Try logging the face texture you want to change and see if the names match maybe your game is loading a different file? Its all I can think of.

Alright it's not your pack that's wrong it's mine >_>

I seem to be building the package wrong. The texture works fine in logging but I seem to be doing somthing wrong when it comes to making the .tpf file.

Sadly I've got the same problem.

Running Texmod as Admin on Win7x64
Using LAA on masseffect.exe
Bioengine.ini modified

Still won't work.
What am I doing wrong!?

Ok try not running as admin, and allow TexMod as an exception for any antivirus programs you have running. Also you need more than 2 gigs of ram to use the full pack or you will get this error. I see that pack is old try the new one updated 033112, or wait a few days as I'm almost done with the latest full pack which aims to use less resources while maintaining the same quality. I will most likely upload it this weekend.

Files with new format uploaded, along with a few tweaks to Saren's armor and the Normandy which are now 4096x4096 to get better and clearer detail, do-able to the low file size of png.

Total tpf size decreased by around 70 megs, however when the files are unpacked they were 1.07gigs in bmp format and now 406mb with the png format. So I'm hoping this will free up resources and allow more people to use the full pack without crashes. Also I hope it improves performance.

Hello all,

I've done some research into bmp vs png and was aware of the "loss-less" compression of png and therefor made the switch in format, bu I have just read that a png uses the same amount of RAM when loaded as a bmp .:( Can anyone confirm this? If this is the case I am going to have to use a mix of dds and jpeg to get this pack to work for everyone. :P

Any advice and or knowledge would be appreciated. My goal is to have users with a 32-bit OS be able to run the full pack with no crash.

I am trying to convert my .bmps to .dds but I am getting green square artifacts in dark areas and distortion on straight lines :(

Have a look at these programs, fly.to/mwgfx/ specifically DTXBmp (under Graphics Tools menu, or go here CFS/FS Graphics Programs), I use it with corel draw an it works pretty good.  It may help you resize your files.  There is also a who bunch of utilities there that might help as well.

Just a thought.

Also some other thoughts, have you tried changing the DPI and shrinking the texture so that it is small with a higher dpi not sure but it is worth a try.

Also maybe some of the type of the texture don't have to be as large, like the light map ones, or the Black and White ones.  I would test and see if that is a good trade off as far as quality.

Thanks this is very helpful. I currently located all files with no alpha channels and will use jpeg format along with increasing the dpi to achieve an optimal balance. I will attempt to do the same with the alpha channel textures and dxt in the same fashion but so far dxt has been a real let down I don't know how JeanLuc got such great results with it even with 2048x2048 (no artifacting etc...).

Maybe that program will help, not sure but that is what I use and I like it. It does have resize and format change options but you know more about the channels/file types then I do.

Maybe you could ask JeanLuc maybe he knows something we don't.

By the way I am not sure if the dpi will help or hurt so you should test it.

This is one of the 2 or 3 mods on the board, thanks for doing all this work. Pretty much going to do a new run partly because of this.

Just so you know I can't get to you new file, get this message.

[The file you are trying to view (FullPack042012 - FullPack042012.zip) uploaded by CDAMJC is currently awaiting authorisation. Authorisation can take a couple of days during which time a site administrator will check the file to ensure:]

Don't know if you are aware of that. Maybe that is how that site works and I just have to wait. :)

Yeah I am just waiting authorization, but the individual files work. I noticed the mods load maybe 30% faster performance seemed the same for me once in game but I think it's still using the same RAM once the png's are unpacked from the tpf(s), but I'm not sure.

And thank you for your support it's greatly appreciated :)

Thanks,

Looks like I need to use photo shop for decent dds conversion. I was proud how far Gimp took me but the Nvidia plug-in is for photo shop only so I guess i'll switch over :P. I was just stubborn and proud of my open source friend and was hoping to use it for the entire project.

If you don't want to spend the money DTXBmp and Corel Photo-Paint work pretty well.  I checked DTXBmp you can convert to a bunch of DXT types 1,3,5 and a bunch of other ones as well.  It also has a preview feature if you want to check them out first.  I didn't notice much of a difference between 5 and 3.

Yeah it's ok I have an old photo shop from college and the nvidia plugin is compatible with it. It allows you to get really good compression. I did try DTXBMP and the quality was not quite where I wanted it, but Photo shop seems to be working so far. Thanks again for the support. I should finish up reformatting by tonight and I'll test it tomorrow to see how it looks in game.

Well I have completed a dds and jpg reformat and tested extensively and I'm puzzled. The pack size shrunk to about 330 megs so I was optimistic. However, performance with the dds and jpg combo was terrible with large stutters and slow down. What's more is that in task manager it was using 3.7-3.8 gigs of ram!!. I tested 10 or more times to confirm. Then I went back to the png pack and it ran much smoother, and was using ~2.8 gigs of ram. Looks like TexMod is very png friendly so I think I'll stick with it, what a waste of a day haha :P. But at least I learned a little something about TexMod and performance with png vs dds.

Just grabbed it as soon as I saw that it was available. Again with the nice work! The game loads faster, everything still looks great (minus the random inability to correctly render text and interface elements, on occasion).

Excellent work. Thanks so much. :D

Thanks again for keeping your project going, and finding new and better ways to deliver your work.

And as a bonus, so far this update appears to have fixed the solid black hair and hair/face clipping issue I had been having since the last update.

Thanks for the updates and support :) I did a very through check/play through with the new files and all of the black texture issues should be gone, also since it's only using 2.8 gigs of ram users with windows 32-bit and 4 gigs or more of ram should be able to use the full pack with LAA applied allowing ~3.3 gigs of ram to the game, depending on the system this should allow playing with no crash (I hope).

Hi, I was playing me1 this last month with your mod, specifically FULLPACK033112, and I have to say u did an awesome job. Only I have some weird glitches with several turian medium armors, in with ultra-low tex is loaded for his armor, but negligible compared with all the otrer visual improvements.
But now, I can't use your newest pack. I'm running a windows 7 32 bit with 4Gb RAM, and now I can't load my savefiles ith this new pack. Seems I need even more ram than before.

I'm sorry to hear this. I tested the new pack as bmp files and found the same memory usage as with the new pngs, so I think the difference here is that I increased textures sizes of a few uniforms, saren, and the normady in the update. It must have pushed it passed the memory limit for your setup. I am working on a fix, or possibly I'll make another pack for lower-end and/or windows 32-bit setups.

Ok I've created a performance pack, all of my textures none are larger than 1024x1024 resolution. It loads really fast and the loss in quality from the original pack many may find negligible. I am uploading it to Moddb and it will need to be authoirized which can take 1-2 days, but anyone having crashes with the current pack due to windows 32-bit please try this pack.

I tracked the usage to 1.7-2.0 gigs of ram usage which is much lower than the 2.8-3.0 in the original pack. With LAA users of 32-bit windows should be able to use the pack with no crashes.

I will going forward host both the original highest quality pack and the new performance pack at Moddb so hopefully everyone can enjoy the mod :)

I'll try again with both new packs to check differences when I can download it.

And thank you again for all this awesome work!
