she doesnt get what she wants. Even in her clan she acts very differently than in DAO, this being outside the fact that she is personally almost at war within her own clan in DA2. She is much like a child in alot of ways, the VA for her didnt help this case nor does the cartoonish art style.
And I don't recall any whining. Well, maybe from Carver...
I'm not even going to comment on the art style because there are other threads and countless pages of posts that cover that.

Trying to call what she does as justifiable is like pissing on my back and calling it rain. Its whiny, maybe not in the same way as carver, or even as much or obvious, but how you express those things says something to other peoples minds.

Hawke haters are as pathetic as the Grey Warden worshippers... Wait...
...how?
Actually, I hate Hawke and dislike the Grey Wardens at the same time.
HeheI hate Hawke and I love all my Wardens. Now I am pathetic because Teddie Sage said so.
Not that I care what he thinks of me...
Of course you are!
Dude, I'm being sarcastic there. I just hate when people keep bragging about their hatred. (Hypocritical much? Teddie, you keep saying how much you hate Sebastian... But shhhhh...) Moooooooove on. I'd love to come on the DA2 boards and being able to read the news and the comments without ever seeing those rude ones. But hey... it's total chaos here, nothing we can do about it.

Again, this is a matter of opinion. I don't see Merrill as childlike...simply put. I see someone who is awkward in certain situations, is driven in her goals (perhaps quite narrow in her focus), and who, on all other counts, is a pretty darn loyal friend. If most of your issue is due to the elf design, ok, that's one thing. But I can't correlate her character to that of a child.

What does she even do that's 'whiny' and 'not justifiable'?

The elf design like i said is only 1 reason, more like the icing on the cake. because to me she is the most childlike, in almost every aspect, and again this is outside her awkwardness. Is she a child no, nor would i say she is the same as some of the NPC children we meet, but not far off either i would say. Versus DAO where her traits are mostly the same i wouldnt consider her childlike nor act like it.

I'm willing to bet that if Merrill was a Morrigan-like character she wouldn't get called "stupid ****". She'd just be a ****. Trololo

Well gee, let's divorce you from everything and everyone you know and place you in a completely alien enviroment filled with people who have very little, if anything, in common with you and have a good portion of those people hate you just for being who you are. Then we'll see how well you adjust and act.

Relatively large eyes are indeed a trait you'll observe in human children, as well as some other features and the frail, long-limbed frame that's also typical for teens. If anything, it's the supposed kid in that bottom picture that doesn't show too many cues about his age, mainly thanks to his Jay Leno chinMr.House wrote...

I beg to differ, with the way she looks, talks, and acts sometimes. All she does is remind me of a child, unlike her DAO self.
Ya she's a child all right <_<
Merrill's naive attitude doesn't help in that regard, either.

Wasnt this her choice in the first place? In any case I surely wouldnt act like she does. Yes there would be awkwardness, but like i say again im not counting that against her.

It was her choice to leave what was basically her family to follow her own path (not a trait I'd assign to a child).
I'll ask again, how does she act that is 'childlike'?

Not really. It was a consequence of her choice. She chose to pursue blood magic and the eluvian in an attempt to regain lost knowledge of the elves. The consequence was that she was exiled from her clan. Her conviction and, dare I say maturity, caused her to keep focused on her goal. Given the threat of being kicked out of their home and losing all contact with their former life, most children would cave.
And no, I would imagine you would act much like Merrill. Awkward, oblivious of local customs, ignorant of what would be common knowledge to everyone around you.

Yes really. other thigns are act of consequence, but she wasnt banished, she didnt have to go to kirkwall, She was only banished years later in act 3. You can call it conviction and focused on her task, but its also ignorance and unqillingless to listen to her own people, which i call immature.
You cant tell me how i would or wouldn't act. Dont pressume to know that. Would there be akwardness, or oblviouness, yes, but its how i deal with those situations which make me different. Ive been in those type of situations as it is, and i never acted like she did.

I meant that as a reply to zan asking about being ripped away and placed somewhere else, not in reference in her choice to follow her own path.

For the record I'm glad they went with in-game Merrill instead of the more risque 'Morrigan 2.0' concept art Merrill. That doesn't really fit her character IMO. Which says nothing about Morrigan 2.0's or Merrill's relative 'maturity level,' unless wearing risque clothing and a look of disdain automatically = mature now.

why should she listen to them when she's the one following the mantra of the Dalish? Restoring any Elven lore they come across.
If anything, they should be listening to her.

Cause evidently she ended up being wrong? The keeper obviously knew of the danger and tried to warn her her countless times. But no she just had to pull off a "opening pandoras box thing" Merril doesnt even have any facts that even if she did succeed that it would reveal any lore forgotten.
