@Ghostwise ~ I tried SweetFX and the game always froze once I loaded a save.

SweetFX's working fine with ME1 for me - though I've yet to get a better understanding of what I can leave on in ME1 without overtaking SweetFX.

My current problem is just a basic "have TexMod run with ME1, using the Steam version of ME1".

It's just that I wasn't expecting it since the renaming trick worked fine with ME2 and I foolishly assumed ME1 would behave similarly. B)

@Ghostwise try to disable antivirus while running the game (it it works, then put texmod and the game exe to whitelist)

No joy - if I use TexMod then launch my Steam Mass Effect, I get the "Sh!t happened" error message. If I disguise TexMod as MassEffect.exe and used it to launch the actual game as MassEffectOriginal.exe, Steam aborts the launch as it sees that MassEffect.exe is already running.

At least, in the meanwhile, I've half-finished my various bits of tinkering to render the un-re-textured game as best as I can -- http://writeups.org/...Shepforced5.jpghttp://writeups.org/...Shepforced1.jpg .

On the gripping hand... mmm, I think I've found the problem - I'm an idiot. Gimme a sec.

As I suspected - it was because I had set MassEffect.exe to run in admin mode, since it suddenly refused working for no identifiable reason. Switching it back to the usual rights allowed for the usual renaming trick (TexMod as MassEffect.exe, MassEffect.exe as MassEffectOriginal.exe to work without conflict). The game still launches - I suppose it needed to be run in Admin mod just once to fix... whatever the issue was.

So, using my current rendering settings :

Left is the smooth-light-shiny default texture, middle and right are CDAMJC's face and clothing textures. The poor Maiden may need some sleep. ;)

And since I can't get much done today since I'm sick like a Quarian, here's a prepared screenshot of CDAMJC's Tali texture in the current big pack - taken in the Tantalus core engineering room.

Note that this shot has been through very basic re-processing (auto-levelling and my usual unsharpening mask).

Say, would you folks be aware of a version of Gibbed (or equivalent) that can edit the headmorph of a ME1 character in a ME1 game ?

Googling around is rather inefficient since most folks discuss editing ME1 saves in order to play ME2.

Thanks.

Makes sense. Oh well, it would just have been a few tweaks.

Since I've been doing some test screenshots lately, here's Liara about to hurl a biotic warp. The face model is CDAMJC's, though you can't really tell with the Dark Energy wreath. :-)

(More test shots using CDAMJC's Liara textures by clicking on the picture, though there are still older screenshots left too).

I've been trying and trying to get this mod working for hours and I keep getting the same message or worse a black screen. I've done and redone every step several times and simply can't understand what's wrong.. Here's the message I get: BIOG_HMM_ARM_MED_R.MEDa.Iconic.HMM_ARM_MEDa_Ico_Spwr_Stack
Help would be appreciated.

Black screen is what you should get, for a few minutes while the Textures are being loaded by TexMod.

That error message looks like something in the Biogame.ini might be messed up or some other game file.  It shouldn't be a result of the mod because it only requires bioengine.ini edits.

If you have steam try veryfying the games files. Otherwise maybe rebame the biogame.ini and run the game to see if a new one is generated.  That error seems to specify meshes which my mod doesn't alter, but the biogame.ini can be used to swap them (ie: to play as Saren etc...  So I'm thinking it's related to that, but it also could be a RAM limitation  which it is reached when loading those objects.

What are your system specs and OS, also is your copy steam, origin, didgital download, or disc?  With this info I'll see what else I can do for you.

Hey CDAMJC, have you been working on anything or been busy with real life stuff?

Well, took about a month off. Looking back on 2012 I only actually played 2 games, Deus Ex HR and Mass Effect 3, as a gamer I found that unacceptable so I've poured 180 hours into Skyrim and dozens into Rocksmith, games I've been meaning to get into for over a year. I spent so much time modding in 2012 I only played 2 games:P

So I guess you could say real life stuff? haha. But the past week I've been chipping away on my list and I hear news that Mass Effect 1 Explorer may be coming from Saltisgood through forum reading. It would be amazing as I love TexMod for allowing me to create this mod I also hate it for its glitches, High system requirements, and the workaround required to get it to work with Steam and Origin. With Mass Effect 1 explorer we wouldn't have the RAM limitations so if it is released I plan on doing environmental textures as well. The only reason I haven't is priority, I prefer to see the memory usage go towards great characters over pretty floors, but of course I'd love to have both :)

So no huge updates yet, I have finished Kaidan, the skins on female Shepard, and a small glitch on Saren's face where the metal pieces have a black shine from the spec map which I will upload soon. Still working on the hairs, and then the real pain Male Shepard customs. I want to use ME3 as bases but the format is different and I currently am severely struggling with seems. It's a bit infuriating but I'll keep trying.

Some progress this weekend:

Some pics showing I finally managed to get the male human skins working, a combo of Mass Effect 3's fine skin textures and some extra details and a ton of formatting by me. So now every NPC has a lot more detail making dialogue scenes much more enjoyable and immersive, in my opinion :). And a picture of my bro-Shep to show that the textures work with NPCs and custom characters. Finally a shot of Tali in her colossus as I am working on all of her non default armors.

Hey everyone, some more progress with
perma-texture modding. For those of you who want texture mods for ME1,
that goal is becoming ever closer. Here's our first texture extraction
from ME1:

Now that we know how they're stored, the next step is to reverse engineer the replacements.

Texmod will soon become a thing of the past for Mass Effect.

Have you tried it with darker skin tones ?

Yeah the darker skin tones work pretty good and all have the same level of detail, though I'm still dissapointed in when trying to create a black character they just don't quite look right.  It would be great if we could get the skin tone of Jacob then I'd be psyched, but i'm notsure if it's doable without ruinning the other tones.  I'll play with it and see what I can come up with.

Asking here since I don't have ME3 and can't post in this thread. Do I understand correctly :

- there's a high-res textures development for ME3 that rewrites textures much more efficiently than TexMod does, though it's still being debugged

- it can now be potentially used for ME2 and ME1, albeit there might be a a problem with ME2 DLC textures

- the guys running this HR textures replacer assemble a selection of textures and put these in their tool so you don't have to hunt them down among various projects and websites. Presumably what I use for ME2 (Jean-Luc Fortier's textures) and ME1 (CDAMJC's textures) will be part of a possible future high-res texture replacer for ME1 and ME2, since AFAICT they're the standards.

- I can follow the ME2 progress being made in the thread in the quote box, and the ME1 progress will likely be discussed there since CDAMJC is interested in this project due to Texmod being not-too-good with ME1.

That correct ?

Ta.
